One Saturday in L.A.

Background: I have one Saturday (17th) to spend in L.A. Totally on my own. Flight lands at 9am, I have a rental car, and I can do anything I want as long as it doesn't cost a billion dollars. Interests include food, unique off the beaten path types of sights and destinations,

My original plan was to land, find somewhere good for a late breakfast, kick around Venice Beach area for a while, maybe have a beer or two, look at the ocean, drive to a good lunch spot, and then spend the afternoon doing ??????. I'm free until 8pm.

Hornfans, GO!

IMO, nothing in LA is as entertaining as Venice Beach on a weekend. It's not an hour and a half drive from LAX. I have found some really good food and prices along the beach.

Another preet good restaurant is Ocean Ave in The People's Republic of Santa Monica. Obviously, it's on Ocean Ave overlooking the park.

Other than that, I'd say go South to Manhattan or Huntington Beach. Lots of scenery.

I thought about heading south as an option but I picked VB first because it's closer to LAX.

But I can be convinced otherwise.

Do NOT walk from Venice Beach to Barney's Beanery on the 3rd Street Promenade. Por favor!

If you want a decent breakfast, there are places along "Main Street" in Santa Monica where you can get a good breakfast. (I personally like Shoop's European Deli, but there are others further south on Main.) That's basically at Hollister & Main. (There is also an "Urth Cafe" there if you want to overpay.)

I also liked the fish tacos (usually grilled, not deep fried) at Pacific & Windward (strip mall) or you can walk along Abbott-Kinney and get some fish tacos there as well.

If you've never been, you might as well stroll on down there. Especially if the weather is good. You can watch guys play hoops where the "White Men Can't Jump" games were shot, watch some surfing (beach break waves), watch freaks walk around...

If you've got good weather, it's an interesting way to kill an afternoon.
