Patterson or Kwiatkowski?

The national talking heads all seem to be attributing the apparent improvement on defense to special assistant Gary Patterson. I have yet to hear anybody mention defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.

Anybody with any insight? I don't know what the relationship between Patterson and Kwiatkowski is.

I do remember that Kwiatkowski's first year at Washington, the opponents regularly scored a lot of points. By his second season, and for years after that second season, opponents struggled to score.

In the end, as long as there's improvement, I don't care. I just want to see opponents struggling to move the ball and see the defense flying around and making plays.

It’s an excellent question. We were wondering the same thing today.

I don’t expect anyone knows but let’s keep it going!

Did Sark even mention K’s name in the postgame presser? I heard something about the value of Patterson and his input. I only listened for a short period of time, so maybe he did.

Definitely Patterson. They showed him on the sideline wiping his head with his towel and pulling his pants up. Our defense looked like TCU’s defense under Patterson. Hard nosed, limiting offense points. No PK defense epiphany today or ever.

I would be interested in any insight here as well.
At Sark's PC on Thursday, he was asked about Patterson's contributions. Sark danced a bit by simply saying GP was a good advisor and he was glad to have him (something like that); then he went on to "praise" Coach K.

But, as Ivan said above about TV showing him on the sideline today, I also noticed he had a pen in his hand. That made me think he may have been "advising" PK on the fly with diagrams.

I don't recall.
Did you even watch a game last year?
He was given grief by plenty whether I was one of them or not.
Not sure what difference that makes.
Lol whatever. Please keep pretending to be the one who decides if other posters are good fans or not.

Face it, Patterson comes in and there is a huge turnaround so far. You will pound your fist that is Coach K. How about both?

Do we really know?

Suspect Sark lite a serious FIRE under K's *** after 2021 debacles and late meltdowns.

K got second year benefit to better know his players, make corrections, improve techniques & make adjustments.

Patterson is the hugely credible D Whisperer to K and Sark, that helped take the D effort to a zenith today IMO!

Yeah, maybe having Patterson there motivated K to change a bunch of things. Maybe moondog is right. Like you said, who knows?

I was pounding my fist?
Interesting.
PK is the DC.
He is getting paid a DC salary.
If he was humble enough and open minded enough to accept advice from an analyst and put it to good use then I applaud him.
When GP is named DC I will applaud him.
In fact, I will applaud him for coming to UT as an analyst an offering his expert advice.
When he is named DC I will applaud him or give him grief for his game planning and play calling.

@SabreHorn was at the game. He will come up for air soon....

Look forward to his comments about the day, our crowd, Bama fans, Satan, female cheerleaders, Chaps gurls, Bevo, game details, etc. :headbang:

Don't know the answer to this, but I also think it's fair to say that PK learned a lot about what guys could and could not do, and how they fit his system. And having an infusion of new blood plus seeing some guys elevate their play along the d-line probably helped him.

Ultimately, if it works and the defense keeps playing like this, pay 'em both!

Have a great night.

Gary Patterson is a better assistant to the regional manager than Dwight Schrute. Seeing him walk around wiping his forehead and pulling out the pencil and paper was fun to watch. Having the safeties playing more aggressive at the LOS is certainly a GP thing. Loved how well Thompson played. It seems to me he is doing a lot of self scouting and in game adjustments but also heard he’s been game planning with PK for months. I’m sure he’ll be the DC at some point but also happy for PK.

I’ll be interested to hear the relationship of how Patterson interacts. But that was the best defense I have seen in 10 years.

One game obviously does not give enough data points, but the improvement of our D was great to see. Let’s hope it is the new norm, not an aberration.

And if it is Patterson’s doing, let’s also hope Kwaitkowski absorbs a fair amount of it because I don’t see Patterson settling for an “advisor” or even a DC position for long.

On the other hand, maybe Patterson is looking to retire and being an Advisor allows him to stay involved but without the stress or grind of being a HC or DC.

I think/hope Patterson is enjoying his role and relationship with Sark and Pk.
Your point about not having the grind is good.
I don't think he needs the money but if he does we can find it.
A thought , if defense is your passion what could be better than being able to ply your craft at Texas where you have talent facilities and respect?
Will he get to the point he misses being a head coach? Who knows Mack did

This is more about a team getting a great DC at the worst time in the history of football. Somewhat late, with COVID restrictions… this is about a full year of this man being able to work.

My laugh was related to your first line. Classic.

Frankly, why cant it be both. They both have a resume and my God that team has a new attitude and were completely transformed. Why cant we give Del Conte and Sark and the rest of the staff for created a culture that led to a complete transformation of a long suffering program. Why cant we just admit this staff took their lumps last year an ran off the rot that had infected this team? This coaching staff manned up and made it happen on National TV.
