Move to SEC seems to have helped aTm

Unfortunately before he can worry about LSU and Alabama, he has to worry about the pig people and MSU.

orangeclad, i wouldnt put us at all in the same category as USC, texas, bama etc.

but i disagree with you about A&M being destination type of job...again, certainly not the level of those stated above...but i think we're so starved for success that if sumlin did come in and win, we'd give him all the money in the world. you also underestimate how naive our brass is...****, we gave fran an extension and a raise after a 7-5 season and did the same for sherman after a 9-4 season. our standards are incredibly low and we reward "success" based on those standards. if sumlin comes in and wins just 9 games in one of his first three years on the job, he'll be given a blank check.

do we have more potential for success as a football school than texas tech, kentucky, etc? in my mind yes. the infrastructure as far as facilities, recruiting base, fan support is there. we've just woefully underachieved due to mismanagement of our programs at all levels. but that doesnt negate the potential we have. if okie state can get to a rose bowl, we have no excuse whatsoever.

I don't disagree Joe. As I stated, A&M has far exceeded those schools that are in similar geographic conditions and reputation, if for no other reason than for just pure stubborness and refusal to go down without a fight. Not many schools can boast a star FB player in the front seat of a truck with a handful of junk, rushing and still trying to reach Utopia before the cop gets across the parking lot to arrest him. That may be a little sick and certainly not too smart, but you've got to respect the swagger and level of commitment. To some degree, that kind of obstinance is bred right into the Aggy culture. That is the same culture that gave Sherminator and Francione the extensions after mediocre seasons, as you mentioned.

Unfortunately for A&M, College Station is a crap hole, "A&M" stands for Agricultural and Mechanical and Aggy is much better known for hating Texas than they are for their own merits and for suffering from disillusionment and obstinance. Those are isues that are very hard to overcome, if even possible.

I'm not sure Aggy's highest and best use isn't being the anti-Texas. There are a lot of Texas haters out there in the world and I think A&M has benefitted by being the anti-Texas destination. Most of their identity and outside reputation is this and I think leaving Texas and losing that identity may prove costly to the Aggy program.

I am a die-hard Orangeblood for generations, but I never liked it when A&M sucked. (I always did like it when OU sucked, however.) The world is a better place when Texas and A&M play competitive football games. (There's not too many Aggys that would say that.) I hated to see A&M leave for the SEC and I think it is once again, a result of their obstinance and refusal to admit who they are.

You seem quite rational, must just be a fan and couldn't have actually gone to school there. Better keep your moniker private because most of the Aggys I know would fire-bomb your house if they read your above comments.

Aggy moving helps them? Uh, okay, but it helps us, too. In no particular order, we don't have to
have them bring their nonsense to Austin, march up Congress, acting like they really count, have
their tin-man band play, incessantly, while it is overdue for us to sing The Eyes, embarrass our
state and try to identify with UT (see their endzone paint), make America think that they somehow
represent Texas, on and on. I am GLAD they are moving. Now, if we can find a way to keep them
away from small children.......

Some thoughts of my own, directed at Prop Joe as the most rational and logical ag fan that posts here.

If your favorite school had a lot more fans like you, UT and A&M could enjoy a very healthy rivalry, with neither team seeking a divorce from the other. The trouble is, at least on this board, you, Prop Joe, stick out like a sore thumb from most ag fans who come over here primarily to stir things up.

So much venom has been directed UT's way from A&M fans, players, and administration that indeed a lot of us who love the Longhorns aren't going to miss the ags, and aren't prone to wish them well in the SEC.

I'm pretty sure that a decade or two down the road, when the divorce is more in the rear view mirror, the two teams may play again. UT has sporadically played arkey since they bolted to the SEC. However, the hatred, the rhetoric, is going to have to die down and for a long time before UT will entertain starting the series up again.

Don't think this is all one-sided. I understand that agricultural has taken its' share of grief from UT people over the years. That's the nature of an instate rivalry. However, the rivalry turned very ugly in the last decade and a half, turned into more of a jihad on A&M's part, and to me at least, that means it's time to get some distance between the two schools.

I'm not sure any fans of either school know the real reasons for the ags bolt to the SEC. I'm sure there's at least some truth to all of the reasons put out there. I actually agree with those whose position is that its' a good thing for A&M to try to make their own name in the SEC. I don't think they'll have long term success, but I admire them for trying. They were likely to be not much more than middle of the road in the Big XII.

This is probably the most, and last I will seriously have to say about the ags. They're not in the Big XII, UT won't play them, except possibly in a bowl game, and I think its' time for fans of both schools to move on to those schools that are relevant to them. I personally find the views of rational fans of any school interesting and welcome here, and hope those fans will keep on visiting.

I agree with you Prop joe. Especially where you state that if okie state can go to the rose bowl, there are no excuses for atm.
And if leach could bring 10 and 11 win seasons to the crap hole that is lubbock, then why in the hell hasn't atm found the coach to do it for them?

atm does have a rabid and large fan base that sells out a large stadium. and has for years. not so at okie state or ttu. selling out an 85k stadum, as atm does, is a bigger deal than selling out the 45k and 55k stadiums in lubbock and stillwater.

for that matter, look at tcu. they have a small fan base, and a smallish (45k) stadium yet they won the rose bowl.

I give you credit joe for calling your school to task for having such low standards and settling for less than they should.

i dont disagree with any of your points, except for the comments about college station. i'm certainly biased--i have two degrees from A&M and i live here, but CS isnt as bad as most make it out to be. it's a normal college town. sure we have our crappy parts, but what town doesnt? i look at the town as a good, safe, small community with good schools. it's actually a very pleasant place to live.

and if you think CS is a craphole, have you ever been to stillwater? my god, that place makes CS look like a booming metropolis. CS really aint the problem.

i've said this before, and i'll say it again, i think it's a blessing in disguise that the rivalry is taking a hiatus because it allows for A&M to reevaluate its priorities as a football program. no longer can we be content with going 6-6 but having that redemptive superbowl of a game against the hated sips that we can save our season with. pardon my french, but **** that man. a .500 season is a ****** year regardless of who we beat, the horns included, at least in my book.

A&M has an ego that we dont deserve. recruits dont care about how jackie won the SWC in the 80s. hell half of them werent even born. but our brass relies on that as our benchmark and thinks that we can sell based on that success. we cant. to bring it back to the original post title, that's why i'm pleased that sumlin put together a staff of solid recruiters. we need guys who can sell the product we're trying to put out. we HAVE to prioritize recruiting in a way that we havent done ever.

there is absolutely no excuse for our poor on field perfomance over the past 10-12 years. we have no one else to blame but ourselves.

Great post Joe. I feel guilty posting this one because your's was a great final statement, but I wanted to compliment it and to tell you that I don't hate CS as a place to live. I fact, I live in a town that is not all that different and I love it. However, I would have absolutely hated it when I was 18 years old and thought I was a future NFL Hall of Famer. I also don't think I would have been too excited to stay there had I been 32 as a young and upcoming coach with some new found success and an ESPN hype machine touting my future prospects. But I certainly didn't mean to disparage the town as a place to grow up or raise a family, etc. Well, except for the _____hole university and that terrible mutilation of the color red.

Joe the problem is that your president sold you guys out. He believes that since you are Aggies you will trust him. I do not mind you University wants to make a name for itself. Good luck but do not expect Texas to play you in any sport. I wish you good luck and sad that your president made that choice.

You're preaching to the choir with Prop Joe talking about Bowtie...remember that Joe's one of the few rational and non-confrontational ags that visits this site.

Prop Joe, have to disagree. I do business with an aggy institution, although I am UT
through and through. Whenever I go to aggyland to play golf with my aggy associates
I am routinely -- ALWAYS -- harassed by the rednecks. Sneers, bad looks, etc. They
remind me of Deliverance.

Prop, I also have to agree to disagree with you...I lived in collie station for a year, and the group think in that place pervaded everything. There was this "You're either with us or against us" mindset, and I actually had some people refuse to do business with me when they found out I'm a Horn fan. That was some years ago, but even then, I thought that was extreme. I've lived close to Oklahoma too, but I've never gotten that kind of attitude from paper clip fans.

i'm surprised by that. i dont know why anyone would let college affiliation impact who they do business with. that just seems dumb.

and to add a caveat, i've never been a UT fan living in college station, so i cant speak accurately to what the experience is like (should have shared that earlier). but at least from my end my inlaws are all horn fans, and i've yet to see them get any flack for wearing burnt orange around town.

i've received my fair share of looks/sneers/under breath comments while wearing A&M stuff at dick's sporting goods in pflugerville or around georgetown...i just figured that every fanbase has it's share of ******** who give the rest of us a bad name.
