Bielema has his moments and this is working out for him this year. They play tough defense this year. However, The Big 10 is way down this year. And last year he got whupped by the Roadrunners at home.

I'm thinking Bielema would have little interest in the Nebraska, or even the Wisconsin job (if he were ever pursued). He's got it going at U of I, which has been a sleeping giant for a long, long time. Big population state. Good enough HS football (I think). Not far from Ohio to poach more blue chips. And they have an old storied history of skull-cracking linebackers.

Any of the following platforms could dominate the Big 10 West--with the right coach:

Illinois
Wisconsin
Iowa
Nebraska
Purdue

maybe even:
Minnesota
Northwestern

It's parity city up in the Big 10 West.

Denver rookie defensive back in his first start has been flagged for pass interference four times tonight, and the game isn't over yet. Tied in the fourth. . . .tied at the end of regulation. It didn't make a difference but Denver had to use its final timeout in regulation when the rookie lined up on the wrong side and left a receiver on the opposite side uncovered. . . . no first downs by either team in multiple possessions in overtime, but finally Denver muffed a punt, and the Chargers' kicker made his fourth FG of the night to win the game, despite such a bum kicking leg that he fell to the ground in pain after each kick.

Chop, nice post on IL... when I played ball 50+ years ago.... #50 / # 51 LB Dick Butkus was THE Gold Standard for a defensive football player on any level.

Incredible work ethic, football smart, 110% every play, intimidating, punishing tackler.

I remember our coaches frequently invoking his name during 2-a-days and practices.

For some reason I thought Butkus was #51. Maybe at da bears?

Agree - he was #51 for da Bearz.

On JV team I wore #51 because that was the jersey the coach gave me. Jr. year another lineman wanted #51 because he admired Butkus. I didn't care about jersey # much, so I swapped him for #52 and I wore that the rest of my HS daze...

Had to run 100 hundred stands/bleachers for missing the afternoon practice of two a days to go see Dick Butkus and Gayle Sayers play the Oilers in a preseason game. I think that was in 1967.
At least Coach gave us 2 salt tablets and a 6 ounce coke bottle of water about halfway through. I still don’t know what that green stuff at the bottom of the bottle was.
Evidently what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!

10/22

This looks like another good week with teams in the meat of their conference schedules.

#8 TCU vs #17 Kansas State — the other matchup of ranked teams in the Big 12. Max Duggan is a lot better than Adrian Martinez, but the Cats are a force to be reckoned with. Couple of good coaches in this game too.

#24 Miss St v #6 Alabama. The Pirate will try to air it out and light up the scoreboard. Bama will be pissed after their loss to little UT.

#9 UCLA vs #10 Oregon. The Bruins have put together a really good team—far better than their horrible (and mostly absent) fan base deserves. Oregon is the big test out in the far West.

#7 Old Miss vs LSU. Lane has the Rebels at what just might be their best since the Johnny Vaught and Mississippi Burning days. They’re really good. Lane does it with a sophisticated passing offense and adherence to a strict standard of ethics. The Rebs will take on the 2nd best college football program in Louisiana. Watch out though… Daniels is LSU’s QB and he’s been on fire lately. Add an extra generator to support that scoreboard, cuz it’s gonna light up today.

#14 Syracuse vs #5 Clemson. That’s not a misprint. The Orangmen are suddenly relevant again. We’re about to see just how good they are. Cuse likes to run the ball, and Clemson is tough up front. Could be an ugly grind it out game.

Iowa vs #2 Ohio State. Ohio State is a #2. Iowa has a good defense, but it will take more than that.

#21 Cincy at SMU. Could be interesting.

Memphis at #25 Tulane. The top college football program in Louisiana looks to keep up their winning streak.

Kansas at Baylor. A couple of dangerous future opponents. Let’s see what they’ve got.

WV at Tech. Tech with the W today.

And Baylor challenges Kansas for the stupidest helmet award. They have that cartoon bear head wearing a sailor’s hat.

WOAH!!!!!

Kansas takes football back to the 1910s. 4th down. The KU QB faked a shotgun play then pooch kicked it and it was downed inside the Baylor 1 yard line.
