There is obviously no way to prove anything as far as an increase in police brutality, but we can look at some numbers.
The population in 1975 was 215 million and that year there were 238 police deaths.
The population in 2013 was 316 million and that year there were 100 police deaths.
The average gun ownership rate in the 1970s was around 50%.
The current gun ownership rate is 34%.
So, we can see that even though the population has grown, the number of officers being killed by that population has decreased. This could be because of better police tactics or a safer population but the likelihood of being killed as a cop is near all time lows. Each situation is an individual one but in general cops today should not fear for their life more than in the past.
Gun ownership rates have also declined meaning that police are probably less likely to encounter people with guns. Once again, they must treat each situation individually but the threat of them encountering somebody with a gun is probably lower than at any time in history.
I tried to find out how many people are killed each year by police to see if I could find any trends. Somehow that data isn't available, which is absurd. If anybody can find any information on that, please share.
