Parking Tailgate

I've just ordered my tickets too and am VERY curious what the parking and tailgating situation is at RP... I'd really like to be able to bring my reciever pit... How early would one need to arrive and what's the likelihood of being able to park close to HF?

2pm isn't too early to pop some suds. i'll bring some dos equis. let me know where to meet. i'll be leaving dallas at 8am, be at the reck at noon.

See y'all there! Can't wait for another crazy H-town Longhorns weekend.

Recent tailgates at RP have been decently close, but have been on parking lot surface (ie no reasonably close grass available). I'm working on it, but if someone else finds a good area let me know.

Orangeblood-

I would suggest next to the football stadium on the Reckling park side. Grass, Trees, and shade and the Rice cops will not scream at you for taking parking spaces with tents and people. This is on the University BLVD side of campus.

West lot 4 is for cars during baseball. The soace I'd suggest is next to 19 right next to the football stadium. That is grass and trees.

I have someone checking on the "half-moon" shaped lot (#33?) on the south side of the football stadium, but that is designated a faculty lot. I was hoping that with school out that might work. Maybe we can use it Sat and Sun.

Also looking at the lot that is just NE of the half moon lot (no number) that is on the SE corner of the football stadium.

Is there a link to a campus map? For some reason, my computer does not want to give me one.

Darn State Legislature because of them I have another week to teach and can't get to Houston for Friday's game. I also have a district sponsored event Saturday afternoon that is usually not on regional Saturday. I could come in for the Sunday games but if we had to play on Monday I'm screwed again. Now if we make a Super Regional that's another story.

Am I just lazy or does the "half moon" lot look a little far from Reckling? Obviously, we are spoiled with the parking/tailgate areas right next to the Disch. I'm just thinking about easy in & out access during non-UT games for those of us that would like to grab a cold beverage. How about the patch of trees along Stockton Drive? Not sure how wide the tree lined area is. That looks like the closest we could get.

OB, I assume you are coming in Thursday night? We could do some recon.

The tree lined areas along Stockton are not near big enough for the tailgate.

Also, you need to consider the "further out of the stream of traffic" factor that helps keep officials from screwing with you.

The tree-lined area along University Boulevard, starting behind the police station, is wide open and perfectly pleasant for tailgating. The trees are mature there, and you can back up your vehicle to where your tailgate is facing University Boulevard; you should get plenty of shade that way. (As a bonus, you can watch the chickees jog by on the university jogging trail, right outside the hedges.) Or you can park in the open in that public lot behind the police station, it's open for tailgating. A third option, though a bit of a hike, is the do the same thing on the Rice Boulevard side; i.e. back up to the trees and set up. Nobody will bother you there, either.

I've never been to Reckling before. Do the stands (specifically Section KK) get any shade at any time? I can survive the heat and humidity, but would love not to be directly in the sunshine the entire day.

There's a large canopy that extends over the top two-thirds of sections CC to KK. In KK the sun will be setting over your right shoulder. If your seats are above, say, the bottom ten rows of KK, you should be in the shade; for sure, after about 3 pm. The lower down you are, the more sun you'll get -- but pretty much the whole section should shade over by 4 pm. For the late game, you'll be in the shade throughout section KK.

And if the sun is bothersome early, you can always go down and watch the game from the beer garden down the left field line. (Although I don't think NCAA allows beer to be served during playoff games...)

Well, after discussing the tailgating issue with Rice officials, we have no set plan yet. They have told us that anyone set up on the grass with tents and a tailgate would be determined to be hosting an event that they will come by and demand payment for the space. Get this, $1000 for the weekend. The gentleman doing all of my work politely declined.

Personally, I find it extremely hard to believe that they're going to be doing this, but we're working on an alternative for ourselves. I should have more info tomorrow morning.

However, for those of you planning to show up early Friday morning and set up, I'm not quite sure what to tell you other than good luck and I honestly think that they were blowing smoke.

According to the Rice website:

Rice Stadium Parking Lots
Want to bring your own food and tailgate in the parking lot? Parking at Rice Stadium is free in the surrounding lots (some areas are reserved for donors). The parking lots open four hours prior to kickoff . You can tailgate by your vehicle, but you can not set-up in adjoining parking spaces or in fire lanes.

Perhaps the "Rice Official" was referring to the "Tailgate Owley" where they supply the tents and such...

That's crazy if true though...

Surprise, surprise, the story has now changed.

We're working on getting a reserved spot for us to tailgate in and if that happens this afternoon, I'll post the location and pin it to the top of the board.

Looks like the event head is meeting us early tomorrow morning to let us choose our site.

Look for us SE of the football stadium and west along University of Reckling. Later in the day we'll have brisket, sausage and other food and plenty of libations for all ages.

Hook 'em!!!!!!

thanks for all the hard work on this. doesn't look like i'll be leaving dallas till after 9am, so i'll find you guys/gals after the game.
