Penders or Barnes

Who is/was the better game day coach? I think we can all agree that Barnes laps Penders two or three times when it comes to crecruiting.

I never really got the impression that Penders was doing a whole lot of diagramming, but I don't get that feeling with Barnes either.

Barnes.

Barnes by a mile. Penders may have been decent once -- maybe. Jamie Ciampaglio was responsible for Penders' success in the early years and the other assistants later. Penders had lots of bluster, but not much else. IMHO.

Is this really a serious question? I would put it right up there with "Yeah, sure Mack Brown is a better recruiter but is he really a better football coach than John Mackovic??"

In the 8 years since he left UT, Penders has been to the NCAA tournament 1 time. He couldn't carry Barnes' jock.

I'm not saying I would choose Penders as a gameday coach over Barnes, but let's not pretend like Barnes' gameday coaching is beyond reproach either.

I'm with Bonafide. Barnes's game day coaching is mediocre but TP's was non-existent. Reminded me of the Guy Lewis days at Houston when his attitude was to give the 5 guys a ball and tell 'em to put it in the hole.

Don't discount the weave play where we handed off around the perimeter 8 times before jacking up a heavily guarded 22 footer.

Penders is actually a better coach than people give him credit for. His recruiting is terrible which makes him look worse than he is.

Barnes is a better coach than people give him credit for also, but for the opposite reason. He is a hell of a recruiter so we feel like he should do more. But, not many teams have accomplished what UT has in the last 10 years.

With that said, it's Barnes and it's not even close.

Why is this even debatable? Barnes by a mile. This program has elevated to an elite level in college basketball. Look at how many guys have moved on to the NBA under Barnes. We are a National Championship away from being a legit powerhouse and I never thought I'd see that at Texas much less under Penders for that matter.

Penders had his strengths - like an uncanny ability to get his offensive weapons to go nuts during any particular game - but in game coaching wasn't one of them.

Just as HudsonHorn said. His offensive philosophy was throw anything up there as quickly as you can.

Penders' practices used to consist of rolling out the balls like a PE coach would do with a 3rd period PE clas.

This post has got to be a joke and I am kinda embarrassed that I bit....

Just because you hate Penders doesn't mean he wasn't a good coach. If anything, there should be more hate on this board for Bob Weltlich, who was by far and away the worst coach in Texas Basketball history.

Penders made it to an elite 8 and a couple of sweet sixteens. Barnes has had even more success, in part because of better players.

As for coaching abilities, I'll take Barnes over Penders.

Penders has said he never would have convinced Clack and Chico Vazquez to stay home if Texas hadn't been going into the B12. Not saying anything about his recruiting, just what it took in that case.

There was a really good article that I read on BC a couple weeks back from a former player under Penders. Basically said that the wide open offense allowed them to compete, but there was absolutely no coaching and no playbook. The players were good athletes, but were undisciplined and selfish on the court, and they never developed their skills. This ultimately prevented the team from being able to raise their game to the next level.

It's pretty tough to separate coaching and recruiting. Would Barnes be as successful at recruiting if his results weren't so good? Could Penders not recruit because his "coaching" was glorified street ball?

The comparison of Barnes and Penders is not even worth having and I can't believe I'm responding. . Does Barnes have some coaching deficiencies? Sure- all coaches do. How many coaches out there are better than him? I would say not that many. Barnes has gone head to head with the best coaches in the game and has won a fair amount of the time -- even without a talent advantage.
The talent we have coming in is insane. However, I think the fans have overestimated the talent we have had over the past few years. We've had some great players -- but each of the teams has had a glaring deficiency. We made it to the Elite 8 with 2 sub 6 foot starting guards, and folks seem to think we underachieved.

Anyway, I'm rambling. I take Barnes every time.

no it is really more like,

"Would you rather sleep with Kathy Bates or Rosanne Barr."

Barnes would not make a top ten of current game day coaches and Penders would not make a top fifty. Barnes is the best recruiter out there though.

I think it's a fairly moot question. I think in the college game today talent overcomes coaching to a large degree. Bob Knight was still considered one of, if not THE, best tacticians in college basketball history. But, his later teams and IU and then at Tech were only mediocre because he couldn't get the talent he needed. On the other hand, I don't think Calipari is a very good coach -- but look at his success.
