Movie Recomendations

Okay,

So I just signed up for blockbuster online. Any suggestions on what to add to my que. Obviously I'm looking for movies that you can't pick up at your local blockbuster.

Darn, can't help you. If you had said "Netflix", I would have had plenty of recommendations.

Seriously, though. Start with "Primer." Will scramble your brains.

Thanks. Its been added. I thought about netflix, but I couldn't pass up being able to pick up movies at the local store.

Also, these movies don't have to be new. Or obscure.

It would help if we knew what kind of movies you like...

A couple of my favorites:

Stalag 17
Alien
Memphis Belle (there's a movie and a documentary with the same name, they're both good)
Objective Burma
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
Fort Apache
Batman Begins

Thats the thing. I want to get a list of movies that I would never think of renting. I already own most of the movies that I like, so I want to see some stuff I'm not familiar with. Maybe a better way to phrase it would be "What are your favorite movies, that probably aren't at your local blockbuster?" I thought about just doing a list of favorite movies, but I think everybody would just say star wars, lord of the rings, and harry potter.

I thought about printing off a list of all the oscar winners for best movie, but thats the same list that pick Ghandi over ET, so I didn't want to limit myself.

I figured that about "Man of the House" I got roped into that (Texas cheerleaders what can I say), but I was thrown off by the fact that there was another one.

If you haven't seen these shows, you might want to consider them:

#1 - The Shield
#2 - Deadwood
#3 - 24
#4 - The Sopranos
#5 - Lost

IMO "The Shield" is about the best TV series ever.

Maybe a few of these might be worth a look. (They are some of my favorites.)

The Falcon and the Snowman
Sleuth
Marathon Man
The Emigrants/Utvandrarna
The New Land/Nybyggarna (these two are with Max von Sydow and Liv Ullman)
The Seven Samurai
The French Connection
All the Presidents Men

Here's some really good ones:

"The Painted Veil"

"Hud"

"To Kill a Mockingbird"

"Cool Hand Luke"

"Fargo"

"The Cooler"

"Frailty"

Let us know what you think after you've seen them.

These aren't necessarily my favorites...just movies I liked that don't play on some movie channel or TV station every few days:

Tin Men
Reservoir Dogs
The Big Chill
Diner
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Young Frankenstein
The Family Man
Dad

"I love you Alice B. Toklas" starring Peter Sellers

The original "Bedazzled" from 1967 with Raquel Welch and Dudley Moore

Chilly Scenes of Winter (dark romantic comedy)
Crossing Delancy (Very good romantic comedy by same director)
Starting Over (Burt Reynolds, Candice Bergen, Jill Clayburgh) I think this is one of Reynold's best movies and Candice Bergen as a rising feminist singer is pretty great. Came out in 1979 or so, still pretty funny.

Thief (Michael Mann director) Tough, tight movie.

Blue Velvet (Lynch)
Something Wild (Demme) Interesting movies from the early 80s, pretty good double feature.

The Long Good Friday (British) Helen Mirren and Bob Hoskins with interesting small part for Pierce Brosnan. Hoskins is an underworld figure whose empire is under mysterious attack.

Red Rock West (Nick Cage, Dennis Hopper, Laura Boyle) Noirish, plot twisty movie.

These are movies I remember not finding in Blockbuster a few years ago when I was looking. I'm trying to name movies I liked a lot that were not classics or big enough to make it to the shelves of the big chains.

Thanks everybody. I'm up to 52 movies, and I haven't let my girlfriend choose any yet.

Roma, I'll some of the ones you suggested. And, I wouldn't mind if you mentioned some of the classics & popular movies. I just want to get a thread that every other post was "Rudy, The Natural, Star Wars, ect" (not that I don't enjoy those, just wasn't what I was looking for.

(I also added the UT Rose bowl game, and another called "The Legends of Texas Football")

A few more:
The Boston Strangler
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (Campy horror picture w/Vincent Price)
Dr. Phibes returns (VP again)
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Day of the Jackal
Rio Bravo
El Dorado
Sneakers

A couple of Cary Grant movies:
Philadelphia Siory
Bringing Up Baby
North By Northwest
