These were selections by individual polls as shown at the site below. It is interesting because we could claim some more like USC but that would be pointless and informed fans would not pay attention. If we did besides counting 1963, 1969, 1970 & 2005 we could also claim 1914, 1941,1968, 1977. and 1981.
Man if we claimed 1968 we would have 3 straight national championship years. I think we had the best team in the Country at the end of 1968 but we couldn't play a top two team because of bowl tie ups so we will never really know how great that team was.
Ironically we didn't get any votes for out 1961 team but I think that was the best team in the country that year and it is too bad we couldn't have played Alabama in a bowl game to prove it. I think next to 1969 that that was Coach Royal's best team.

In spite of two ties USC claims the 1939 titile with winning one poll that went out of business after 1940. In fact two polls voted Cornell as MNC rather than USC but the Aggies had the most and the main poll back then (AP). The Aggies could claim 1919 as they had one poll that voted them MNC.

We beat SMU in 1981 but one poll has them as their MNC too.

Interesting web site.

I totally agree about the 61 team! If not for the cheap shot James' head, we would have been NCs!

does somebody want to explain how in the hell SC is listed as the national champion in one of the polls for 2005?

Another interesting note is that we weren't chosen by one poll in 1963 although it isn't listed in the link. In 1963 the Washington D.C. Touchdown club awarded it's MNC based on the season and they voted Navy as its' National Champion and Navy Coach Wayne Hardin as its Coach of the year. And this was dispite the fact that we had a perfect 10 - 0 record and Navy had a 9 -1 record losing to SMU, a team that Texas had beaten.
I couldn't find a link on its' past national champions so maybe someone can help. I used to know one but alas I have forgoten it or I would post it here.
Needless to say after the Cotton Bowl game when we whipped Navy the Washington Touchdown Club had to endure all sorts of ridicule and after the game while photographers were photographing Coach Royal he was quoted as saying "If you catch me smiling send a copy to the Washington Touchdown Club."

Here is another link that shows some selections for past MNCs. The Washington Touchdown Club which chose one from 1955 to 1994 is included. Just click on the interested year. Note a Jim Koger poll in 1963 chose Alabama as their NC even though they had 2 losses. But our 1961 team was voted NC by Loren Maxwell who probably was much more accurate that year than Koger 2 years later.

Prior to the BCS NCAA Div. I college football had NO official national Championship. The polls were one way of rating teams and power systems like Dickenson and Dunkel were another. As a result, four different Universities claim the 1964 national title (Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama and Arkansas).

According to NCAA records, Texas was ranked the #1 team at the close of the 1941 season by the Williamson System. I say claim it.

Hey All I wouldn't be surprised if down the road USC claims that 05 NC just to pad their records like they did for the 1939 year even though they had two ties that year.
