Nicknames and Mascots

I have always liked to chronicle the mascot names of Texas high schools. According to my memory two Texas high schools that were around in the Fifties and are still prominent today have undergone slight mascot name transformations.

Today's Highland Park Scots with their bagpipe music, black and gold tartans and tams were formerly called the "Scotties" and were represented by the Scotch Terrier dog or "Scottie". Perhaps some gray bearded Highland Park fan can tell us when the transformation took place.

As I recall, the present day Battlin' Billies of Fredericksburg High School, represented today by a fierce ram or dare I say goat were called the Hill Billies in the Fifties and were depicted as the long bearded variety thereof because they were and still are located in the Texas Hill Country. Perhaps some Fredricksburg geezer fan can enlighten us.

I went to Dallas TJ and we played Highland Park every year through 1963 and they had plaid Tartan colors at that point and I believe they were the "Scots" but I wouldn't swear to it since I'm half senile by now.

This might be a tangent, but I think Texas State University should change its name to TRU...Texas Republic University.

That's an institution I can get behind.

Pssst: I think the Hereford Whiteface is a type of hooved animal, possibly a different interpretation of the name than what you are imagining.

If you allow Spartans you have to allow Trojans.

The Illiad, the Trojan War, Trojan Horse?

I think that is an great nickname. Not trying to upset a great thread but I think Trojans would be a pretty cool nickname.

In my original home town there were some good PopWarner Team names:

Dukes
Crusaders
Spartans
Tojans
Saxons
Vikings
Those are the only ones that I can think of at the moment.

Falfurrias Fightin' Jerseys.

I know Bill in Sinton is familiar with us (at least during baseball season. This season not so much).

A lot of the good Texas High School mascots have already been listed, but here are some more:

Muleshoe Mules
Roscoe Plowboys
Pampa Harvesters
Palo Duro Dons
Mason Punchers
Nazareth Swifts
Texas City Stingarees
Port Isabel Tarpons
Devine Warhorses
Rotan Yellowhammers
Hamlin Pied Pipers
Cuero Gobblers
Robstown Cottonpickers
Frost Polar Bears
Port Lavaca Calhoun Sancrabs
Progresso Red Ants
Somerville Yeguas
Sharpstown Apollos

Mascots that encourage or promote criminal mischief are not okay with me. Sooners fits that description.

According to Dictionary.com, A Sooner is "a person who settles on government land before it is legally opened to settlers in order to gain the choice of location."

How about the Hutto Hippos... I did find out how this mascot came about in 1945 a circus came through town. Well the hippo got loose on a rampage and ended up in a query< mudhole im sure that is mispelled>. Anyway it took them forever to get him out and thats how the hippo became there mascot.

I take issue with rule, # 1 as well. Not all humanoids are cool mascots, but if the humanoid is of historic origin or regionally significant, it is usually pretty cool in my book.

Seminoles
Utes
Steelers
Boilermakers
Miners
Vandals (not that there is any tie to Idaho, but any team naming itself after an ancient barbarian horde that sacked Rome has my vote of approval)
Rebels
Cavaliers (UVA's sabers make for one cool logo too)
Volunteers
Jayhawks
Cornhuskers
Fighting Irish

On the other hand, some humanoid mascots are just too generic to be cool, such as
Cowboys
Redskins
Mountaineers (they get some credit because their mascot is just a filthy coon-*** that looks like he slept in a tree, who some out and fires a musket into the air - haw badass is that?)
Aggy

I agree on the inanimate objects thing, weather phenomana/music genres. That is so bush league/wnba/soccer.
