OSU and Texas hook up again for round two, this time at Stillwater,OK. That 77-63 game won by Texas has seen the two go in different directions. While OSU won three straight after that game, they have lost five straight and are looking at six losses in a row if they drop the Wednesday game. Texas’ win was the second in a row at the time. After dropping the next game to ISU, the Horns went a six game winning streak that ended Saturday at A&M. Since that first game, OSU has gone 3-6 while Texas has gone 7-2. OSU is 6-6 in Big 12 play and in seventh place. Texas, at 8-4, is tied with ISU for third. OSU needs this game to get back into the hunt for that fourth spot in the league standings. Texas needs the win to regain some of that swagger they lost in the A&M loss.
OSU waits in Stillwater, looking to avenge the Austin loss. Andrea Riley [#10, 5-5 Sr. G] is the big name that catches everyone’s attention. That’s for good reason. She leads the team and the league in scoring at 27.0 ppg. She tops her team and is second league wide in assists at 5.3 apg. She leads OSU in FT % at 84.4%l She is the leading Cowgirl with 2.6 3s made per game. Tegan Cunningham [#1, 6-1 Sr. F] is second in scoring at 14.9 ppg. As many 3s as Riley makes, Cunningham (36.7%) and Lakyn Garrison [#00, 5-5 Jr. G] (34.2%) are more accurate from BTA. Cunningham is second in the team with 1.8 3s made per game. Look for Riley to take about half the team’s shots. Cunningham is the second scoring option on the team. Before Precious Robinson [#24, 6-0 Jr. G/F] was replaced in the starting lineup after the 10th league game, she would normally take the third most shots on the team.
Robinson leads in rebounding at 8.1 rpg. Cunningham is second with 6.4 rpg. Megan Byford [#33, 6-2 Sr. C] adds 5.8 rpg. Robinson (1.3 bpg) and Byford (1.0 bpg) are the top shot blockers for OSU.
Riley, Cunningham, Robinson, Garrison and Byford started the first ten Big 12 games. Toni Young [#15, 6-2 Fr. G/F] has started the last two games in place of Robinson. Instead of coming off the bench, Young now starts while Robinson comes in off the bench. Like Robinson before her, Young is now the 3rd option on offense for the Cowgirls. Lindsey Keller [25, 6-2 Fr. C] has played in all of the league games. Young had played in all league games off the bench until she moved into the starting lineup. Robinson has taken Young’s spot off the bench. While five others have played, none have been logging consistent double digit minutes.
In the first game against Texas, nine OSU players went into the game. But one only played 3 minutes. Riley and Cunningham each played 40 minutes. Garrison played 37 minutes. The Cowgirls have 14 players on their roster. Only 7 average double digit minutes regularly.
Horns are led by Brit (14.7 ppg), Ashleigh (11.8 ppg) and Kat (11.2 ppg). Cokie (8.8 ppg) and Erika (8.7 ppg) are just a bit off from joining the first three as double digits scorers in Big 12 games.
Brit (54-137, 39.4%), Ashleigh (58-124, 46.8%) and Kat (44-100, 44.0%) are the only Horns to have attempted at least 100 FGs in league play. They have taken 51.9% of FGs attempted by the team and made 51.7% of total FGs made. They are scoring 51.8% of the points. Kat (21-50, 42.0%), Brit (18-46, 39.1%), Ashleigh (11-24, 45.8%) and Erika (13-33, 39.4%) are threats from BTA for the Horns. Erika, though, may not be available. Brit (50-66, 75.8%) and Cokie (32-53, 60.4%) are the Horns that see the FT line most. Erika (16-17, 94.1%) has been the most accurate at the FT line while Ashleigh (15-18, 83.3%), Kat (25-28, 89.3%), and Lauren (13-15, 86.7%) are all over 80%.
Kat is the top rebounder at 6.5 rpg while Ashley is close behind averaging 5.3 rpg. Brit, Ashleigh, Cokie, Earnie, and Kristen all average between 3.8 and 4.8 rpg. Seven Horns have at least 11 assists with Ashleigh’s 39 topping them. Ashley’s 40 blocks is the best on the team with Cokie’s 11 second. Ashley is excellent at being able to swat away shots without picking up fouls. She and Cokie provide a solid last line of defense for our perimeter players. Brit (19 steals) leads a trio of Horns with double digit steals in conference play.Projected starting lineups, based on the last game played:
[pre]Texas OSU
Ashleigh Riley
Brit Cunningham
Kat Garrison
Ashley Byford
Earnie Young[/pre]
Riley will be the main focus of the Texas defensive effort. Yvonne was a big player in slowing down and harassing Riley into a 9-22 shooting night the last time the teams played. She also hit 3-6 from the field. Erika was the big offensive gun for the Horns, making 9-14 FGs, including 8-11 from BTA for 28 pts in 27 minutes. Cunningham and Riley had 50 of OSU 63 pts in that game. Cunningham hit 9-14 FGs (19 pts) to Riley’s 9-22 for 31 pts. No one else hit more than 2 FGs for OSU.
In this game, Erika, due to a knee injury, is day to day and may not play. Kat (10 pts) and Brit (11 pts), the other Horns in double digit scoring in the first game, will need to look to score a bit more. Others will also need to step up offensively to replace Erika’s pts against OSU. Cokie, who was 3-6 for 8 pts, could be a big factor in the paint. With OSU’s tendency to take outside shots, Ashley had just one block but did make her two FTs.
Our top three scorers average between 29.5 and 31.8 minutes per game. Nine of the ten players on the roster average over 13.8 mpg. The tenth is averaging 9.4 minutes. Riley and Cunningham are averaging over 35 minutes per game in league play. Since the fifth game, OSU has used three players extensively off the bench instead of two as in the first four league games. This gives them a comparable bench to the Horns. Fatigue may be a problem for Riley (unlikely) and Cunningham since they rarely come out of the game except for short periods of time, if at all. Unlike the Horns, who have found others besides our top three scorers to step up and lead the team in scoring, OSU relies on Riley and Cunningham as the primary scorers. In the last game, Horns forced Riley to work hard for her shots and points while trying to blanket the others. Cunningham had 19 pts while Riley ended up with 31, but the Horns had more balanced scoring. Only three others scored for OSU for a total of 13 points. The Horns picked up 28 from others besides Erika, Kat, and Brit. Except for one player that did not score, every Horn scored at least 4 points. While Yvonne was the primary defender on Riley, she had help. The same will be required for the Horns to emerge from Stillwater with a win. Balanced scoring and help defense will be needed.

This game will match the second and third highest scoring teams in the league. Both teams are in the bottom third in scoring defense although Texas has improved on that since the ISU game. Expect fireworks on the offensive side of the ball. OSU is better at making FTs. The problem for OSU is that Texas has made almost as many FTs as OSU has attempted (199 Texas made vs 204 OSU attempts). Consider Texas to have the edge here if the Horns can get to the line like they are capable of, especially Brit. Texas is fifth and OSU sixth in number of 3s made per game. Both teams are decent against the 3pt shot, with Texas fourth and OSU fifth. Neither may be able to keep the other from getting off 3s. But for Texas, that could be any of five or six players. For OSU, that is primarily either Riley or Cunningham. Texas has a better chance to shut down or at least bother OSU than the other way around. The last game these two played, both got off 20 3s. Texas made 11 and OSU 6. Of course, that basically was Erika vs Riley.
Should be an interesting game. Wish it was on tv.
It is offered online through the OSU multimedia dropdown box once you register for $9.95 a month. Still thinking about that but probably won’t do it.
A sideline will be Kat seeking to reach 1000 points. She needs one. Riley be looking to reach 2600 points. She needs 19. Good bet that both will reach those goals in this game. Horns will be seeking to reach their 20th win this season.
The game will be on KVET-AM 1300. It will also be carried on XM Satellite Radio Ch. 231. Game time is 7 pm CST.
