Low 90s fastball, clocked at up to 93 mph (Prep Baseball Report)
3/4 arm slot thrower
Curve w/ some horizontal movement
Changeup
Good control

"Matthew Millett is a 2024 RHP/1B/OF with a 6-2 190 lb. frame from Grand Prairie, TX who attends Lake Ridge. Large frame with good length and excellent physical projection. Ran a 6.69 second 60-yard, athletic two-way prospect. Primary right-handed pitcher, power arm projection with easy gas right now, high three-quarters slot and works downhill with plane, gets a ton of swing-and-miss with the fastball in the zone while carrying it in the upper-80s, peaking at 90, holds velocity well and went to a pair of secondaries. Short, slurvy breaking ball with some horizontal bite to it, projectable spin and can land it, also turned over fading changeup with real depth. Also plays first base, athletic and methodical at the position, fluid through his actions and arm strength plays well. Right-handed hitter, slightly open start and moves in on time, slightly longer stroke but has good bat speed and gets on time, works to both gaps well with some future power projection. Good student. Verbal commitment to Texas. Named to 2022 High School All State Top Prospect List."

"4/03/22
I was excited to get my first in person viewing of Millett, and came away impressed with the Univ. of Texas commit. He has a good present build but plenty of projection left. His FB was 88-90 during the start and held that velo through the outing. When he went to the armside he showed the ability to sink it. He also threw a curveball and change up. The breaker was the better of the two pitches. Came out of the same tunnel as his FB and was able to command it well. Millett will be a fun one to follow the next couple years."

While NIL has somewhat limited the issue, baseball recruiting is hard. You can literally sign the best players at all positions and end up with no signees after the MLB draft.

More on incoming OF Casey Cummings

JC Transfer
from Chabot JC in California
San Ramon Valley HS
OF
0.387 batting avg :):):)
0.560 on base % :):):):):)
17 homeruns :):):)
24 stolen bases :):):):):)

Wears cool sunglasses.

Cummings was selected first-team all-state after a sensational 2023 season for the Gladiators. The 6-foot center fielder was tied for third in the state in home runs (17) and led Chabot in batting average (.387), stolen bases (24), slugging percentage (.820) and on-base percentage (.560).

Conference MVP. About as good an outfielder as you'll find in the JUCO ranks. "He gives the Longhorns an immediate impact bat in the lineup as well as a speedy, versatile defender in the outfield - which will come in handy to cover ground in Disch-Falk Field."

Rodriguez is upping his recruiting game. Real nice addition to the team. Welcome aboard Casey!

About the Stanford game(s):

"Cummings described Monday's game as “the best game I’ve seen in person. It was a very unfortunate way to see them end their season.”

He also noticed the difference in level of play.

“They’re definitely a lot bigger. It will be my job to get in the weight room,” Cummings said. “The level of play that they’re at is something I’ve been striving to get to.”

Seth Werchan
Transfer from Penn
Raised in Austin
OF
Werchan_Brown_MN.jpg

0.250 batting avg
4 homeruns
9 out of 10 on stolen base attempts

His batting numbers are rather pedestrian, and he's coming from the Ivies. But he's real fast and can steal bases and cover ground in the OF.

He's a walk-on, so no portion of a scholarship was used for him. I see him as mostly a pinch-runner, and a guy to spell some OFs in midweek games. He's also a good bunter. I think he's a role player for us, and there will be roles to play.

Seth Werchan - Baseball - University of Pennsylvania Athletics

Minchey

Hits the portal...

This sucks.

Well, good luck to him wherever he lands. The arm is there. He's a very interesting case--a homeschooled kid who plays big-time major college baseball.

I think Werchan can be a real role player for our team next year. He'll be a go-to guy for pinch running, and can pinch hit whenever we need a good bunt laid down in the late innings. He may get some infield hits off of bunts too. While his bat doesn't appear to be what we normally like to see in an OF, there are valuable contributions he can make to this team. He's a walk-on. Bleeds Burnt Orange.

He may do what Kennedy has done with lots of infield hits off bunts. Dude has some WHEELS...!!!

I don't want to throw a wet blanket on this exciting news of this pick-up, but we're probably still looking for another portal OF.

OF Projections:

Casey Cummings...........starter
Max Belyeu...................starter
Some portal transfer, or incoming Freshman......starter
Seth Werchan...............plays mid-week games, spelling any of the 3 OF starters/pinch bunts/pinch runs/significant role player who doesn't just ride the pine

******* David Thomas..........starts in OF if we can't get a third good batter at OF from the portal or an incoming Freshman doesn't pan out--we have others that could play 1B (incoming Freshman, Powell, Galvan if he's not the starting C)

The batting lineup doesn't look bad at all for next year.

We'll need some good starting pitchers.

More good relievers never hurts, ever.

I don't get losing Minchey--maybe he's pissed that he didn't make the travel roster to Stanford. Maybe Minch really wants to be a starter and Pierce told him he's a reliever. Who knows? He's a good young talent, and it appeared Pierce and Woody were developing him, and giving him a decent number of innings for a true Freshman.

The Horn reporting this morning that Mitchell Daly has entered the portal. Looking for a conference where it's easier to get a hit?
I understand. Flores or J. DuPlantier (or a newcomer) would likely overtake him next year. His bat was rather cold this year, but he's made some really good plays that helped us get to where we are. And he would blast the occasional homer. Good luck to him.

Yet his OPS was higher than Flores and DuPlantier.

I’m betting we get some portal guys.

Former Baylor RHP Will Rigney commits to Texas

Will need the SmartNews app to read it all
4.18 ERA...........Ok
1.79 WHIP.........
42 Strikeouts.....Good--1.31 Strikeouts per Inning
19 Walks...........a bit too many for 32.1 innings
32.1 Innings......coming back from injuries?

Had to come back from injury. Has some really good "stuff", including a plus slider.

With Burke leaving, 2 starters probably leaving, and injuries in our bullpen, our pitching staff needs shoring up. By the numbers, this guy looks competent enough, but that 1.79 WHIP doesn't look good. He's putting a lot of men on base. The injury bug has bitten him before, and he's had to recover and come back... However, under Woody's tutelage, he should step it up and be a productive member of our team. Plus, our catchers can frame pitches like Hollywood directors, so that may help a little bit with the WHIP. :)

Could end up anywhere from a middle reliever to a mid-week, Sunday (or even Saturday) starter? We need some good starting pitchers now...

If he stays healthy, he'll probably be a big contributor to our pitching staff.

It’s going to be a very tough year for Pierce next year. ALL the offense and pitching that was left over from the previous record year from 2022 will now be gone and no one is ready beside Thomas to replace them.

My expected losses are: (*I have no inside info just my feeling)

Kennedy
Campbell
P. Brown
Powell
Tanner Carlson
Daly (already in the portal)
Morehouse
Gordon
T. Witt
LBJ
Stehle

Replacements:

Cummings - could be considered a replacement offensively for one of our losses

Werchan - don’t consider him a replacement for any of our outfielders (offensively)

Rigney- pitcher - injury prone, high strike out to inning ratio but can’t stay healthy. High risk reward.

I saw an article saying Texas is going to be even better next year. I don’t know what they are smoking cause there is a lot of productivity to replace even if a couple of those guys return. We have almost zero pitching and I doubt we have 2+ incoming freshmen who will be able to pitch on the same level as Gordon and LBJ.

not knocking Werchan but Pierce is going to have to work the portal hard if he wants to compete next year on any level.

Yeah, we're just a week out from the end of the season. We've already lost one to the portal and gained one in that week. Way too early to even venture a guess what this team will look like eight months from now.

Cool, some of us like discussing Longhorn baseball year round. As info comes in, it changes the discussion, not trying to be a smart *** but that’s kind of how forums work for topics folks are interested in.

Some of those listed are out of eligibility (Kennedy, Gordon), several are on the list because they are ready for the next level (Campbell, Powell) and some because, well, they may decide they’ve had enough of longhorn baseball or college baseball and want to move on (like Daly, Minchey).
