Movie Recomendations

I agree about the follow up, it'd be nice to see what you liked and didn't like from these suggestions. There are a lot of good ones.

Better known movies off the top of my head that you may have missed:

It Happened One Night (Gable and Colbert 30s classic)

The Best Years of Our Lives (Post WWII classic that I can never turn off when I see it on cable)

Out of the Past (Best Noir film, I'm not overly crazy about the genre, with Robt Mitchum and Kirk Douglas in an early "heavy" role)

Hombre (Paul Newman western that is a very clever twist on "Stage Coach." An all time favorite western)

Ulzana's Raid (Burt Lancaster, 1970s Western) Sort of Hombre to an even further extreme. So many expectations are brutally turned on their head. Raw movie.

The Wind and the Lion and The Man Who Would Be King (mid 70s, Sean Connery in both) Two of the best action/adventure movies that received little fanfare that I recall when released. The first is a great John Milius work, the second John Huston's last great film. Both are visually sweeping and have a sense of humor.

A quick list of little films off the top of my head:
The original El Mariachi (not with Antonio Banderas)
Croupier (Clive Owen movie with luscious Alex Kingston)
Bottle Rocket (Wes Anderson's first movie. Anderson is rightfully revered on this board)
The Little Murders (1970s Elliott Gould) Off beat movie that may be dated but still makes me laugh.

Two great Australian war movies:
Breaker Morant (1981) Boer War court martial movie.
Gallipoli (1982?) Mel Gibson early role, WWI and the Aussies are hot to get into it. Heartbreaking.

That ought to be enough random thoughts for now. Happy viewing!

I'll second Gallipoli and add Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead to the list.

I also really enjoyed the mockumentary The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico.

I'll second "The Man Who Would Be King", but caveat that you should only get it if you have a nice TV setup. If not, wait until you do; the cinematography is great, and the two stars (Connery and Caine) are allowed to let their personalities rampage. Ripping stuff.

I'll suggest "The Long Goodbye", and "Le Samourai".

"Hombre" and "Ulzana's Raid" are two very good movies.

There's a post-apocalyptic movie with Rutger Hauer called 'The Blood of Heroes' that I liked a lot...caught it late night on HBO about 15 years ago...it's always stuck with me as one of those surprise good movies....

Some foreign suggestions:
Run Lola Run (German)
The Red Violin (Canada)
To Live (China)
Yojimbo (Japan)
