HAMILTON

(Ok, the Disch staff needs to blast some crazy 1980s hair metal band music when he takes the mound and warms up)

My amateur takes:

Morris -- Fastball sits in the low-90s and tops off up to the mid-90s--looks even faster due to his height, delivery, and long arm length; 6'8" 260 lbs; may increase his velocity even more with coaching; good control; relentlessly pounds the strike zone; especially loves to come after batters and work the inside of the zone; solid curveball and changeup; a very large (but not fat) man; intimidating presence on the mound; a mean pitcher. But good control for this style of pitcher. Starter.

Selvig -- fastball up to the mid-90s; very good control over a nasty slider; very good control over all his pitches; a Rembrandt; really likes working the inside of the zone; a smart pitcher. And some scouts note that he's very "coachable." (I think that means he's not an egomaniac and will listen to his coaches and try to implement what they say...) He's a Wisconsin guy. Eventual starter. May even start this year. Should see a fair amount of innings this upcoming season.

On edit—Selvig threw 2 no hitters this season—one in the Regional Championship game. And he just made the American Legion all-tournament team after throwing very well this Summer.

Tumis -- low 90s fastball with a very good slider; crafty pitcher with good control and pitching smarts beyond his years; tall, lean pitcher; a lot like Shaw. May be used a lot like Shaw. A go-to reliever/stopper when we're in a bind and have to get out of an inning. Could later challenge for a starting position--we'll see. Probably a reliever next year.

Hudson Hamilton -- fan favorite from day 1 on campus. Looks like he could be onstage playing for RATT, Bon Jovi, Dokken, or Whitesnake. Like Zaharias (below), Hudson Hamilton is a strikeout wizard. Fastball in the low-to-mid 90s with very good movement. Super plus slider with a "hellacious bite" and a spin rate higher than the average MLB slider spin rate. Probably a closer or stopper/reliever in tight situations. Should be some sort of reliever next year (closer, stopper, set-up man, middle relief,...). High intensity, high energy pitcher. Will come out of the bullpen and get strikeouts.

Zaharias -- most underrated player in the class; low 90s fastball that has very good movement; absolute killer curveball/crazy good curveball--you just don't see a curveball this good from HS pitchers; averages over 2 strikeouts per inning against high level California competition; has only played organized baseball for 2 full seasons. Comes from an athletic family. Silicon Valley guy from a rather posh neighborhood. Has the stamina to start; very athletic (runs sets of 10 one-hundred yard sprints in his free time) and he started in HS. But next year he may be used as a reliever/closer/stopper in the same way Hudson Hamilton (above) will likely be used. When Zaharias takes the mound, strikeouts will soon follow.

Zatopek -- I don't know much about this more recent recruit. Fastball in the low 90s. I think the slider is his plus pitch--he throws it with a spin rate equal to the average MLB pitcher's slider. A little bit similar to Tumis, or even Hamilton (above). Private school guy from Houston. Wasn't rated that highly by the ranking folks, but I bet Pierce saw the raw stuff in this player (especially that slider with the MLB spin rate) and figured he could work with it. Seemed to enter the recruiting picture during his Senior year--a late bloomer. High leg kick and good mechanics.

Bertsch -- I really don't know much about this left handed pitcher who showed up to classes at UT in August. Dallas Catholic school guy. His film shows a pretty good breaking ball, and he's not afraid to challenge hitters with his fastball high in the zone. May need to improve his fastball velocity some more. Simple delivery with a slightly odd looking leg kick. His mechanics might look a bit different by Spring. Lean, lightweight guy (160 lbs) who will benefit from our strength training program (and good athletic dining room food). Probably will redshirt, but you just never know.

Even without Sykora, whom nobody should have expected to go to college, this is an outstanding incoming class of pitchers!!!

SELVIG
Threw a no hitter on May 31, 2023 in the Regional Championship playoff game. It wasn’t a perfect game—he walked two batters over the course of the entire game. It’s his 2nd no hitter this season.

:fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire:

He’s probably the most ready-to-go from day one of any of the Freshmen. Has superior command/control. He’ll challenge guys like Whitehead, Hurley, Santos, and Morris for the Sunday and Mid-week starter spots.

7-0
0.22 ERA
Averaged over 2 strikeouts per inning

Sure, it’s Wisconsin, but that is utter and complete domination.

Grubbs continues his development on the mound out on the West Coast. He seems to be getting a bit better with his control. Most of the walks he's given up were in his first game. There's going to be a lot of competition on the Longhorn mound this year, but Grubbs is one that I hope the Coaches keep bringing along and developing. Get him plenty of innings early in the year and in mid-week games.

He may be a guy who pitches a couple of innings at a time here and there next year, like Lummus last year. Although, this year, Grubbs may work up into a guy like Ace Whitehead was for us last year--someone who gets more and more innings as the season progresses. You know, someone whose numbers don't "wow" anyone, but a steady and reliable pitcher that doesn't elicit groans from the fans when he enters the game. That's what I'm hoping for Grubbs next year. Long term, as a guy who gets a lot of outs on ground balls, he could be a starter. Pierce, and Lucas Gordon, have both expressed very high opinions of this young pitcher.

4.82 ERA
1.50 WHIP
10 Strikeouts
5 Walks
(3 of them in his first game)
in 9.1 innings pitched

Cole Selvig

7/26/2023, Selvig just threw 5 innings in a 2-1 win over Manitowoc in the Wisconsin AAA American Legion state tournament. No hits, no runs, 9 strikeouts for Selvig in 5 innings. The coach said Selvig "has been nails all year."

Selvig made the All-Tournament team.

Ace has been getting it done up in Alaska this Summer. Bravo!
Ace is already one of our most reliable pitchers. It's good to see his numbers this good.

(no, this guy is not actually Ace Whitehead, just some dude in Alaska in a field with a wild bear...)

I wonder if he could pitch a strike by hitting the bear.
If it's a Baylor Bear - he'd knock it over

If it's a Berkeley Bear - he'd make it cry

If it's a UCLA Bruin - he'd piss it off, and it would beat us in a comeback victory

If it's a Brown Bear - he'd hit their female Bear player with a screwball

If it's a Mercer Bear - he'd get pulled by Pierce so some "project" pitcher could throw at it

Fortunately, the video cuts off before the man and the bear go all College Station on each other...

Don't know how I missed this one, but I did..........

Matt Zatopek
RHP

Houston Christian High School

upload_2023-8-14_16-20-39.jpeg

Fastball in the low 90s, up to 92mph
Slider in the low 80s,--slider spin rate 2470 rpm (avg MLB slider spin rate 2430-2530 rpm)
Change-up in the mid 80s

Sets them up with his fastball, and gets the Ks with his slider

"On the mound the quick compact mechanics get on top of the ball working down hill from a high three-quarters arm slot with the fastball... The slot drops occasionally on the slider with consistent hand speed allowing for sharper break ... with a feel for the command making it a viable out pitch especially when the fastball is getting to both halves."

"Uptempo delivery with a quick arm. Showed feel for the SL as well."

Apparently was throwing fastballs in the 80s until this past year or so when he came on strong and bumped his velocity up to the low 90s, and slider spin rate up to MLB levels.

Pierce can really find these pitchers and pick them.

Any relation to Mike Zatopek? He was our starting CF in 80, 81. Never drafted never signed and I was shocked no one picked him

DuP report?
He's back and good for a decent inning or two in relief whenever needed. I think his starter boat has sailed off a while back. We'll need lots of decent relievers--a whole pen full of 'em. That's what we haven't had for several years now.

I dunno, but here's a cool sports page picture (it must be legendary track star Emil Zatopek, followed by a pursuer, and then his accountant running behind in 3rd counting the steps):

I guess we need to wait until Fall ball for a full report.

Here's an off-the-radar LHP that showed up to classes:
BRANDON BERTSCH
LHP
6'0"
160 lbs

Dallas - Bishop Lynch HS
11 wins as a Senior
All-State pitcher

Gets a lot of strikeouts. A strikeout pitcher. The limited film available shows he's not afraid to go up high to get the strikeouts. Could be developed as a stopper or a closer.

Had some pretty weak fastball velocity until last year or so. A late bloomer. Look for more fastball velocity with coaching, and as he hits the weights and the athletic dining table. Might redshirt or see limited action as a true Freshman.

Keep an eye on this one. He talks big. I think he may just have the stuff to back it up!!!

:ut::ut::ut:

We've got a couple of really big guy, really strong pitchers coming in with Hayden Morris and Gage Boehm. Sometimes it's not bad when this sort of pitcher has a little bit of wildness to his pitching. Coach them to work the inside of the plate. There's an intimidation factor there. It puts some fear and uneasiness in the back of the batters' minds and keeps them off balance.

Y'all are going to really like TUMIS.

IMHO, he showed the best of the Freshmen pitchers.

Other than LBJ, Tumis may have the nastiest stuff in our pitching staff.

I think Tumis may be the pick of the litter of our Freshman pitchers. (and there's more than a couple of really good ones)

He's definitely an ectomorph, so his pals ought to be taking him to some of the great Austin area BBQs, the all-you-can-eat pizza buffets, etc.

Surely, the MLB scouts looked at Tumis a lot. Their thinking may have been: 'Let's see if he puts on some muscle weight and gets his fastball up to 95 mph +.'

His breaking ball pitches are works of art. This dude is REALLY good.

Zatopek got drilled in Fall Ball. That's actually what you should expect for true Freshmen pitchers. There's a learning curve. The raw talent is there. He'll develop into a good one.

I want to see Gage Boehm throwing his 98 mph fastballs to Gasparino, Powell, Cummings, Thomas, and Porter Brown!
