OTHER GAMES

Good night what is it with FS1’s camera crew. Switched off them and the Oirate just because got tired of trying to see the players the camera was so far out of a normal tv view. Strange to me because normally I like to see more than just the ball carrier but jeez, they were so far out I couldn’t see the players.
There was a lightning threat in the area that caused FS1 to disable several of its cameras temporarily. It's gone now, so you can watch normally. Utah up 31-13.

OSU had 373 rushing yds against KSU. Now you can feel better about our run defense. Good grief that's a lot of rushing yds.

I was looking over the stats and saw that Sanders only had 150 passing yards and 2 picks. I wondered how they won by double digits until I saw that Hubbard had only 300 rushing yards by himself. Meanwhile KSU's leading rusher had 44 yards, their leading receiver 39 (on just 1 catch), and they only achieved 8 first downs all game.

Arizona just took the lead from UCLA (the third lead change in the second half) with about 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter. 20-17. EDIT--UCLA gets the ball back for a last chance drive with backup QB and three minutes left at UCLA's own nine yard line. Out to UCLA 40 with 1:49 left. Pass complete to Arizona 40 with 1:20 left. Down to the 25 with less than a minute left. 4th and 6 with 20 seconds left at the 21. 39 yard field goal try to tie the game. Defensive timeout to ice the kicker just before he goes ahead and kicks it, and it would have been good. After timeout, second kick--no good--wide right. 34 seconds to go. Arizona wins.

Just for future reference, ESPN+, Disney+, and a couple other channels will be an add on package on Hulu for $12.99 I believe.
May be just as well that the game was not viewable...that RB had close to 300 yards. Would be nice if we had one that could do that...

We haven't played KSU yet.....Chuba didn't have 300 vs us. Lets wait and see what kinda rushing yards we have vs KSU. Maybe KSU tried to take away QB and passing game since that is what worked vs us.

JK Dobbins looks like a beast. I forget if we had a serious whot at him in recruiting or not. He's from LaGrange and would sure look nice in our backfield!

<realize i have just teed it up for all the CS haters to dogpile>
He did not come here because he knew CS was toast as recounted in a recent interview.

He really does not care about who you are a fan of, but what do you do when the 3rd team Qb is on the field? Kansas did not quit, why should TCU?
I'm not sure how long you have been on here, but a lot of posters thought Patterson would be good at Texas. I never did because I don't think he would be a good fit. Not sure why you think you need to point out that Patterson would care if I'm a fan of him or not.

To answer your question, and I'm not sure why it needs answering, most coaches take the knee when up by that much late in the game, not continue to run plays.

There's something about guys like Patterson who do more with less that's admirable. During the tail end of the Mack years, I felt like we had the opposite--a coach who did less with more... You look over to Ft Worth and think 'Hmmmm, now there's a guy who gets a lot out of his talent.' Patterson's a pretty good Xs and Os coach, and an excellent HS talent identifier and player developer.

Running up the score once the outcome is obvious is a different story, and I don't encourage or approve of it.

I didn't think my comment during that game would illicit so many responses.

Don't get me wrong, he's a great coach. I just think he's odd, yells and loses his voice too easily, sweats profusely, and has a problem with properly fitting pants.
I wouldn't want to see him as the Texas coach.

But, he doesn't care what I think.

I'm not so sure Patterson, or Leach, could ever do well at UT. The best of the best programs--ND, Bama, UT, OU, USC, Mich, aOSU--have a history of chewing up and spitting out coaches who did very well at lesser schools. It takes something special to achieve and maintain the (often absurdly) high expectations of those fan bases, including ours.

While I'd like to see Leach move into a more prominent position, maybe it's best for guys like Leach and Patterson to remain the hero of programs used to mediocre or worse performance and not go for the limelight of the very top programs. They can be as eccentric as they like and will always have the red carpet rolled out for them by a fan base happy with a long run of 8-4 seasons and minor bowl wins. The occasional 10 win season will have the national media heaping praises on them for achieving such lofty heights at lowly TCU or WSU. Perhaps they're right where they belong. Think Bill Snyder at KSU.

I hope that if we get up on Kansas by 5 TDs and Casey Thompson or Roshon Johnson have a chance to make it 6 that we go for it.
(And then I would hope for Tom Herman to beep Les Miles’ nose at the 50 yd line for good measure)

I think it wasn't so much that Mack did less with more. Rather it was his failure to continue to evaluate and identify HS talent. Mack did less with less. Too many of the guys in Mack's later years never lived up to the recruiting hype, and I'd argue the guys Patterson identified had a higher ceiling than the more celebrated ones Mack offered.

It's a chicken/egg question, I suppose. Did poor coaching fail to develop the innate talent, or was the lesser innate talent misidentified?

I guess if a handoff really deep in the opponent's territory that possibly turns into a touchdown makes the difference on how prepared for the future the backups are, well....

TCU up 46-14 over Kansas and scores on the last play of the game. Doesn’t take a knee. Not a Patterson fan.

FWIW, he was running up the middle to run the clock out, until Kansas called two timeouts with around a minute to go, trying to get the ball back. If they don't call those timeouts, TCU doesn't score.

So what? Take the knee and call it a day. People can try to convince me otherwise, but I'm not going to change my mind on it. If Miles made dick moves, so what? So, they both made dick moves.

Some were saying it's the backups getting reps. Again, how is handing off up the middle going to make these guys game ready in big situations if called on?

On Saturday, 5 Oct, there is a game in which I have some personal interest. My alma mater, USAFA, goes to Annapolis to play USNA. Service Academy rivalries are always intense. Truthfully, the Navy folks consider Air Force as a johnny-come-lately; they view Army as their chief rival. But Air Force is playing decent football this year; they gave Boise State all they could handle before fading at the end in Boise. I'm not sure Air Force or Navy has much chance against Army this year - but I'd sure like to see a W over Navy this Saturday to get it started.

My neighbor went to USAFA and was on the team. I think he never got on the field though. My father in law is AF colonel. So go AF!

I think that is a conference courtesy. If you think about it, if you are able to win over a coach, why embarrass him by running up the score? It seems you want to keep him as coach there if you know you can beat him. Therefore, make him look as good as possible even though you own him.

10/5:

Iowa v. Michigan--A real test for both teams. We'll see whether Iowa is, or is not, for real and likely to challenge mighty Wisconsin in the West. With a win, Michigan is still relevant. With a loss, they're in middle-of-the-pack territory. I know Michigan fans. Harbaugh had better win this one, or start putting an armed guard outside his house. This is a pretty even matchup. Michigan in a tight game.

Michigan St v. An Ohio State University--A tough challenge for aOSU. Mich. St. almost always plays a tough, hard-hitting, caveman-like defense, but they'll have trouble putting many points on the board against aOSU. Could be a trap game (I hope), but I think aOSU is probably too good overall to drap this one. Mich St. is too one dimensional. Still, this could be a close game and a good watch, with an outside (but realistic) chance for an upset.

Auburn v. Florida--I regard Florida as overrated. We'll see. Auburn is a tough, fast, physical team that excels at playing defense, but lacks a good QB--a typical/classic SEC team. I'd take Auburn here.

Baylor v. KSU--I hate to see Baylor rise up again as a pretty-good to good team, but I think they're on the right trajectory. Two different styles at play here. This is a battle for relevance between two middle-of-the-pack Big 12 teams. I want KSU, but think Baylor will win it.

Navy v. Air Force--Air Force has been on the rise, while Navy has flattened out as a good, but not that good, team. Navy has too many horses for the AF today, and Navy's offense is still (mostly) a well-oiled machine.

Purdue v. Penn St.--The Boilermakers may give the boy rapers a real challenge today. Penn St out-talents Purdue by a mile, but watch out. This could be a trap game.

TCU v. Iowa St.--A very interesting one for me. Many (including me) have come to the realization that we may have overestimated ISU coming into the season. However, I think both of these teams are solid, tough, upper-middle of the conference type teams. Look for a hard fought classic gridiron struggle between two (mostly) fundamentally sound and well coached teams. (yeah, that's right--Patterson is a good coach) Flip a coin for the outcome.

SMU ("Dallas") v. Tulsa--Cue the music from the DALLA$ tv series. Dallas mops the floor with a hapless Tulsa team. Shane adds to his gaudy passing #s.

Va. Tech v. Miami--A matchup between two underachievers. I have no idea who to pick.

NW v. Nebraska--Once again, Nebraska leaves the field lamenting the day they left the Big-12. But they'll never admit it...

Oregon St. v. UCLA-- This game is where the sorry meets the lousy. The stink vs. the stank. The dogs vs. the canines. The bums vs. the vagrants. The chumps vs. the has-beens. A real battle for the cellar of the PAC 12. UCLA has shown flashes of the latent underutilized raw talent on their team, but they still stink and are a shell of their former glory. The Bruins have enough talent to overcome the Beavers. Look for an ugly Bruin victory.

Okla St. v. Texas Tech--Tech needs to minimize mistakes or this one could get ugly and then uglier.

Cal v. Oregon--As expected, Cal has fallen from its temporary lofty perch. Oregon is probably better, but Cal's pass rush could roast the Ducks. I have no idea who might win this game.

Washington v. Stanford--Washington is back in the driver's seat in the PAC 12, but they're not that much better than everyone else. Every game they play is a trap game.

...
Auburn v. Florida--I regard Florida as overrated. We'll see. Auburn is a tough, fast, physical team that excels at playing defense, but lacks a good QB--a typical/classic SEC team. I'd take Auburn here. ...

I took the under on this

Big Blue scores a TD! Charbonnet Runs it in from the 2 yard line. Michigan showed up ready to play.
