Well it looks like Green is officially on the Texas radar
Applewhite takes in SA Madison vs SA Lee
Madison's Green, Williams storm past Lee
Racing down the sideline for another long gain Thursday, Madison sophomore Aaron Green almost knocked over a man in a black jacket as he ran out of bounds.
Aaron Green, meet Major Applewhite.
Applewhite, Texas' assistant head coach and running backs coach, watched the No. 3 Mavericks roll to a 47-14 over Lee before 2,343 at Comalander Stadium.
“I thought that was Applewhite,” Green said. “I've always seen him on TV, but I don't know why he was here. I hope he enjoyed it.”
Green rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns while sophomore fullback Troy Williams had 111 yards and added a score.
Madison's first-team offense put on a show for Applewhite, scoring on all five of its possessions before it was taken out midway through the second quarter with a 34-0 lead.
When Alex Montgomery returned a punt 70 yards for a TD midway through the third quarter, Madison (7-1, 5-1 District 26-5A) had a 47-0 lead and Applewhite had seen enough.
Green's play of the night was an 8-yard TD run in the second quarter. He started to the right but found nothing. So he retraced his steps to the line of scrimmage, avoided a Lee defender, then ran left to the end zone.
He also scored on a 20-yard run in the first quarter and finished with nine carries.
Green now has 1,453 yards and 20 TDs for the season, passing Clark's Jock Tilghman (1,451 yards) to become the area's leading rusher. Clark is off this week.
Madison quarterback Leo Gutierrez suffered a right shoulder injury on Madison's opening drive, but later returned and threw a 9-yard TD pass to Chris Doring.
“The trainers said my shoulder popped out of the socket but went back in when I hit the ground,” Gutierrez said. “I felt good throwing on the sidelines so I went back in the game.”
Backup quarterback Kevin Cortez ran for a TD and threw one to Alex Montgomery.
The Mavericks defense also did its part, holding Lee (2-6, 1-5) to 43 first-half yards. Senior Tyler James also recovered a Volunteers fumble.
Madison was coming off a 44-21 victory over Churchill where the Mavericks had three turnovers in the first three minutes. Mavs coach Jim Streety said starting strong was the focus this week, and Madison had a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
“We weren't happy at all last week,” Green said. “This time, we had to be ready.”
