Needed: Words of Wisdom

My favorite niece is graduating soon and will be heading off to one of many colleges--all "Upper Tier" that have accepted her. SHe was basically recruited by some like she was an athelete! This is partially due to the fact my niece is smart, but mostly due to her drill sargent mother. The 2 nieces from this family have gone ot private schools since kindagarten. No tv, bed at 9:00, and various classes and clubs picked by mommy to look good on an application. Basically, this kid had a very limited childhood, is extremely naive and sweet (despite bitchy mom) An example: grounded from prom because she got a B in AP calculus, oh what the heck , here's another, my niece came home from school one day and mom had given her dog away. It got the carpet in the mansion too dirty. Poor kid, I don't know how she has turned out as well as she has. My bro is an MD, pathologist who has the entire state practically using his lab, so he is a multi-millionaire, but as far as what happens at home--he leaves his testicles at work. I think he would divorce in a second but the wife put him through most of med school.

Anyway, that is the background. I would like to make her a book for one of her graduation presents that has words of advice, funny tips, what you wished you knew in college that you know now..I think you get the drift. Please no sex stuff; I want to make this special. I guess if it special sex stuff it would be fine, just don't want to turn it into a John 3:16 type. I would love any of your philisophical ramblings. If this puts some urgency in your remarks, her mom is trying to get my brother to send her to OU >shudder< Any and all thoughts will be very appreciated!

Well if hornfans had any piece of advice to offer, I'd have to nominate:

"The best things in life aren't things."

-Loree

Another one that I've learned the hard way- the risk that you don't take is the certain loss of what you stood to gain.

"the best things in life aren't things" is my all time fave. miss ya, loree.

that upbringing screams "failed out, excessive partying".

Man, I couldn't imagine a mom not letting her daughter go to prom after getting a 'B'. Poor kid.

I always liked the words of wisdom in Kurt Vonnegut's graduation speech:

Just tell her she'll regret it if she goes too crazy in college. But tell her to have fun. It sounds like it'll be for the first time in her life.

"Never let anyone tell you that you don't deserve what you really want."
~~R.I.P. Heath Ledger (10 Things I Hate About You)

Anything by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.

"Only those who risk going too far truly know how far they can go."
T.S. Eliot

Not really related to wisdom, but one of my favorite motivational quotes:

"I don't want to win unless I know I've done my best, and the only way I know how to do that is to run out front, flat out until I have nothing left. Winning any other way is chicken-****."
Steve Prefontaine

These are great and just what I needed and wanted! Please keep thinking if you can....
By the way, I truly am not worried about "girl gone wild" she has a good head on her shoulders. Now her younger, beautiful red-headed sister absolutely makes me wonder what will she do? A bit of a wild child by her peers comparison. She is a real life genius and everything comes incredibly easy for her, and I think you don't really know how to judge a person until you see how they respond to a big failure. Again, thanks very much for your help-bedhead

I'm afraid with that upbringing, which I would consider child abuse, that she will start partying like Y2K, so...

If someone in a bar bets you he can do triple backflips and walk on the ceiling, don't take the bet.

I'm a girl and don't exactly haunt that boards! I did think it was 3:16 because I accidently strayed over there thinking it was a Christian board. Color me surprised! Besides, it is kind of fun to get a glimpse of that side of men.

If you can, get a copy of a column written by James Lipton entitled "Here Be Dragons". It is the most insightful thing I've ever read about not being afraid of opportunity and daring to expand your life by taking calculated risks.
