Occupy Wall Street

I have to admit I haven't been paying too much attention to this. The mainstream media doesn't really seem to be covering this at all. And who can blame them? Ya know, with the whole Conrad Murray trial going on.

But it seems to be growing in strength and numbers. It is rooted in support from social media similar to what we have seen in the Middle East and Africa this year. I am suprised I haven't seen a thread on here about it.

What does everyone think about this? Is this going to be an isolated protest or are we going to see large protests in many cities? Is this going to end quietly or is this going to spark a violent incident which could set off mass riots? I think many people have been waiting for something to happen for a year or 2 with the deepening recession, the connection with Wall Street who seems to be doing well at times while the economy is being crippled, the increasing discontent with the US governement is very much paid for or at least heavily influenced by Wall Street, etc.

Thoughts?

I assume it is a loosely organized movement by the liberal left, hippie crowd. I don't think it has much of a following by the intellectual left as much of the following is rooted in misunderstanding.

As far as the sustainability of the movement, I think it is highly unlikely with a sitting democrat president. Any protests attacking the economy directly effect the president's polling. If the president tries to accommodate this group he will lose all of his support from independents and much of his support from fiscally minded, moderate democrats. This would be a disaster for the democrat party in the next election. As such, the organizers will be told to tone it down and the organizers will comply.

I watched a part of the lawrence o'donnell show on this. The main focuys seems to be Wall Street greed. We'lll have to wait and see if this catches on.

Side Note: Where are the Tea Bag yahoos, who were soooo against the debt, the bailouts, etc?

I guess going to the reuters link was too much trouble

to answer your remark trying to link the tea party with the idiots protesting Wall Street
the reuters link shows a sign from the protest
" JOBS ARE A RIGHT
CAPITALISM DOESN'T WORK"

This was originally an seiu organized event. Its very well planned. They just don't have enough rage or people yet. Hopefully, when they do get violent, they are taken out.

Hpefully when they do get violent? Kinda like the Colonists against the British? Or what?

I think that it is great that there are protests going on. Its nice to see people actually organizing to protest our Financial Warlords.

This left/right talk is stupid.

Hopefully there will be no violence, but there needs to be change. Real change. Not Obama change. Whether its a democrat or a republican or someone else, it doesnt matter. But there needs to be change. Our current system has destroyed our currency and our economy.

I thought the Tea Party movement basically started out of the failed Bush 2nd term??? So, in theory they wouldn't have been around for some of those issues that you brought up Roger.

I don't know if anyone read the link above, but these people are left-leaning morons. It is very clear in the Comments section.

There are many left leaners on this Board. I don't agree with your politics at all, but I can respect your intelligence. JM & Yo come to mind. Anyway, the left leaners supporting this "movement" are ******* idiots. Read the comments section.

I agree with some of the sentiment but I don't know how you change the dynamics of wall street and still keep the positives of wall street. The best I can come up with is regulatory package that brings a lot more transparency to compensation packages for execs.

I firmly believe that investors would veto those comp packages if they had a direct conduit to do so. part of the problem now is that most investors can't figure out what the packages entail.

So none of the 13 demands have anything to do with Wall St. And all are pipe dreams. Beautiful.

What happens when (not if) they realize that none of these demands will not only not be met, but not be paid any attention? What is their next move? This is actually really funny.
