NEW IPHONE!!!

I have to think a Verizon iPhone must be in the works. AT&T is allowing early upgrade status, and they have raised their termination fees. They know a lot of iPhone customers will jump to Verizon in a heartbeat so it looks like they're setting up for that.

As far as the iPhone being available on other carriers, it is certainly a possibility, but I don't think its a sure thing. Apple has a very good situation with AT&T taking all of the blame for the iPhone's issues with connectivity. Apple has put battery life ahead of connectivity. Their exclusive arrangement with AT&T allows them to get away with that because people place the blame for network problems on AT&T and give AT&T a free pass. For their part, AT&T has the lowest turnover of any of the major carriers. So while they probably don't like getting blamed for what is primarily an iPhone issue, they are coming out way ahead by having the exclusive agreement with Apple because of the huge amount of users who don't switch to another carrier because of the iPhone.

If there isn't an exclusive arrangement, it hurts both Apple and AT&T significantly. AT&T loses a large portion of its user base who are only with AT&T because of the iPhone. Apple won't be able to let AT&T take the blame for the connectivity problems when the iPhone has similar issues on other networks. They might have been able to get away with that a year ago, but Android has caught up, and there are now several phones that provide a VERY legitimate alternative to the iPhone which didn't exist even as late as November of last year. So Apple definitely has an incentive to stick with AT&T so the iPhone's issues continue to fly under the radar.

I don't know enough about the technology, but I've seen some discussion that this could be an issue.

Also, there seems to be a lot of anecdotal evidence of people having signal issues with the iPhone with other phones on AT&T not having issues. I know that I had AT&T for a while with a blackberry and never had a problem here in Houston. The signal was at least as good as I get with Verizon now. I know quite a few of the people I work with have had a LOT of issues with their iPhones dropping calls.

It seems like there are a lot of people who have had the same experience with the iPhone having issues where other phones are fine.

I drop calls on occasion with my 3GS, but nothing like my Blackberry (random reboots, dropping calls at least every 3rd call, etc.). Wife has a different model of Blackberry, but on T-Mobile. Same issues as mine. Also had an HTC Windows Mobile with T-Mobile that dropped calls constantly and had a terrible, horrible battery life.

I have noticed that I tend to drop calls more often in Austin than anywhere else, but it's still only one dropped call in about every 20. I can never get any connection in DKR on game day. I get a full signal, but no network connection (can't send texts or make calls).

Not yet, promised my GF that I would wait until she could get the white one as well. Played with one on Saturday though and loved it. It blows away my 3G in every regard.

The signal drop issue is easy to reproduce and can lead to dropped calls, but was a non issue with the bumper case addition. It's aggravating b/c I would have bought the bumper with no issues, but since you 'need' it to keep from interfering with the signal I feel it should be free, or at least not $30.

good review of the hardware here with comparison pics from older models LINK

I picked one up this morning at an AT&T store. I got there a little before 6 and was about the 20th person in line. About 6:30 a guy came out and started taking down names and phone numbers. He got to about 30 people in line and announced that all were spoken for. He then gave out about 25 claim tickets to others in line for a shipment that was coming in later in the day. I've only had a chance to mess with it a little bit but it's pretty speedy, especially when compared to my old 3G.

Very fast compared to the 3G, and photo quality is excellent, as is the HD video. I have even been able to complete the occasional phone call on it, which is a nice bonus.
