*Jordan Danks: Should be a top 2 round pick so he's most likely gone.
*Kyle Russell: Report said he turned down $800,000 last year to return to the Horns; sure was swinging a hot bat down the stretch; should be a top 4 round pick but will get a lot less than $800,000 this year; hes most likely gone.
*Big Bird: 6-foot-10 pitchers that throw 90+ are always hot pro prospects; should be a top 6 round draft and will probably sign.
*Kyle Walker: surprise high draft for the Horns; should be top 10 round pick despite bad season; most likely wont be back.
*Riley Boening: should be drafted around the 4th-8th rounds; gut feeling says Riley comes back to UT after not being fully healthy this season.
*Preston Clark: tough year for Clark; might fall in draft depending on extent of injury; was originally supposed to be a top 3 round draft in 08 but tough spring makes him a much later draft; will be 23 in August so almost has to sign, but gut feeling says he comes back. I think Preston is the guy we need to come back.
*Austin Wood: should be a decent draft (rounds 10-20); will probably sign pro.
*Casey Whitmer: was considered a big draft prospect coming into season; will be a later draft (rounds 10-20) so will probably return to UT
ok, i know walker has filthy stuff, but the numbers just aren't there, never have been really. what scouting reports are you reading on him that make you feel he's a top 10 round guy?
1st - Tampa Bay selects Tim Beckham SS Griffin HS (GA)
2nd - Pittsburgh selects Pedro Alvarez 3B Vanderbilt
3rd - Kansas City selects Eric Hosmer 1B American Heritage HS (FL)
4th - Baltimore selects Brian Matusz P San Diego
5th - San Francisco selects Buster Posey C Florida State
i've seen that kid Cashner chunk for TCU. he was lighting up 97mph and it looks effortless. his slider has great action but can be erratic and not sure about his other pitches because he never needed them in the MWC.
Hitting Ability: A little heavy on his front side, he can be vulnerable to the changeup; sometimes Castro tries too hard to be the guy in the lineup. He does have the ability to drive the ball from the left side of the plate.
Power: He's got average power now with the chance to be plus down the road. He's got opposite-field power with good loft and backspin.
Running Speed: He's got more speed than most catchers.
Base running: He does have the ability to take the extra base or even steal a bag or two.
Arm Strength: He's an got average arm, but keeps improving his pop times to second base.
Fielding: He's worked hard on his craft and does a terrific job framing the ball.
Range: He's good at blocking pitches in the dirt.
Physical Description: Castro is a tall, well-proportioned backstop with a long body.
Medical Update: Healthy now, but an arm issue over the summer kept him from catching regularly.
Strengths: With legitimate power, some hittability and an improving set of defensive skills, he's got the chance to be a good all-around catcher.
Weaknesses: He has trouble with offspeed stuff.
Summary: College catchers, especially those who hit left-handed, are always in demand, and Castro has used a strong Cape League season to put himself in position to be one of the first backstops taken. He's got legit power and a good set of defensive skills. He might not be the first college catcher to go off the board, but he likely won't have to wait long.
