New Softball Facility

I think CDC himself once mentioned, as did someone else on this forum, that the original McCombs stadium was designed as a "double-decker", but that plan was scrapped before construction started. What this implies is that the foundation was designed (and poured) to take the weight of newer, bigger steel columns to support an upper deck. This two-fer would also provide shade to the lower decks as well as solve the answer as to where to put a new stadium.

They have remodeled Gregory since 50 years ago... It still has that "older" look, but always fun to go there and watch the Longhorns win (if there are seats avail). But they do need more volleyball seating. :hookem: Does "Soccer or Swimming" sell out every game? I don't think we can point this to sports attendance. A new or renovating the Softball stadium should be in the works within a few years. This softball program is going in the direction we want to see. :hookem:
Factoring in the much needed renovations, it is a much cooler (in the summer) & nicer dump than it was 50 yrs ago.

Facetious meter alert?!?!
Sorry, but the Greg was a dump when I was there 50 years ago.

Im dead serious. Gregory underwent a massive renovation back in the 90s. It has a Duke Cameron Fieldhouse vibe, and it's literally in the center of campus. I attended a number of VB matches as a student and it was an awesome experience.

There is also a big *** lot right next door to the current stadium. It looks like it could facilitate a new field easily.

I'm truly happy you like the Greg. I understand it rcvd a/c in the 90's (a MAJOR upgrade) but the site-lines haven't changed (iron arches haven't disappeared) & the wood-topped concrete bench seats haven't gotten any softer or grown any more leg room. And the Volleyball Team has to RENT it from the Rec Ctr. My son & dtr-in-law have season tickets. They love vball, but think the Greg is a dump. I understand it has a retro vibe to it, but it has never gotten the sock-hop feel/smell out of it. That said, I really am happy you like it.

I unfortunately agree somewhat... I don't think Gregory Gym is really a dump. Just an old renovated bldg. with lots of good memories. After the embarrassing comparison to the first Nebraska game and the Cornhuskers bringing in 100K fans to game one, and the Longhorns only can bring in 4K fans... The local media and fans started pressing this for more attention to a larger stadium.
Afterall, we are TEXAS. It would be nice if CDC and the board would believe the Field of Dreams phrase "build it and they will come".
But also referring to McCombs stadium. :hookem:
