The steamer Sultana explodes killing 1700, including many expatriated Union POWs. Many had survived Andersonville only to lose their lives on their way home.
This remains the worst maritime disaster in American history.

May 8, 1945. The war in Europe ends. The German high command surrendered to the Allies at the HQ in France at approximately 2:45 AM on May 7 to take effect at midnight on the May 8th.

Hearing all these veterans of DDay and realizing how young they were , how willing they were to go into Harm's way for rest of the world really humbles me.
I am also in awe of how alert and still in life they are even though they are in their 90s.
These brave people walked our talk.

Too bad there are some on here that think people 70 have no place having opinions.

On this day in 1941, Battleship Texas was being stalked by a Nazi U-203 and her four 21 inch torpedo tubes under the command of Rolf Mutzelburg on her first patrol from Kiel to St. Nazaire in France.

Nazi Commander's request for permission to fire on the Texas were denied when Berlin is reported to have sent the coded message back that read "Don't mess with Texas".

50y ago today - The largest explosion in space history as the Soviet N1 Moon rocket Tyuratam collapses back to its launch pad shortly after liftoff.

"On July 3, 1969, on the very eve of the Apollo-11 Moon landing, Soviet engineers made their second clandestine attempt to fly their giant Moon rocket. However, the mission ended just seconds after liftoff with a colossal explosion, effectively knocking down the USSR in the Moon Race, just days before NASA astronauts walked on the lunar surface."

Seventy five years ago today, a plot to kill Hitler, seize control of the German government and armed forces, then sue for peace failed when the bomb Claus von Stauffenburg planted in Hitler’s conference room fails to achieve the objective of killing the German Fuehrer and then ending the war.
