Opening Day Texas vs. Cal

NBHorn7

Pimp Daddy
It's opening day and the line-up should be what I posted in the other thread.

In other Big 12 games #7 Indiana shut out Tech 1-0 in Lubbock. Also OSU beats Incarnate Word 10-5 in Stillwater and Louisville over WVU 7-6 in ten innings at Morgaintown.

Kansas wins over BYU in a tournament game in Arizona 10-4.

Currenty Baylor vs. ASU in Tempe, AZ is tied 1-1 in the top of the 4th. This game is being broadcast on PAC 12 network.

Seton Hall defeats OU 7-5 in Norman.

#19 ASU leads Baylor 7-2 after 7 innings as four errors have undone the Bears.

Baylor has stormed back in the 8th and 9th to take a 9-7 lead over #19 ASU still batting in the 9th.

Meanwhile future Texas opponent #25 Stanford has taken a
3-1 lead over #15 Rice after two innings at the Sunken Diamond.

Baylor holds on to defeat #19 ASU in Tempe 9-7.

Rice now leads Stanford 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth.

Rice blowing it open leads 9-3 in the sixth.

TCU leads Jacksonville in Fort Worth 3-0 after 4 innings.

B. Marlow leads off the season against freshman Dalton Jefferies a right hander with a single.

Payton singles to left to put two on with no outs.

Hinojosa up lays down the sac bunt to move the runners along to second and third with one down.

Tres Barrera in a clutch situation in his first at bat as a Longhorn K's swinging for out two.

Andy McGuire another freshman has the same situation to prevent what plaqued Texas all last year.

He grounds out to short to retire the side. Again runners left on base in scoring position wanting for a clutch hit.

To the bottom of the first with Cal coming to bat with no score.

Thanks for the updates.

Parker French's first pitch of the season is a fly ball to left to freshman Gurwitz for out one.

The next hitter grounds back to French for out two.

A grounder to Marlow at second ends the inning in order.

After one complete inning it's 0-0 since I remember somebody told me saying there is no score is not right.

Montalbano leads off the second and flies out to deep right center for out one.

Kacy Clemens with his first ever at bat as a Horn and flies out to the warning track in center for out two.

Ben Johnson in right field is up next and another deep fly ball to left is out three.

After one and a half innings of play tied at 0.

French back out for the second to face Rodriguez the Cal DH.
He K's swinging on the curve for out one.

A fly ball to center to Payton for out two.

French walks the next batter on four pitches to all his first base runner of the new season.

The next batter also walks and that brings the first meeting on the mound of the year as Skip comes out.

Skips heads back to the dugout and French gets a pop in fout territory and it drops as Mcguire misplays it.

So French K's him swinging to retire the side.

After two innings in the books still tied at nada.

Freshman Zane Gurwitz in left field today leads off the third for Texas.

Yet another long fly ball to right is out one.

B. Marlow up for the second time grounds out to second for out two.

Payton up once more one hops one off the pitcher's glove is an infield hit for Mark to put a man on. Time for a first steal attempt maybe.

Hinojosa up once more grounds to short and a 6-4 force retires the side.

Going to the bottom of three still all 0's in the run category.

French back to the bump in the third faces the nine hole hitter
the shortstop Reubakamp.

He lines a hit to center and the lead man is on first.

The next hitter lays down the sac and French slips and throws the ball away down the first base line.

That puts runners on second and third with nobody out.

A fly ball to right in the alley and Payton also slips and then makes a dive for the catch. It's a SF that scores a run and the runner moves to third. Cal leads 1-0.

French gets another big K swinging for out two.

A fly ball to center retires the side, but an unearned run puts Cal to the lead 1-0 after three.

I know it's early, but it's like last season never ended so far.

Barrera leads off the fourth for Texas against Jefferies still on the mound for Cal.

He lines a single to center for his first Longhorn hit.

Fellow freshman McGuire is up next grounds to short for a 6-4 force out of Barrera and as he reaches first.

Montalbano up chops one back to the mound and it's a 1-6 force for out two as he reaches first.

Two down and Clemens is back in the box again. A balk on Jefferies puts Montalbano in scoring position and once again a freshman needs a clutch hit to score a run.

The pitcher didn't come completely set for the balk. Clemens walks and it's up to Johnson to break the scoring ice.

Ben with two aboard at first and second works the count full and the runners get a running start. He K's looking to retire the side.

To the bottom of four and a familiar 1-0 score still haunts my screen. Cal in the lead.

French in the fifth and a long fly ball to left goes off the glove of Gurwitch for a hit, he does hold the runner to first. That sounds odd, but that's what Way said.

The next man moves the runner over witha sac bunt.

One away with a man on second and French gets another K swinging for out two.

A line single off French goes into center for a hit, but for some reason the runner held up and he doesn't score. Runners on first and third with two away.

A pop up to shallow left is caught by Hinojosa to retire the side. A base running rock costs Cal a run to keep the lead at 1-0 Cal after five innings.

Gurwitz leads off and lines out to right for the first out in the 6th.

B. Marlow up as the top of the order comes around again. He works the count full and flies out to right for out two.

Payton up again with two hits in his first two at bats. He takes strike three and Payton is upset by the call and the umpire yells at him and the Texas dugout, but Mark stays in the game I think,

It's still that old 1-0 score with Cal leading to the bottom of six.

Augie has one of his famous pow wows between innings with the team. Will see what that brings.

French out again for the fifth gives up a liner down the third base line for a double. Another Cal run would look huge as a deficit the way it's going.

Oh my, a bunt back to French and once again the throw goes off the glove of McGuire and the run scores to make it 2-0.

The runner holds at first, the sac is good, but the second error on French results in another possible unearned run depending on what happens from here.

The next batter is hit by the pitch and Augie is out wanting to know if the batter offered at the pitch. He didn't according to the umps. Runners on first and second with no outs and a run in and out comes Skip.

Duke is up in the bullpen, but French stays in. Can't give up any more here and maybe even if we don't it may be too late now.Hate to say that, but I need this same old song to change verses to think differently.

A slow roller to short and Hinojosa fields and his throw pulls Clemens off the bag, but he gets the tag for out one.

Runners move up as it's just as good as a bunt. Their on second and third and it's crunch time for Texas.

Infield is back which is unusual in this situation.

a comebacker to French gets the runner from third in a run down and he is tagged out for two away.

Runners on first and second with two away now still needing a big third out to stay in the game.

Another walk loads the bases and it's up to French to keep Texas in the game and probably keep himself from being removed.

A pitch gets away from Montalbano, but he gets on it quickly and the runners hold.

A ground ball to Marlow at second takes a bad hop, but he makes the play and then the throw to first is dropped by Clemens and two run score. It's now 4-0 Cal on Texas's 4th error.

Now a wild pitch scores another run and it's 5-0 Cal.

The runner takes off for third and guess what? French throws the ball away for his third error and another run scores.

A ground out finally ends this monstrocity of an inning.

Cal leads 6-0 with all the runs unearned. What a house of horrors with more errors than hits.

Hinojosa leads off the sixth with a single up the middle.

Jefferies is still on the hill for Cal. We are being shut out by a freshman pitching his first game in college.

Barrera K's again swinging for out one.

McGuire lines one to right center and it's of course run down by the right fielder for out two.

Montalbano flies one into the alley in right center that drops and goes over the wall for a ground rule double. It would have scored Hinojosa easily, but of course it goes out of play.

Runners on second and third with two away and Clemens ground out to second to retire theside.

Another multiple hit inning goes fruitless for Texas, imagine that.

Cal leads 6-0 to the bottom of six.

French is done as lefty Travis Duke comes in to pitch.

French went five inning and gave up four hits and six unearned runs including three errors on him alone with a wild pitch that also scored a run.

Baseball is a funny game, but again Texas is not laughing.

Duke gets a roller to second for out one in the sixth.

The next hitter lines one to left for a single and it goes under Gurwitz's glove for yet another error their 5th of the night.

The runner stops at second.

The next man grounds up the middle and the ball hits second base and it goes straight up and Hinojosa grabs it. He has no play but it at least saves a run for now.

Runners now at first and third and out comes Skip and that's all for Duke.

Freshman right hander Blake Goins comes into the game.

He hits his first bater ever on a 1-2 pitch to load the bases with one away.

Here comes Skip once more and Goins is going with lefty Ty Culbreth coming in. Cal pinch runs for somebody I didn't catch it as this audio has been also going in and out all night.

A 4-6-3 double play ends the inning without any more damage.

I wish that it mattered, but it probably doesn't. The only mystery is if we get shut out and if the Cal freshman pitches a complete game on opening day, surely not.

To the seventh trailing 6-0.

Cal does remove Jefferies for a righty named Soimkin.

Johnson leads off the seventh with fly ball to center for the first out.

Gurwitz up again and he K's looking for out number two.

Top of the order again as B. Marlow is up and flies softly to lefto to retire the side.

Stretch time and and the bats need stretching as they are soundly sleeping again.

Cal leads 6-0 to the botom half of the seventh.

Culbreth back out again on the hill and he gets a swinging K for the first out.

The next hitter lines one to center for a single.

A K looking is out two.

A comebacker to Culbreth retires the side.

After seven complete 6-0 Cal.

To the eighth and Cal brings in another pitcher named Martinez a righty.

Payton leads off and he reaches somehow as again my audio from texassports goes out.

Hinojosa singles to left to put two on.

Of course Barrera grounds into a 6-4-3 double play as Payton goes to third.

McGuire with another chance to score a run grounds to short to retire the side.

Frustrating doesn't even describe this.

Bottom of 8th on the way and Cal leads still 6-0.

Chad Hollingsworth the tall right in now to pitch for Texas.

A hump back liner to second is out one for Cal in the 8th.

A fly ball to right gets over Johnson's head in for a double.

Here comes Skip wearing a path to the mound and he pulls Hollingsworth.

Freshman lefty Josh Sawyer is in now to pitch and he gets a ground ball to short for the second out and the runner holds at second with two down.

A single to center gives Cal their first earned run of the night to make it 7-0.

A ground ball on the right side goes through for another hit.

Two on and two out now and Cal pinch runs for the guy on first.

A foul pop is caught over the railing by Clemens to end the inning.

Cal leads now 7-0 as we go to the ninth.

One more at bat for Texas to try and score one more point or in this case run than a dead man to paraphrase an old Abe Lemmons saying.

Cal brings in another pitcher a freshman righty named Buckley.

Montalbano leads off the ninth frame with a grounder to short for out one.

Clemens without a hit comes up. He grounds out to first 3-1 for the second out.

Johnson also hitless is the last man if Texas is to show any sign of life on offense.

He flies out to left and that's it. Cal wins 7-0.

What can you say? It's just a poor effort by the bats again after all the off season talk. Then there were all the errors to make sure the game was out of reach, well at least to make it a lopsided loss.

As Yogi said "It's de ja vu all over again." I checked my calendar to make sure and it says 2014, but this looked just like most of 2013. Two more games to try to score tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see what Augie has to say if he agrees to do a post game interview.

To update some other games. TCU shut out Jacksonville in Fort Worth 5-0. Rice romps over Stanford 10-3 at Palo Alto and Cal-Poly shuts out KSU in a tournament game in Arizona.

It's the lower half of the order sucking balls like last year.

Slots 1-4: 7 for 15
Slots 5-9: 1 for 18 (1 walk)

What a joke! I hate to be negative so fast but it feels like the exact same trauma from last year. Was agony pulling for them.

Cal's 5-9 slots: 4-17 (4 runs, 3 walks)

Cal did what the bottom order needs to do. Got on base 7 times and let the top of the order bat them in. It's what Texas sucked so bad at last year.

Well at least there was a meltdown inning and several new bats probably had the first game (in college) jitters. I don't like it though, already making excuses for pathetic performance at the plate.
