Obama May Issue Executive Order On Gun Control

In the wrong hands, ill agree that guns are more dangerous. My comment was more about our inability to keep drugs out of people's hands. If we can't keep drugs out of their hands, why would we be able to keep guns out of their hands? Prohibition didn't work. Banning drugs hasn't worked. I think banning guns will end with the same result.

OK, how about an analogy using car insurance?

You can't force every person to buy it....and when they crash into your car, you are forced to absorb the blame.

I agree that automatic rounds (whatever the rounds are that don't require pulling the trigger) should be regulated, but as many others have mentioned, if a bad person wants to get their hands on one, they will.

You can point out any other country, but the US is different for a variety of reasons, so in my opinion it is apples to oranges.

Back to the original thread title -- anything the president does that violates the second amendment will be reversed in court. I seriously doubt he'd want to face the political consequences of trying to do something like ban the sales of what Congress has previously defined as "assault rifles."

With so many weapons of that sort already in private hands, such a ban would have to be in effect for decades before it would have any impact on the weapon's availability to bad guys who make a determined effort to obtain one.

Like a lot of these laws it does give law enforcement tools to prosecute. Sometimes they know the bad actors in a community and drugs, weapons, etc. give them an opportunity to arrest folks before they do more serious harm. Say a person known for domestic violence who is stalking an ex-wife despite a court order. If the guy has an illegal weapon, they have a tool to arrest and prosecute before he kills.

Since Pres. Obama doesn't have respect for any other branch of the federal government, the states need to start asserting their rights. The state of Wyoming is up to the challenge. I think that Texas should follow suit.

Once again Roger35 plays the race card. What does race have to do with gun control? Your last ditch arguments always end up calling someone racist. You make me miss Satchel.

The rate of violent crime has fallen by 22% in the past decade with mass shootings scarcely representing 0.1%. And the correlation between guns and violence in the United States is unclear. 30% of urban households 42% of suburban households and 60% of rural have at least one firearm. Thus, as one moves away from cities, the rate of gun ownership doubles. Conversely, gun violence is primarily an urban issue with most violence occurring in the inner city and few murders in rural areas. Thus, gun ownership and violent crimes in the US appear inversely related.

Ok, let's talk about semi-auto weapons. We ban them. What do we do about the millions already in existence? How do we keep new ones from coming into the country? See my argument about not being able to keep drugs or people out. There has to be a practical nature to banning something and I just don't see it with guns.
