That can be the case,but not necessarily. Side note: when the flanker and SE are lined up on the same side of the field, usually, but not always, of course, the flanker is in the slot and the SE out wide.
Split end is usually your deep threat. They get off the ball just a little bit quicker, so you have a better chance that he gets past his man. Flanker can be faster or slower, doesn't really matter, but the flanker should have better hands and be a little stronger, since he'll draw tighter man coverage.
You would want a bigger flanker because he's used a little more on run blocking and he typically runs more routes in the middle of the field and must be a little bit more durable
