I'll always have the memories of what he showed me about himself:
He & his friends swimming in the buff at the old Missouri pond around 1918,
How he loved his old dog Jip,
Scoring all 8 points for his high school basketball team vs Maitland in 1927,
Going off to the University of Missouri in 1929, the first of our family to graduate from college in 1933 (Cy Young was one of his classmates),
Living in a tent in the snow while fighting the Japanese for 7 months in the Aleutian campaign of 1942,
Evading capture by the Germans in December, 1944,
Promotion to Lt. Col. in the regular Army in 1947,
How proud he was when my brother made him a grandpa in 1959,
How much he enjoyed being an educator after his retirement from the military in '59,
How devoted he was to my Mother when she survived cancer in 1975, and how he nursed her lovingly through difficult times the last 10 years of her life until she died in 1992, after 56 years of marriage,
What a loving, caring family man he was all his adult life,
And most of all what a good honorable man he was,
I will miss him terribly until I die.
