Other games / other teams

Yeah I'd pay some serious money to see Jones play alongside Johnson if they were both here. They'd be lighting it up. Purdue is the only "great" team they've played, but they took them to the woodshed.

It really does show that a change of scenery can affect people in positive ways. Shaka was never going to get the support in Austin that he can at a school that hasn't had a football team in 60 years.

Shaka wasn't great here. And I really don't understand why not.

Something really odd was going on and it affected his program/coaching.

I don't think it was odd, per se. Our bball culture is what it is. Shaka coached 6 NBA players at Texas, but literally none of them were guys who could take over a game, protect the ball, shoot well, or be any sort of on-court general to distribute to other guys. He inherited a "Barnes" team without having a "Barnes" ability to coach that up.

The moment we got Beard, he made an effort to get those types of guys instead and it made an immediate impact on team success. I think Shaka probably could have done better if he was encouraged to shed the dead weight, but it was the pre-NIL days and he didn't have that kind of tool.

Fair enough. That's as good an explanation as any I have heard.

It's not that simple Vol when there are money and donations involved.

Everything was cleared by the end of the season. He could have been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation and he would have come back the next year with everyone happy as a clam. Had a trial and conviction happened then he gets fired. I can promise a crappy program for years will cost us more in donations, attendance revenue, etc. than a couple months of upset donors.

The finicky part about donors is when we end up below .500 in conference play and missing the tourney this year they will yet again threaten to cancel donations if another change isn't made. I believe it was more pressure from administration than it was about donations.

Unfortunately the optics of the type of situation Beard was in don't go away easily. In relationship abuse, once someone accuses someone else, the idea that it happened tends to stick no matter the outcome. There are numerous cases where the person making the acccusations and then saying it didn't really happen are because the abused has ulterior motives for taking back the accusation. It makes it hard to distinquish the real truth in these cases. I have no idea where the truth lies with Beard. I do understand why the optics stand. In the case of those (like Beard) who end up in situations like this, you rid yourself of the baggage and move on. That's about all you can do so it doesn't happen again.

Winning makes everything fade away very quickly. There is an enormous amount of evidence of this across every league pro and college. Not a soul is talking about Ole Miss and Beard's past. Like it or not everybody gets a clean slate when they win as long as they're not a habitual sleazeball which Beard is not.

Some people didn’t recognize greatness in their presence. And they were proven wrong.
Wow! Shaka's still on a roll. Little Marquette is #7 in the Nation--I wish we were in that spot about now.
