Misotheism

So what is the point of being a Misotheist? Is there a way to win this battle? Is there a way to prove God wrong? I get that it is possible to believe a god exists and to be angry at what happens in the world, but to be satisfied with that state? It is hopeless. I am not saying a person should lie to themselves. Still, I don't think they have to.

I hit my scroll button too fast and I swear it said 'Methodist" when it moves really fast.

As a frosh in college I wrote an essay for English that basically treated the fall of man from Eden as an even that indicated mankind had become dissatisfied with God hiding knowledge of world from them. Once God moved to punish Adam and Eve they turned their backs on him, angry with him.

It wasn't particularly clever.

I think misotheism sounds funny. Like people being angry with the weather.

Well, according to the Genesis account man rebelled against a God who gave them a pretty cushy life and frequently spent time with them "face-to-face". So I don't place blame on God.

Coelacanth, what does logic have to do with your arbitrary distinction between a creator's intellect and moral regard for its creation? Non sequitur.

The actual incongruity implied in the question is that of a creator who (1) claims profound love and concern, and (2) fails to demonstrate it.

Dion, how does seeking and saving people who have rebelled against and defied you imply not caring for them?

Plus, suffering isn't something that God just allows to happen to people. Suffering and death are the results of sin which each of us have committed against God.

Even though God allows suffering, for those who believe, God described the situation like this in 2 Corinthians 4.

GT_WT, according to the Bible God does not punish us for the rebellion of Eve.

First, Eve is not described as the one responsible in the Bible. Adam is. Second, when Adam sinned (and Eve) they both fell. Their bodies and souls underwent a change. From innocent to guilty. Their nature changed from one of an obedient child to one of an enemy. When they had children, they were completely sinners by nature therefore their children were sinners too. See the story of Cain and Abel. God doesn't not punish children for the sins of their parents. He punishes each person for their own sin. So your statement does not describe the God of the Bible.

GTWT, So you don't want to talk about Annie Darwin anymore?

I know some Christians you talk to haven't read the Bible. However, I am familiar with the quotation you use. God is hard on men too, so you left one group out. It is no news that God judges sinners, all of us. When we look at people we don't see their sin as that bad. However, we are sinners ourselves so we are not as sensitive to it as God is. We can criticize the harshness of God towards sinners but again if we were free from sin and its deception we wouldn't have those criticisms.

Monohorns, since when does genocide characterize a loving God?

To get back to the subject of the thread - why is God worthy of worship? According to the Bible He is a mean, murderous, jealous god. Is the only reason to worship this entity the promise He makes to save you from death and damnation if you do? That seems rather cowardly.

So for those questioning why God would allow pain, would the whole idea of a loving God make more sense to you if He made it so everyone was happy all the time?

Where exactly should He draw the line, then?

And am I not a loving parent because I had kids, knowing that there is pain here on earth? Afterall, I chose to have kids, knowing that they would sometimes experience pain - maybe even feel tortured at times.

So GT_WT are you saying that you get to decide how much suffering is okay but then how much is too much for God to allow? Or any other human for that matter? That doesn't sound right.

Yes, I realize that in the Old Testament, God commands Israel to destroy whole nations. I am also aware that in Revelation we see Jesus Christ destroying those who rebel against Him directly.

Genocide, i.e. mass killing is never a pleasant thing. I don't think it is to God either. 2 Peter 3:9 says God is "not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance". There is genuine compassion that God has, even for those who hate him. However, God is not simply a loving God. He is also just, meaning requiring justice for every wrong committed. So God as holy and righteous has the right to judge sinners as the creator. Sometimes that means many people being killed at once, as ugly as that is. What are His motivations though? Greed? Impatience? General mercilessness? Whimsy? No, God's judgment is always motivated by His sense of justice and requirement for all wrongs to be punished.

I think if you are honest you will admit that is exactly how you would want God to be. Otherwise there is no justice, there is no recourse for the poor and the weak. There is no hope really for any of us. If God is not just, then there is no real protection for any of us down here on earth. With God judging sin, even if we suffer and die, there is pay back for our aggressors. They are not free to trample over innocents, in order to gather more money and power for themselves.

Ultimately, we see God's compassion made evident in Jesus Christ. In Jesus, God is not only the one giving out the punishment. He is also the one receiving all of God's righteous judgment. Jesus Christ on the cross fulfills God's requirement of righteousness. Any punishment we deserve, the same kind of pain experienced by those He Himself killed, has been felt by Jesus Christ. He knows how furious God's wrath is because it was all poured out on Him. Even with the pain I experience on this earth. I know that I escape much more because of what Jesus did. That's compassion. And he gives me way more glory and joy in return than any pain I had to experience. Like I said before, it is a wise trade.

I can worship God first because He created the universe. His power and intellect are worthy of worship. I can worship God because He does not allow evil to go unpunished. When it is all said and done there is no injustice. I can also worship God because He experienced all of His own punishment on my behalf. The sacrifice of Himself on the cross for the benefit of the world is very worthy of worship. He is the only God that can truly be described as just and the justifier.
