NYC chokehold non indictment

There is obviously no way to prove anything as far as an increase in police brutality, but we can look at some numbers.

The population in 1975 was 215 million and that year there were 238 police deaths.

The population in 2013 was 316 million and that year there were 100 police deaths.

The average gun ownership rate in the 1970s was around 50%.

The current gun ownership rate is 34%.

So, we can see that even though the population has grown, the number of officers being killed by that population has decreased. This could be because of better police tactics or a safer population but the likelihood of being killed as a cop is near all time lows. Each situation is an individual one but in general cops today should not fear for their life more than in the past.

Gun ownership rates have also declined meaning that police are probably less likely to encounter people with guns. Once again, they must treat each situation individually but the threat of them encountering somebody with a gun is probably lower than at any time in history.

I tried to find out how many people are killed each year by police to see if I could find any trends. Somehow that data isn't available, which is absurd. If anybody can find any information on that, please share.

I heard/saw a stat on black men killed by police earlier this year IIRC it was -126-128
Every death is horrible and when the police are wrong they should be punished.

But isn't something wrong with the picture when 532 people were murdered in Chicago alone in 2012.
Why don't BO and Holder and all the race baiters address that?
YES go after bad cops but quit ignoring the problem year after year

I agree with you on saying lax gun controls help black thugs get guns.
But I am reading your post and I don't see a thing BO or Holder have DONE to stop blacks killing blacks in Chicago. BO talks and talks. The boy does love to talk.

What does the way the police interact with blacks in Chicago ( or any urban area with high black on black crime and murder) have to do with blacks killing blacks?

socioeconomic? Not enough jobs for the poorly skilled young black men?
well for sure BO " addressed" that issue with his EO.

again to be clear fire and punish any officer who deserves it
It must be done but shouldn't the largest issue also be addressed?
So when will BIO Holder Sharpton Quanell X Farrakhan etc etc etc demand any responsibility from the blacks who are killing blacks?

Larry, I'm not sure what your definition of brutality is? Rodney King = Yes, Gardner = No in my opinion. I don't believe for a second this was about race and I also don't think his intensions were for that man to die. I believe he hears suspects make claims they can't breathe all the time and he was more in neglect by not checking his safety than trying to bring death to him.

I think a great example of having police that address issue and are firm on law breakers is the Rudy Giuliani era as Mayor of NY. Average murder rate before him was about 2500 a year and it went all the way down to 400 one year. Rudy added a few thousand more cops and he cracked down on everything all the way down to prevented people doing window washing at red lights. They were causing trouble when they didn't get a tip they thought they deserved.

We can't lower our standards of how we act in society by making the police and the good civilians accept their behavior of thuggery. I'm not talking about the police in response to Rodney King. That should never be acceptable from our police. That doesn't happen very often but it does at a small fraction. But our leaders are promoting thuggery right now and it's very bad for America. Dammit we need a new direction in leadership. We have come way too far in race relationships to have what's going on right now and is being pushed as a political agenda by division. America should demand BHO and his group stop this. The media is the worse. CNN doesn't report the truth in the Michael Brown case and the people that watch that station have no idea that 6 black citizens testified what happened that matched Wilson's story perfectly. They never heard the forensics and they never heard the Autopsy report. CNN and others are reporting how good of a little kid he was. So the black community are in disbelief when it's handed down that he won't be indicted. If they would just watch fox news where they actually report the facts. By far the most trusted news on TV.

The chokehold incident does look brutal and much like police making a huge deal out of a small crime.

My issue is, we are seeing only the third act of a 3 act play. I don't think the 8 or so policemen were sent initially. I wonder what occurred prior to the video to generate what I feel was most likely an escalation of numbers of police at the scene.

While the choking is horrible to watch, again what is lost in the story is that the man didn't pass away until a few hours later. He wasn't strangled to death on the sidewalk. I am bothered almost as much as the officer who has his knee on the man's head, grinding it into the cement.

Situations such as this must be addressed, learning how to "talk someone down" v. going physical. Still, I do wonder what happened before the tape rolled. The answer may be why there was no indictment.

While I still believe that a chokehold IMO is deadly force (from marine corps cqb, while they can incapacitate, a blood or air choke was taught as a method to kill an enemy) and that the situation did not justify deadly force, I thought about this alternative scenario:

What if instead they tazered Garner, and he subsequently died from from exacerbation to pre-existing conditions. Would I feel the same way? I don't think I would, because tazers, while potentially lethal, are specifically designed to be a non-lethal weapon.

a little context for the numbers of police killed declining.

Some years ago a couple of FBI agents got in a shootout with some bank robbers. The agents shot the robbers and both of them died of their wounds. Eventually. In the meantime they killed both of the FBI agents, The agents were using revolvers.

Right after that all the cops switched to using automatic pistols, which hold a dozen rounds as opposed to just six.

And they started being trained to shoot until they felt they were out of danger. The result was that when the lawmen got in shootouts or felt threatened, they emptied a dozen shots instead of trying to aim and hit with one or two.

A lot less cops get killed now and I suspect this is part of the reason.

Back when I was an assistant DA I occasionally did ride alongs with cop buddies and always marveled at how restrained they were, in spite of the fact that there was invariably some ahole giving them zhit or assaulting them. I watched the Staten Island video and immediately said "shut up, you dumbazz, and let them arrest you." The guy was huge and the cops waited until they felt comfortable in numbers before arresting him. He should have just gone with the first one. He wanted to be a macho man, the fat jerk, and got to be dead for his foolishness.

I've been laid flat by a cop before when I was a mouthy kid and I learned my lesson from it. This moron had been arrested numerous times before and should have known better
