OK. Syracuse played a great game. They shot lights out from 3 when it counted and I wish we could see guard play from Texas like that, but I am STILL tearing my hair out in clumps.
When will Karen Aston EVER be able to teach offense against a good zone? I haven't watched Syracuse enough to know if they always play zone, but 12 months ago UCLA showed that Aston's offense against a good zone will not work, and still we see the same lame -*** schemes of Cathy Marsden from the late 1990s, despite a year of repeated failures.
Overseasbbfan, help me here. I need to see how to spin this double-digit loss against an unranked team on a neutral court into a positive? 23 turnovers, at least half of them from the post, because there is no plausible pass, there is no movement. Repeatedly Syracuse would line up four players on the baseline. Why do I NEVER see that from Texas? I don't want to be accused of hidden intentions again. From what I see, Karen Aston (who to be fair is a very good rebound/intensity/ hustle kind of coach) is utterly BUSH LEAGUE when it comes to dealing with a half court offense against a zone.
This is 2013, to be elite, you need to be excellent on both sides of the floor. Aston coaches offense like she is Jody Conradt in in 1986, or Pat Summit with Candace Parker on the team. Not gonna happen, not matter how well she recruits. The philosophy on offense is outdated, bordering on laughable. Watch the interior passing on a Kim Mulkey team even in years when the talent is down and I am not a fan of that scarecrow in a push up bra, watch how OK moves the ball. I hated the histrionics of Skylar Diggins, but the spacing of any Muffett McGraw team is a thing of beauty. Geno might be an obnoxious yankee, but watching CT in the half court is thrilling to any fan of basketball.
I am glad that Aston is a good recruiter, but she could have Taurasi, Parker, Clarissa Davis, Catchings and Lisa Leslie on the floor and Griner coming off the bench and find a way not to make it beyond the sweet 16. TX has hired a dinosaur, a deep dud. Aston needs to go back to being an associate head coach in a major program or the head coach of UNT. What I have seen on offense in the last 12 months is enough to make angels weep.
The major talent of Chas Fussell is being ruined, Chas is as good a shooter as any of the wonderful Syracuse guards, why did she never have the opportunity of an uncontested 3? Imani is next. Under a good guard coach Henderson would be a star. If Nneka had the grades to go to Stanford, she would be as good as either Ogumwike sister. (That's a long recruiting story). Empress would be on the Wade list at Rutgers - where the coaching on offense is as incompetent, but at least the guards are set free. Ditto for UNC. Since Aston was responsible for the major bust of the 2005 number one recruiting class, I am also anxious about her assessment of talent.
I think Aston is a very good associate coach for post play and rebounding and defense. A 12 - 19 record suggests rather eloquently her talent on the other side of the ball. The Big 12 IS down this year, so I am hoping for a better record, but who knows. Plonsky made a nostalgic, good ole white gal hire who is proving to be utterly incompetent. I HATE HATE watching the Longhorns lose, but I am trying to talk myself into a win win position as fan. Every time they win ( which is not often) I am ecstatic, and when they lose, I am trying to see each loss as a step closer to the firing of the ineptitude in charge and that one day, TX might get a coach who knows how to coach in the current era. Aston might be that coach, but her learning curve is steep, and so far the FAILURE is EPIC. WORDS fail me for how BAD a coach Karen Aston is on offense, and even the most causal fan knows this. There were barely 2000 butts in seats for the Stanford game. I remember days when 10, 000 was average. The product on the floor is that bad. Who wants to watch 20 plus turnovers a game, and entirely stagnant offense and a BELOVED team losing because the head coach clearly has NO CLUE about how to play basketball in the Big 12?
