Mueller in Bastrop ?

No. If he did, best of luck but damn, did he play pin the tail on the map of Texas and miss Austin? If I will drive to Llano for Coopers, I will to Bastrop for his cue.

I have a good friend that has worked for John for years (back to when he was still with his dad in Taylor). I will give him a call and get back to you.

my friend reported back and yes is the answer.

swTSU is right - he also thinks - about it not being named mueller's.

may be making a trip out there very soon

Just curious. If John couldn't make the rent in Manor, is Bastrop that much cheaper that he can turn a profit? Is there more to the story (i.e., too much competition in Austin)?

I stopped by every chance I could when I am down from Dallas so was really sorry to see him closed up shop. I hope the Bastrop location works out better for him.

Review from Chowhounds:

"Today I checked out "John S. Mueller's Old Town BBQ" in Bastrop. I had a generous brisket sandwich there and took home brisket and pork ribs. The brisket was tender, nicely charred, and flavorful; the pork ribs delicious enough to gnaw off every last bite of meat. I forgot to try the sides, so I can't comment on them. Sweet and spicy sauces are offered; I still like the spicy one. But, sides and sauce weren't my focus: I wanted to know about the meat. It's as good as I remember it being at his old place on Manor Road. On the drive home, I could barely keep myself from pulling over to eat more.

The new place is pretty nice. It's a wood building set back from the road (Pine Street) with many small tables outside in the shady yard and a couple of spots to eat inside, near the counter. It wasn't crowded when I went (I was there at 3 P.M.--an off hour). I got to talk to John, who said he misses Austin but seems happy to be part of the small-town 'cue tradition.

Old Town BBQ is open until 6 P.M. Monday through Saturday, though I can't remember exactly when it opens--maybe 10 A.M. I'll definitely stop by the next time I'm driving through on Hwy 71."

Well, good news and bad news. We got there late, I had to get a new tire, mine had a big air bubble from a wreck Thu night/Wed morn.

Anyway, we got there a bit afte 3, and JM was sold out of food. Sucks for us, but I'm glad for JM. The smoker was still smoking and it smelled so fantastic. Definitely have to take a roadie down there soon.

the thing that sucks about bbq bus. is that it is hard to guess how much you will sell in one day - especially in a new place. If you don't have another way to sell what you don't sell (catering and the like) you don't want to over cook or you lose money.

If you don't care about quality you can cook enough to make due for the whole day - and if you have some you don't sell, you reheat it the next morning and have that be your first out. On somethings that is more feasible than with others. Brisket and sausage it is feasible to reheat 3 times (with the last one being awful). Ribs and such - not so much. Then there is the whole part about chopping it up after you have tried to sell it a couple of times and making chop beef,

John cares too much about the quality and not wasting money to do it any other way. It is the way he learned it from his dad, and it is what he likes to pride himself on. I understand as a consumer wanting to be fed when I go to eat, but I also understand the problems that poses for John.

I really enjoy his food (when he is on his game) and love the hell out of some beef ribs from his dad in Taylor. I hope like hell makes it work out there, because he is a hard working guy that deserves to do well.

dendox,

yeah I agree with you. I knew it was a danger, and certainly don't blame John. His calling card is his fantastic cue, and no need to compromise that for a couple stragglers. Just pisses me off at the guy who ran the light and hit me! I should write 4 meals of JM cue into the settlement, ha.

I did tell several people at the tire shop while looking for directions of his shop and they seemed interested, I'm pulling for him.

Made a trip over for lunch today. John was working the store all by himself and actually recognized us as old customers from Austin. The brisket was just as incredible as ever. I ordered a 1/2 pound wet and it was worth it. Also had a couple of pork ribs that fell off the bone.

Problems: No inside seating. We sat outside, which in early May is no big deal, other than there were flys (flies?) everywhere.

Oh well. The cue was worth it.

what's the name and location ?????.....I've heard first that it was on the courthouse square and then that it was next to a mill work shop on Water St......

I am meeting my dad there Saturday before the baseball game, so I can give updated reported on Monday. I just spoke to John on the phone. He seems happy, but still somewhat bitter about leaving Austin. They are located at 705 Pine Street for those looking.

I tried to stop there Friday on my way to Austin and he had no bbq ready (granted it was 10:30 AM)

It's right across from the courthouse.

Go##$%! M#!*^% F$#@!!!!

I had a site visit yesterday afternoon out off of 71, past Bastrop. I timed my departure to put me in Bastrop around 11:45 for lunch. We went by John's place -- it's easy to find, and has a GREAT shady outdoor seating area -- my kids would love the place.

As I walk up to the door, there is a sign in what I recognize to be John's handwriting -- "closed Tuesday May 16th. will be open Wednesday the 17th" (or something like that -- the point is that he was closed for a random day). So, my starving, barbecue-craving self and my co-worker had to go elsewhere.

We had talked about the China Chef buffet on the way in, commenting that we imagined that you just couldn't expect too much from a Chinese buffet in Bastrop. Well, we had our chance to find out, and we both decided that we ought to gut up and just do it.

It was everything that you would expect from a Chinese buffet in Bastrop.

It was not John Meuller's cue.

So is this wonderful gonna be just like Where's Waldo? Where will it sprout up next. I so hope he is okay and the family as well and he lands on his feet and ends up running. His cue is too good not to be made available to us.
