Now that the season is over and we have a long wait for next year, I decided to list my top ten coaches. The only criteria I used
was that the person must be actively coaching in the NCAA.
1. Pat Summitt - Eight National Titles. I don't know what else the woman can do but win a few more. Her teams are always loaded with talent and it is apparent she knows how to get the best out of them.
2. Geno Arriema - Love him or hate him he seems to have a knack for getting his players to push it to the limit. Never mind that they all likely have to have therapy for years after he gets through with them. I don't care for the man or his tactics but he does get results.
3. Tara VanDerVeer - Seems to be a very classy lady who has a couple of National Championships in her pocket. Stanford is a tough school academically so I'm guessing recruitment is difficult at times but she seems to be able to consistently put together teams that can rock and roll.
4. Gail Gestenkors - I had to base her selection on her work at Duke. Though her teams have never won the "big one" she has taken them to the brink so she knows what it takes and it's only a matter of time. She had an amazing record at Duke and one can only expect the same will happen at Texas.
5. Sylvia Hatchell - UNC is consistently one of the top WBB teams year after year. She must be doing something right but she gets no "style" points for her wardrope..
6. Kim Mulkey - Another that you either love her or hate her but she's worked some miracles at BU and keeps loading up with top talent every year.
7. Melony Bacham - She did wonders with Vanderbuilt the past couple of years.
8. Van Chancellor - Maybe he can do for LSU what he did for the Houston Comets.
9. Gary Blair - His teams will be a thorn in the side of the other Big 12 teams.
10. Sherri Coale - Has that one National Championship but has not been able to do much with a team featuring the Paris sisters and a fairly good surrounding cast. Losing her touch, perhaps?
