Newt On the Lazy Poor

How many times have most people run out of gas while driving? VERY rarely if at all, because if you run out of gas you are stranded and face a world of hassle before the trip resumes. There is no arguing with your empty tank about WHY you weren't able to fill up. Compelling though your reasons may be, they make no difference. Everyone knows that if you let it happen you are screwed and thus behaves with the appropriate foresight. Fail to exercise the appropriate foresight and you suffer the unpleasant consequences.

Imagine that the government introduces a "save stranded motorists" program. A nice municipal employee comes out at public expense and provides the stranded motorist with enough gas to complete the trip. Now the children get to school on time and grandma arrives at the hospital in time for her operation!

Now ask if there will be fewer people running out of gas and getting stranded after the introduction of such a well intentioned public service? Be honest with yourself and everybody knows the answer.

When you shield people from the consequences of bad decision making, more people are going to make bad decisions. It is literally as simple as that. I don't see how anybody could argue this point.

Hammer, this is an outstanding illustration of why our Nanny state needs to be reduced dramatically. We need safety nets for people in truly dire circumstances but not for folks going through "rough spots".

Bringing back the vocational education departments in schools will also do much good. Let kids who want to, learn an honest trade as an apprentice while finishing High School.

This whole No Child Left Behind ******** is a disaster. Putting every kid on a college track is a disaster. Newt has it right, whether idiots like Satchel believe it or not.

There are so many good ideas in this thread.
It apears the haters are trying to paint anyone who thinks putting poor children to work as saying all poor are lazy.

Nothing is further from the truth but some poor ARE lazy and some poor do not set any example for their children.
So why wouldn't everyone be for helping some of these children break the cycle.

Anyone who is against this, did you have any kind of job as a young teen? How do you feel now about it if you did.
I suspect most people will see the wisdom of this even if they have to pretend to hate it since it came from a GOP candidate

Negro is a color... Really?

You posted it in your OP... Again, I didn't mention color

How can you be so obtuse?

Let's see... Satchel brings up "lazy negro children", and when he is called on it he claims that he never brought up color. When reminded of the OP he himself wrote, he responds that "negro is not a color"... and then he mocks someone for painting themselves into a corner.

Yep... that sounds about right.

Here are some of the justifications I have heard from liberal mouths, with my translation added:

Society has failed them. (Translation: I feel guilty for being prosperous. I owe them, and so do you.)

Poor people struggle with alcoholism, drug abuse, and (in the case of blacks) years of slavery and oppression.
(Translation: Poor people, specifically blacks, are inferior and will never be able to prosper without my enlightened help.)

The rich can afford it. Most of them got rich by running a scam or they inherited it. (Translation: I am jealous and envious of others. It is not enough to enjoy my own successes and the fruit of my own work.)

I think if someone needs to see a doctor, they should be able to see a doctor. (Translation: I feel, not think.)

And my favorite, private charity "doesn't work." (Translation: All of the above.)

Some people have never been around lowlifes that work the system, and don't realize how much of that goes on.

The article's author would be offended at your inaccurate citation.
Again, I wrote "Newt and the lazy poor"

Are you close to getting it?

If he keeps saying it to himself over and over it will become reality if it isn't already.

I heard they were going to wear black sweatsuits, reeboks and drink purple kool-aid as well.
