new look Mavericks: tough playoff style win

I was laughing out loud at the end of this game against Portland, when Dirk was sitting and the Mavs had Berea, and a bunch of no-names including Najera and the mask-wearing Jason Terry out there. I wondered who was gonna score for this team?

And then Eddie nails a three!

This team has some seriously good chemistry. I haven't seen this new version with the injured player yet.

they have a decent shot at the conference finals again.

Punting Josh Howard was a great move. The guys they added in that trade plus the trade with NJ for Kidd , both together, are looking pretty good.

I always like Caron Butler though.

It stilll won't be enough.

these are new look Mavs. they can lay bodies on you while still hitting 3's...which is required if they're going to make a run. Not hitting their shots will spell doom.

and Eddie confirmed my suspicions when he tried another 3 last night early in the game; a 3 that did not even come close to the rim!

rather be lucky than good.

The new look Mavs are a completely different team since that trade (for the better), but like we've said before it still wont be enough. Dirk is a great player with absolutely no killer instinct IMO. Still a great player non the less, and one of the toughest matchups in recent NBA history so anything is possible if he can get it going late in a series.

Great stats Bear on Dirk. He is ONLY about winning.

The chemistry on this team is outstanding and that means alot. They will play either Blazers or Spurs in 1st Round. If it's the Spurs - they are 2nd only to the Mavs in being the oldest team in NBA - and the Mavs have way more depth than them.

With the unfortunate torn meniscus by Roy the Blazers will be at a huge disadvantage. Expect the Mavs to move to the 2nd Round and play the Nuggets for the right to play in the Western Finals.

Nuclear Bear & wadster,

Im no Mavs fan, so I havent watched them religiously over the last 8 to 10 years like im sure yall do, but im assuming most of the stats that you just brought out are from the regular season....which is fine. But come talk to me when the guy makes a BIG TIME shot in the playoffs when it truly matters. I could be wrong maybe he has made a big shot in the playoffs, but i sure as hell cant remember it. So if he has, please enlighten me.

(Im not trying to start an argument or anything, so if im wrong than so be it cause i dont feel like doing research)

I don't think 98% is that big of an over exaggeration. He's shooting over 91% now and I thought I saw where he hadn't missed a 4th qtr FT for about half the season.

Horn69, you make some good points about the Spurs being long of tooth. But the Lakers have said on several occasions that the last team they want to play in the first round is the Spurs - why? because of the experience they have in the playoffs and 4 championships over a ten year period. So the Mavs would be well advised to prefer to play the Blazers, especially with Roy on one leg. Good luck!

The Mavs are not the Lakers. I would much rather draw the spurs than the blazers.

I posted all that to show that someone that says that Dirk doesn't show up in the playoffs or that he does not hit big shots in crunch time doesn't know what the hell they are talking about.

Ive watch Dirk do this for the past 10 years.

Dirk is one of the very few players in the league whos career playoff average in points and rebounds is higher in the playoffs than in the regular season. His 25 and 11 post season average is one of the top 5 or 6 averages from the past 10 years.

Only Shaq, Kobe, Duncan, Nash, and Lebron have been consistently better in the playoffs....and he's beaten Nash and Duncan before.

Go check out out the list of players that have average better than 25 and 11 in the post season over that many games.....the list is very small.

Take Dirk off the Mavs and they don't make the playoffs in any year. The failure of the Mavs to win a championship is directly related to the failure of Mark Cuban to put the necessary complimentary players around Dirk. This year's team is probably a better team than any Dirk has played on. It will probably not be enough to push them past LA but I think if they get the #2 or #3 seed that we'll see a Dallas/LA West Conference Final. LA wins in 6.

You get to find out...Mavs at #2. Be interesting to see if either of them get to the Western Finals.

Thanks NB. And the sad thing about this, DIrk will probably come in...5th? in MVP voting. The Mavs are going to have to do something special in playoffs to elevate Dirk's status, though you know LeBron and Kobe are firmly planted at the top.

My blood too still boils from the Heat series. I will always remember staying for the Trophy presentation at end of Game 6. Mrs. 69, who is this quiet little lady who's never booed at a sporting event, stepped up when David Stern took the podium and let rip the biggest, loudest "Boooooooo" I have ever heard any drunken guy give. It was how we all felt.

Thanks again Bear for the great posts.
