Moon Landing

2009 marked the 40th anniversary of the Moon Landing. I would like to take a pole: Who believes that we actually landed on the moon, and who believes that the report and video was fake?

Real.

(Isn't true that with a powerful telescope, one can see the landing craft that was left behind? Or am I making that up?)

Has to be real. A conspiracy of that magnitude would just be impossible to pull off. With as many people that would need to be involved, SOMEONE would talk at some point.

It's true that reflectors were left at the landing site, and with a very precisely pointed laser, you can get a reflection off the moon.

Mythbusters dedicated an entire episode (a good one) to moon conspiracy myths. All busted. We landed on the moon.

Seeing the technology we have now in the public sector let alone in the military how is there any doubt.

I'm sure there are some things that conspiracy theorists have sound footing with. This not being one of them.

My fahter was in mission control at the time. If it is fake, he was part of the conspiracy.

As mentioned already, the laser mirror reflectors left behind by the Apollo astronauts are (still) used today to measure the distance between the earth and moon. Would be awful hard for a laser to bounce off moon dust and make it back to earth.

Lunar mirrors

My cousin was in Mission Control room the night of the first moon landing. He worked for IBM at the time, writing programs for emergency situations, like what would happen if there were an earthquake on the moon during the time the astronauts were there.
I lived in Galveston during the early days of the space program, and Chevrolet gave them all the original astronauts a new Corvette. We would see them cruising around once in awhile. One of their daughters came to a party on the beach one time, it was like a movie star showing up.
I'm rambling, but anyone even asking this question has no grip on reality. Why do people believe such stupid stuff?
I know the answer, but it still always makes me shake my head.

Does anyone really think the US govt could carry off a hoax like this? Don't you think the USSR would have jumped on it?

The people who think the moon landing was faked aren't all "stupid". What makes this interesting is why they think this. What causes them to engage in such non-rational thinking? People do this all the time (non-rational beliefs and such) but some seem to step out a little bit beyond the norm.

Personally I believe it is real.

But I did know a kid in high school who's dad was a senior propulsion engineerfor 30 years with USAF and worked on several high level r&d projects, one being the SR-71. He also spent 10 years with Lockheed working on Venture Star.

He asserted it was a hoax and that he was sworn to secrecy all his professional life. It was troubling to hear. He was sort of a nut though, the mad scientist type. He was always pulling **** apart and putting it back together just because he could. I think he had a bad case of burnout.

People believe the conspiracy theories because they are anti-government or establishment to the point they are willing to accept bizarre nontruths as fact. Minority populations are especially succeptable to this because they were lied to by the government so many times, like the tragic experiments done to members of their race (Tuskegee, I believe ?).
You have anti-government zealots spreading misinformation to further their pet causes or theories, or religions, or for personal gain, or because some of them are mentally ill.
I can see a few people being that way, but there are significant percentages of people who believe this stuff. That gets depressing to consider.

There will always be a certain % of the population who think its cool to be anti-establishment and contrarian. Whatever the official version is, they want to be on the opposite side.

The real question is - who are the bigger nutjobs? Those who think the moon landing is fake or those who dont believe a plane crashed into the Pentagon? Thousands believe that a ******* missile was fired into the Pentagon in broad daylight and that all of the eyewitnesses just imagined seeing a plane fly into it!

I would contend that the two are beliefs held by the same group of people, for the same reasons. I doubt there are many who believe one and not the other, RCdidn'toffer.
