My son's heart surgery *UPDATED 8-22* HE'S HOME!!

ANOTHER UPDATE HE'S HOME- see MORE pics below

My ten year old boy is having heart surgery on Thursday August 18th. He was born with a congenital heart defect which has required several surgeries. The last one was done 9 years ago at the U-M (that is one of the reasons the Wolverines are our second favorite teams, but no one wiill ever be above the Horns!!) but now it is time to replace the arterial graft on his heart described here. We just call it "the conduit".

The link shows the operation done in Ann Arbor when he was a year old, but part about the arterial graft described there is the same thing they are doing on Thursday. He has simply outgrown the graft but it has also begun to calcify and constrict the flow of blood to his body.

He's a great kid (as all children are), but he's also special to us. He is an only child and will have to remain that way due to complications during the pregnancy. He's tall and handsome at 10 years and 4 foot 9 inches. The kid absolutely loves building stuff, whether it's Legos or mud and sticks in the backyard. As you can see from the pictures he has grown up pretty normal, playing LIttle League Baseball, and as my golfing buddy once birdied two holes in nine that we played on par-3 course (one of them being a chip-in out of the sand)

. We have never held him back from trying ANYTHING, but lately his body had been telling him to slow down a bit and during the last visit to the cardiologist in June they noticed the constriction in the conduit, so now the time has come. We knew it was coming. In fact, it was a pleasnat surprise to the doctors that he got that much time out of the graft, so that helps in that he is just that much bigger and stronger.

Anyhow, I didn't think a whole lot about getting nervous before the big day, but frankly I am downright scared. The closer we get to the day the more apprehensive I get. I know he is in the best of care, but still, I hate the idea of someone so young and precious having to endure this kind of thing, even if it wasn't my own child.

Please pray for him or think good thoughts for him during the next few days.

Thanks you all.

You can bet he is in my prayers. The boy is strong dad. Have faith in him and those that will care for him. When he gets back, I'd like to schedule some golf lessons. My sand shots go sideways or backwards but never forwards.

What a handsome young man.
Please know he and you all are in my prayers.
Bless his heart soul and mind with peace and healing.

fawlty,

I cannot wait to start a family of my own some day. I will pray for your son and you and your spouse in this anxious period. He has a strength in him which looks to be endless. I know the Lord will hold his hand through the surgery and recovery. If it's not too much, I'll pray that he's healthy enough to scream and holler when we wax tOSU in game 2 next month.

in prayers. i hope the best for him.. my lil sister has been through this too.

God bless.

The surgery went well but it took about 2 hours longer
than the docs thought it would. The delay came with
them having to cut through the scar tissue from the
last surgery. That part took almost 4 hours just to
get through the tissue before they were even able to
open up his chest. The whole operation was right
around 8 hours total.

Other than that all went well and he was in the ICU
all night and there's a good chance he may be moved
from there to a regular recovery room later this
afternoon or tonight. Right now he is sore in his
throat from the breathing tube and the four chest
tubes in his abdomen are kind of uncomfortable but he
is breathing on his own and earlier this morning they
took him off the pace maker and his heart is beating
at its own rhythm just fine.

I just want to thank all fo you for your prayers. I showed this thread to my wife just a little while ago and she just started crying at how much strangers are willing to share their hearts to someone in need. Again, THANK YOU ALL!

I'll provide more updates as things go on including when we expect to bring him home. Right now it looks like the middle of next week.

that's awesome news to hear. God is full of grace and mercy. Don't you know, we're all brothers and sisters through Him. No strangers in this forum for sure. I hope your son continues to improve day by day. Continued prayers your way.

fantastic. prayers to a quick and healthy recovery.

bless y'all.

SO far so good. In fact, things are going really well. He was moved from the ICU to a regular recovery room Friday at about 5pm; roughly 25 hours after the operation was done. Thursday was pretty eventful. On Thursday night the breathing tube was taken out and he was breathing on his own. On Friday the docs took out two of the four chest tubes, an line from his jugular (it was stitched in places..ewww!), the pacemaker wires and a few other lines and stuff stuck in his body in various places. Saturday morning he woke up feeling pretty comfortable (well, I guess comfortable enough for someone who just had his chest opened!) and moving around a little more on his own. We got him to stand up for a while adn walk around his room alittle, but he said it made him dizzy so we will try again more today. If things keep going like this it's looking like we may be able
to take him home early in the coming week like Monday or Tuesday.

Here's a couple of pics from his room. He has a great window view of downtown Dallas you couldn't get in most hotels in this town.

OK so we got to bring him home today, only 5 days after having the surgery where they opened up his chest, had to cut out a section of an artery put in almost 10 years ago and graft in another pice of artery in it's place.

He was walking all over the hospital yesterday. And today he was being a smartass and decided to RUN by the nurse's desk on the way to the Aikman Room ( a playroom for kids). Teh docs said he looked great so we came home today. We didn't get back until 9pm because of a late echo done on him and then another emergency on our floor, but at least we're here now.

So I showed him this thread and he wanted me to take another picture of him here at home and showing off his stuff wanting people to see how much of a tough guy he is. So, here it is. Not very bright becaus eit's in our den but you can see his stuff. He's got every right to think he's a tough guy afetr all he went through and how fast he recovered. Hell, I whined like a little ***** back in March when I had back surgery where I was in and out in the same day and here he is running.
