My 2012 Oscar Predictions.

The "Best" in each category is where I predict the Oscar will go.

"My Second Place" is where I expect the Oscar will go, if my prediction of the winner is wrong.

"Dark Horse" is a nominee that I think is genuinely worthy, but I'd be quite surprised to see the Academy vote that way.

"My Personal Favorite" is the movie or performance which I personally liked best of all those nominated in that category this year.

So here goes.

Best Picture: "The Artist."

My Second Place: "The Help."

Dark Horse: "The Descendants."

My Personal Favorite: "The Artist." It would be "My Week with Marilyn" had it been nominated.

Best Director: Michel Hanazanius for "The Artist."

My Second Place: Martin Scorsese for "Hugo."

Dark Horse: Woody Allen for "Midnight in Paris."

My Personal Favorite: Michel Hanazanius for "The Artist."

Best Leading Actor: Jean Dujardin in "The Artist."

My Second Place: George Clooney in "The Descendants."

Dark Horse: Demian Bichir in "A Better Life."

My Personal Favorites: Demian Bichir in "A Better Life" or Jean Dujardin in "The Artist."

Best Leading Actress: Viola Davis in "The Help."

My Second Place: Meryl Streep in "The Iron Lady."

Dark Horse: Michelle Williams in "My Week with Marilyn."

My Personal Favorite: Viola Davis in "The Help" or Michelle Williams in "My Week with Marilyn."

Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer in "Beginnings."

My Second Place: Max von Sydow in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close."

Dark Horse: Nick Nolte in "Warrior."

My Personal Favorite: Christopher Plummer in "Beginnings."

Best Supporting Actress: Octavia Spencer in "The Help."

My Second Place: Berenice Bejo in "The Artist."

Dark Horse: Janet McTeer in "Albert Nobbs."

My Personal Favorite: Berenice Bejo in "The Artist."

Those are the six main Oscar categories.

I'll also pick these as winners:

Animated Feature Film: "Rango."

Art Direction: "Hugo."

Cinematography: "The Tree of Life."

Costume Design: "Hugo."

Film Editing: "The Artist" or "Hugo."

Foreign Language Film: "A Separation."

Makeup: "The Iron Lady."

Music (Original Score): "The Artist."

Sound Editing: "Hugo."

Sound Mixing "Hugo."

Visual Effects: "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."

Writing (Adapted Screenplay): "The Descendants."

Writing (Original Screenplay): "Midnight in Paris."

I saw all the nominees in each of the first 6 main categories I've predicted and saw all the winners I've chosen in the next 13 categories (and many of the other nominees).

I didn't see any of the Documentaries or Short Films which are up for awards this year, so I've abstained in those 4 categories.

And I didn't like either of the two original song nominees as much as the great Sergio Mendes hit, "Mas Que Nada," which was so prominently featured in "Rio." That song, of course, is ineligible for nomination because it wasn't written for the movie, so I've abstained in this category too.

We'll see how it goes.

Your thoughts?

I haven't seen them all, but I thought Rooney Mara's performance in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was just stunning--a repressed Audrey Hepburn on the outside, a samurai warrior on the inside.

A lot of wise choices, Fred. I differ on "The Descendants" which I thought was a B+ concept with C execution. I was surprised it won the Golden Globe.

"My Week With Marilyn" is very good and I think Michelle Williams was quite wonderful. I think that movie is more worthy than War Horse, Extremely Loud, and the Descendants.

"Tree of Life" and "The Artist" are my favorite movies of the nominees. "Moneyball" is a strong effort, too. Interesting that Tree of Life and The Artist neither depend on dialogue to drive them. Just watched "The Help" last night. Good movie although a little rambling.

I'd vote The Artist as Best PIcture with a pain in my heart for Tree of Life which is excellent and extraordinary except for the ending.

I'd go with Jean Dujardin for Best Actor although I haven't yet seen A Better Life and Tinker Tailor

Great choices for Supporting Actor. Your choice of Plummer is solid and in a virtual tie with Jonah Hill from Moneyball, Branagh in Marilyn and Max von Sydow (one of the few good things about) Extremely Loud (Sandra Bullock was the other thing about the movie that was good).

Actress? Rooney Mara was great, but I go with Michelle Williams as Marilyn. That role is so difficult, and she did brilliantly. Viola Davis was wonderful, too.

Supporting Actress: I love Berenice Bejo from The Artist, but that really seemed like female lead. I think Melissa McCarthy was very good in Bridesmaids (another movie better than some of the Best Picture nominees). As much as Berenice made me love her, I think Octavia Spencer of The Help deserves the award.

Best Original Screenplay: Margin Call. Great movie that I saw last weekend. Brilliant dramatization of a difficult subject. It helps that the cast was exceptional, but the screenplay is solid. The Artist and Bridesmaids are tied for second in my opinion.

I will advise everyone to go see The Artist. It is great fun and remarkable that it is silent. Exceptional date movie, I would imagine.

Missed on:

Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Cinematography.

Costume Design.

Fim Editing.

Visual Effects.

Got 14 out of 19 predictions correct.

Lucky me.

Good picks by Fast Fred.....film fan par excellence.

My daughter and I saw "The Artist" Sunday afternoon. I thought it might be the movie to beat and wanted to see it before the Oscars. Sure enough, it is an excellent film and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to leave a theater feeling good, and not feeling like you've been beat down for a coupla hours.
