The best actor still working. Period. If you disagree, go watch Shawshank. Seriously. Has there been anyone better over the last 25 years??

he's up there. i've always like robert duvall a lot. how many people could play both tom hagen and gus macrae perfectly?

I would submit as a contender: Sean Connery.

He can make (at least the scenes he's in) even Highlander II watchable.

Connery, like Cosner, has one character... himself. The good news is that character is supremely badass.

Tim Robbins was pretty damn good in that movie as well.

Morgan Freeman is a great actor and he is definitely in my top 10 probably top 5.

Robert Duvall is way up there as well. I know Godfather was early in his career but I didn't see until a couple of years ago. After I saw that he easily became one of my favorites.

Deniro is way up there as well.

In addition to Yo La Do's list, I'd add Billy Bob Thornton and Daniel Day Lewis.

Ian McShane might be up there just for the sheer genius of Al Swearingen.

since Paul Newman is no longer on this earth, I'm willing to say that Morgan Freeman is firmly in my top spot. I'm a bit partial since Shawshank is my favorite movie and has been since release. Daniel Day Lewis' role in TWBB recently took over my top acting role, but Freeman has a number of excellent roles he's played-Glory, Driving Miss Daisy, Gone Baby Gone, Million Dollar Baby, Se7en.

Robert Duval, DeNiro, Pacino duke it out for their top 5 spots imo.

It's amazing that many (including myself) consider The Shawshank Redemption the best film ever made, but it didn't even win the Oscar for best picture. It just had the misfortune of being released the same year as Forrest Gump, which I thought was a good film, but not on the level of Shawshank.

In regards to Freeman, he is one of my favorites. The ending of Shawshank where he makes it to the beach in Mexico to meet Andy is also one of my favorite scenes in any movie. To finally make it after all both of them had been through was uphauling.

I see Shawshank as awesome. The best friendship movie I've ever seen.

"I guess I just miss my friend." It gets me every time.

Forrest Gump was a very enjoyable film that everyone can appreciate. But Shawshank reaches into my soul.

shawshank is one of those movies if you see it in the guide, you have to at least see where they are in the movie, which usually turns into watching the movie. the last 15 minutes or so are the best in film

You have to take points away from him for that crappy movie he made with Keanu Reeves where they had found a way to make energy out of water. I guess everyone is entitled to one dud....

I agree on Freeman and Duvall. They, along with Tom Hanks, are my personal triumvirate of acting greatness in the past 25 years.

What's particularly amazing about Freeman and Duvall is how much they bring to lesser known, supporting roles. See, e.g., Freeman in An Unfinished Life and Duvall as Robert E. Lee in Gods and Generals.

Gravitas:

Freeman
Tommy Lee Jones
Pacino
Deniro (when not in something stupid)
Denzel Washington (when not in something stupid)
Clooney
Duval

Acting:

Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Sean Penn
Daniel Day Lewis (who also has real gravitas)
Downey Jr

Likeable:

Mark Ruffalo
Sam Jackson (when he is not in something wholly awful)
Don Cheadle

Surprised by your Hanks comments. I agree that he is a little over exposed now, but the guy is a fantastic actor.

He is very very diverse, From Gump to Philadelphia to Saving Private Ryan to Road to Perdition to Castaway. Not all great films but Hanks was solid. He does too many cheezy roles though.

Agree completely about Freeman and Duval.

One guy that i really used to like that I just can not stand anymore is Pacino.
