Obamacare is Here to Stay

The law may not last forever but it is certainly here while dems are in the white house and control the Senate. GOP needs to win more elections and then try to get their aggenda through. They have shut down the govt and are wasting everyone's time. They are hypocrites b/c they caved on gun control that was hugely popular but they shut down the govt b/c they say they are representing the people who think this law is unpopular, even though the polls on that issue are less conclusive than the gun control issue.

The indisputable fact though, is that the provider of the services would have charged an uninsured person $55,000, three years wages for someone working minimum wage, for a procedure others will deliver for $2,000. Would you think it criminal if a car salesmen convinced an unsuspecting foreigner to pay $55,000 for a 2002 Chevy Venture minivan with 150K miles on it?

Sure there are collections probems. You charge someone three years wages for a 30 minute procedure you're going to have a helluva a time collecting because a person of ordinary means can't get their hands on this much money.

I don't have a problem with profits and cost recovery, but I'm not willing to leave it all to the conscience of medical concerns, because once it goes corporate (even non-profits) the single underlying value driving the company is "greed." You can "make" a lot of money charging a captive cllient $50 for a Tylenol, but there is no real value creation in the economy.

Actually, they would not charge the uninsured person $55,000. It would have created a totally different billing situation. In most cases, they try to work out a situation with such patients.

Your assumption that the medical provider is inherently greedy or criminal does not seem to allow you to consider the whole picture.

I'm sure Theiioftx that you know more about the billing situation than I do. But I know i've gone to the doctor once when I was briefly uninsured and felt pretty good about paying $70 for the office visit. Then I go the lab bill, which my insurnace pays about $14 for, but which I was charged more than $200. Maybe if there was price transparancy and I knew in advance what i was going to have to pay I wouldn't have felt so screwed over, but dealing with medical costs has been for me an exercise in knowlege acquired too late. Like arranging a colonoscopy with an in-network physician and surgicare facility and finding out only when the bill arrived that I had to pay a $1,000 for an out of network anethesist whom I had never met nor signed a contract. That money only counted towards my out of network deductible, which is so astronomical it's not even relevant.

Wait...we're not shutting the government down based on a simple majority on an issue NOBODY has clear line of sight to?

I'll say it again, the purely partisan new sources have done more a disservice to this Representative Democracy than any politician in our nations history.

Whether you like them or not, the Tea Party candidates are actually representing their constituency.

"BTW, it was the republicans who pushed through the 13th. Please tell me you are either not a UT grad or took your history classes at a community college prior to your UT education."

Hmm, take a geography lesson says the community college prof.

I think the Republicans are making a huge tactical error with the defunding fight. Let it get implemented ASAP so voters can see what a cluster it is before the 2014 mid-terms. Delaying Obamacare only helps Democrats.

UT, I absolutely agree with you. But there is no way Obamacare is here to stay. It was designed to fail and to be a stepping stone to a single-payer government run system. Harry Reid said it was absolutely a step toward single-payer. They knew they couldn't shove it down the taxpayers' throat all at once.

Maybe I missed it, but isn't Harry Reid doing the same thing in the Senate when the House sent him 4 bills?

This shut down is a good thing in the long run. I also think it is time to not raise the debt limit. Find the cuts to pay the interest and reduce spending.

Sooner or later, we must face our financial problems.
