Oklahoma State game - 1/8/2022

I think this OSU team is what happens when a basketball team takes weight training seriously.

I wish we’d go up tempo more often. Half court offense was lousy today. Rebounding was even worse. We had no answer to 7’ + Cisse.

Credit to the Cowboys though:
They hustle
They play D
They grab the boards
They’re physically tough

Tough conference—this Big 12

I just can't figure this team out. It feels like it should be a lot better than it is. Maybe it's sloppy stretches of offense, not having guys that you can depend on to step up and hit shots consistently. Maybe it's just not having a strong enough presence inside - we have some pretty good offensive players inside, but I don't know how good the defense is, and this team is supposed to be built around defense.

Basically we still haven't beaten a good team this year. That's discouraging.

Shoot….thought we’re we’re gonna pull that one out. Then the free throws shanka’d and we end up losing by a dozen. Fahk.

On a bright note—this may be the best defense we face all year. If not, then they’re really close to the best.

Just tuned in. Are we still giving up 30 offensive rebounds?
I don’t know the numbers, but at times it sure felt like it…

You know those football games when you want to throw stuff at the tv and you shout TACKLE!!!? It was like that at times in the second half, but with GRAB THE REBOUND!!!

This reminds me of my Mavericks, who turn pedestrian players into all-world on offense:

The Big 12 has 4 teams in the top 20. Three of them lost conference games today. This conference is really good.
When one of our top inside players is out, and we can’t get to the free throw line, we are going to struggle to win. And that’s true for most all the teams except BU.

I think the extremely weak out of conference schedule was a really bad idea. Now the team will have to figure out how to beat really good competion with conference games. I do not understand why the team played such a weak out of conference schedule.

I know, I know. A few non-conference cupcakes are nice to have, but we also need plenty of non-conference meat and potatoes. Gets us ready for conference play.

Not a slate of 8-10 Gonzaga’s, but a bunch of middle of the pack teams from power conferences. Even some lower middle teams (and lower) from power conferences. You know, a bunch of Stanfords, Rutgers, Miss States, Arizona States, Iowas, Minnesotas, Clemsons, NC States, etc. Only a few College of The Incarnate Words and UT-RGVs. Okla State is a lower middle of the pack Big 12 team—although their defense makes them especially dangerous even for better teams.

:soapbox:

Twitter exchange between Ketch and Penders. I love Tom P and don’t usually agree with Ketch. But in this case I think he’s pretty accurate.

Beard is going to need to recruit some big boys for next year.
+1 the inside game was non-existent. Ball passed around the perimeter without being able to get close in looks. OSU played great D, but we just couldn’t get it down close to the big fellas.

Clearly a sub-par offensive effort down low. But there are reasons particular to this opponent and this game.

1. Mitchell was out
2. Cisse is a stud interior defender, shot blocker, and rebounder.
3. They came down and doubled really well when we fed it inside. This is probably the best defensive team we’ll face. While we’re still #1 in scoring D, OSU’s defense is probably a bit better.
4. They are super physical and tough down low. I don’t recall seeing us get pushed around like this.
