Minnesota vs. Texas Game 1

Pimp Daddy
The second weekend series finds an old non-conference foe coming back the Disch. It's the Minnesota Golden Gophers who used to spend a lot of spring breaks in Texas with a stop always in Austin back in the 70's and into the 80's. Dave Winfield was quite a player during his college days as a Gopher in the 70's. That ended for awhile when the Minnesota head coach decided that the umps were the reason they were losing all those game Texas.

Minnesota thought better later and started coming back to Austin for game and tonight starts a four game set with Texas after losing three games to UH in Houston.

So I go looking for the Texas lineup and be back with that and the game thread soon.

The Texas starting lineup is this:

Johnson-LF
Shaw-RF
Hinojosa-SS
Marlow-2B
Barrera-1B
Boswell-3b
McCann-DH
Cantu-C
Gurwitz-CF
French RHP

The Minnesota lineup goes this way:
Dan Motl-CF
Connor Schaefbauer-2B
Matt Fieldler-DH
Toby Hanson-1B
Michael Handel-SS
Jordan Smith-LF
Tony Skjefte-3B
Matt Halloran-C
Alex Boxwell-RF
Ben Meyer-P

Parker French gets his second start of the still young season tonight against the Gophers of the Golden variety. He had a good outing in Houston last Friday against Rice. Maybe he can stretch things out a bit more tonight and go longer than the four innings he pitched against the Owls.

The weather is warmer than last Tuesday at 69 degrees with a pretty strong wind from the south that means it's blowing out to left and with the new baseball there should be good carry to ball's hit in that direction.

French toes the rubber and Dan Motl, playing center field steps in the right handed batter's box.
French needs his sinker working in this wind and the first pitch is a one hop ball to third and the 5-3 play is one down.

Connor Schaefbauer is at second and bats lefty up next. A ground ball to short and Hinojosa charges and makes the across the body throw for two away.

Matt Fieldler is the DH batting right handed and he grounds one toward the hole on the left side and Boswell dives and has it and an accurate throw retires the side on the nice play.

Three ground balls for the sinker ball pitcher retires the side in order.

Texas up for their first hacks.

Augie was asked during pregame if he has noticed anything about the new ball this year. He said that if a strong batter hits it square, it will go further. Therefore, a few more homeruns will happen. Ball goes though the infield faster also . But you still have to hit it square. Tres' last homer would not have been one last year.

Ben Meyer a rather tall right hander at 6' 6'' is on the mound for Minnesota.

Johnson leads off against him for Texas.
He lines one to right and the right fielder dives and doesn't make the play and it's to the wall.
Johnson is off to races and with no outs he is held at third with a triple.

Shaw bats from the left side with a man at third in Johnson.
With the infield back a ground ball to second is a rbi as Johnson scores and is one down.

Texas leads 1-0.

The bases clean and one down for Hinojosa.
The righty at the plate and he lines a shot just over the lanky Meyer for a single to center.

Marlow, the Texas clean up man bats lefty with one down and one on.
He lifts a foul pop on the left side and third baseman makes the over the shoulder catch for two away.

Barrera, again at first, bats with one on and two gone.
Hinojosa takes off and he easily steals second.
Barrera now has a runner in scoring position.
The count runs full and and another liner up the middle drops in center and Hinojosa scores as the throw was cut off for some reason.

Texas leads 2-0.

Boswell up from the left side with two away and Barrera at first.
He K's swinging on a slow change to retire the side.

Texas puts up a crooked number in their first at bat and lead 2-0 after an inning.

French out for the second inning on the mound for Texas.

He faces Toby Hanson, the Minnesota first baseman, leading off from the left side.
He lines a single up the middle for the first hit for the Golden Gophers.

Michael Handel, the shortstop, bats right handed with one on.
A fly ball to center is one down.

Jordan Smith, up from the left side and the runner goes and a comebacker goes 1-3 for two away as the runner moves to second.

Tony Skjefte, the third baseman grounds to short and the play is made by Hinojosa to retire the side.

Bottom of two up next and Texas ahead 2-0

The senior Meyer comes out for his second inning of work after being touched for two runs in the first.

McCann leads off for Texas from the left side. He seems to be settling in as the DH against lefties.
The freshman works the count full and grounds a single through the box into center.

Another freshman, in Cantu bats righty with one on.
He walks on four pitches to put two on.

Gurwitz is up in the nine hole and looks to bunt no doubt. Maybe he takes a strike first.
He does just that and now looks to lay it down.
He does his job and the 1-3 sac puts the runners in scoring position.

Johnson back at the top of the order and wielding a hot bat stands in.
With one down the infield stays back again.
A very wild pitch goes to the screen and scores a run.

Texas leads 3-0.

Johnson back in with a runner now at third and one down.
A shallow fly ball off the end of the bat is not deep enough to plate the run.

Two down for Shaw and one on and a blast to left with the wind goes over the left fielder's head and off the wall and Shaw slides into third with an rbi triple.

Texas leads 4-0.

Hinjosa up again after a single his first trip, with a runner at third and two down.
A ground ball to short goes 6-3 to end the inning.

The Horns put up two more and lead now 4-0 after two played.

French with some runs to work with looks to keep the sinker working in the Minnesota third.

Matt Halloran, the catcher, leads off for the Golden Gophers.
He bats from the left side and yet another ground ball, this time to second goes 4-3 for the first out.

Alex Boxwell, in right field hits a one hopper of French, he picks it up and goes to first for two down.

Motl back up at the top of the order and he swing at one in the dirt and after the 2-3 put out the K is recorded to retire the side.

French with another perfect inning and Texas leads 4-0 to the bottom of the third.

Myer still works for Minnesota as the Texas half of the inning starts.

Marlow leads off for the Horns stands in left handed and shoots a line drive single on two hops to right.

Barrera up once more with one on.
He shows no intention of bunting and flies one to right for one away.

Boswell up with one down and one on.
He fists a fly that carries out to center for two away.

McCann up again as the DH bats with two away and one on.
A catcher by trade, he hasn't been behind the plate yet.
He K's swinging to end the inning.

Texas in the lead 4-0 after three.

French continues on hill for the Horns as the fourth inning begins.

Schaefbauer leads off for Minnesota.
The lefty hitter gaps one to left center for a lead double.

Fieldler, the DH bats with one on.
A little roller to second moves the runner to third with one down.

Hanson, a lefty hits with one down and a man on third.
A passed ball on Cantu scores the first Minnesota run

Texas leads 4-1.

Hanson walks to put one on.

Handel up with one on grounds to short and the 6-4-3 twin killer ends the frame.

Minnesota gets on the board, but Texas leads 4-1 to the bottom of four.

Meyer work the fourth for the Golden Gophers.

Cantu leads off the Texas fourth and again he walks on four pitches.

Gurwitz at the bottom of the order may be up to bunt once more.
He doesn't and flies out to left for one down.

Johnson brings up the top of the Horn order once more.
He sends a shallow fly ball to center that the shortstop backs on and squeezes it for two down.

Shaw up hoped to extend the inning, but doesn't on a 6-3 ground ball out to retire the Horns.

Texas goes down scoreless and leads 4-1 after four.

French comes out in the fifth and hopes to qualify for the win.

Smith leads off for Minnesota and the lefty hitter with yet another ground ball, this one to short is retired for one away.

Skjefte grounds one off the glove of Boswell and down the line in left and Johnson's throw is just late and it a double.

Halloran from the left side sends a high fly to right and the wind knocks it straight down for Shaw and two down.

Boxwell up from the left side and one on and two down.
A wild pitch sends the runner to third.
The count runs full and he walks to put two on.

Runners on the corners and two down for the lead off hitter Motl.
The right hander in the box is suddenly the potential tying run.
Two more balls, as French has lost some command and out comes Skip.
He returns to the third base dugout and Parker tries to get out of the jam.
A ground ball toward the hole to short and Hinojosa backhands and guns the throw to first 6-3 to retire the side and get French and Horns out of the inning unscathed.

French does become eligible for the win and halfway through the first game of the series Texas leads 4-1.

Meyer, who has settled down since the first two innings is back for the Texas fifth.

Hinojosa leads off for Texas.
He pops up to the right side of the mound and the first baseman staggers and drops it as it rolls into foul territory on the right side. That is an error and it brings out the pitching coach and he brings a hook for Meyer.

Pitching change.

The new Minnesota pitcher is Toby Anderson, another tall right hander at 6'5".

Marlow with one on is his batter to face.
Marlow has not squared and draws a walk to put two on.

Barrera up with two on.
He does square and fouls it off. Now he doesn't show bunt and four pitches later is walked to load the bases.
This ump has had a small zone all night both ways.

Boswell bats with a chance to bust the game wide open and he drives a ball against the wind to right and it still goes over the right fielders outstretched glove as he kind of lost it in the wind it seems. It one hops over the right field fence for a ground rule double as two runs score.

Texas leads 6-1.

McCann up and he K's swinging again for one away.

Cantu up with two on and needs some contact to score some more.
He inside outs a swing and it's a liner to right in front of the right fielder and it's a two run rbi single.

Texas leads 8-1.

Gurwitz needs a hit as he stands in the only hitless Horn tonight.
He has one on and still one down and he K's looking for two away.

I need to petition for a backwards K emoticon, how about it Dion, give a guy a solid for his game thread. :smile1:

Johnson up with two down and retires the side with a fly ball to right.

Texas most likely has put this game out of reach as they lead 8-1 after five played.

French is back out again and it's a little surprising after he struggled the last inning.

Schaefbauer up and French gets him on a 6-3 ground ball.

Fieldler up from the right side with one down.
The straight change is taken for a K for two down, still need that emoticon.

Hanson bats with two down and a ground ball to the hole and C.J. gets to it and sets and fires a laser to first to retire the side in order.

Great inning for French and most likely his last as Texas leads 8-1 to the bottom of the sixth.

Anderson returns for Minnesota on the hill in the Texas sixth.

Shaw leads off from the left side and grounds one just fair down the right field line and it's a stand up double.

Hinojosa up with a man son second.
He lunges at a ball way outside and K's swinging for one down.

Marlow up with one down and one on.
A pitch under his hands is squibbed back to the mound for a 1-3 second out as Shaw goes to third.

Barrera up with Shaw at third and two down.
The count runs full and it's hammered on a line to the track in left and the left fielder makes a sliding catch to save a run and retire the side.

Six played and Texas leads 8-1.

I listen to the games on the radio (love Craig Way) all the time yet still follow NB's threads. They are excellent and a part of the game day experience for surely more than just myself. Thanks, NB, for what you do consistently to enhance our enjoyment of Baseball season.

As expected French is done for the night and the new Texas pitcher is left hander Jon Malmin.

He faces righty hitter Handel leading off for the Golden Gophers.
A curve bends in on the outside corner for a K watching for one down. Emoticon needed.

Smith from the left side bats with one down.
Another bender is cut on and missed for two away.

Skjefte bats from the right side with two down.
A ground ball goes 4-3 to retire the side in order.

Malmin with a perfect first inning and they stretch at the Disch as Texas is still in command 8-1.

Anderson still toils on for Minnesota on the mound in the Texas seventh.

Boswell leads off and sends one through the hole on the right side for a single.

The freshman DH McCann bats righty with one aboard.
A ground ball to third goes for a 5-4 force and McCann reaches on out one.

Cantu with another appearance at the plate with one on and one down.
He gets into one that is driven over the center fielder's head and one hops the wall.
It's a double and McCann stops at third.

The struggling Gurwitz looks to break out and get a run or more home.
He hits a scream on a hop to first and he is still snake bit as the runners have to hold on the 3U put out.

Two down for lead off hitter Johnson at the top of the order.
Still two in scoring position for Ben and he a fast ball rides in and hits Johnson and it's ruled he swung at the pitch and he did so that's a K and it retires the side.

Seven gone in Austin and Texas leads 8-1.

Malmin looks to keep his slate perfect as the Minnesota eighth commences.

Austin Athmann, who came in to catch last inning leads off from the right side.
He ground the first pitch on a hop to Boswell for one down.

Boxwell in the nine hole bats righty with one away.
Another big breaker and another K swinging for two gone.

Lead off hitter Motl up and another grounder to Boswell and the 5-3 out retires the side in order again.

Malmin is dealing and Minnesota is reeling as the Horns lead 8-1 to the bottom of eight.

Anderson keeps working on the mound for the Golden Gophers.

Shaw from the left side has had a good night with a double and a triple stands in.
Shaw again goes the opposite way and it one hops the wall in left field for his second double and third extra base knock of the game.

Hinojosa up with one on.
A ground ball up the middle is handled by the shortstop and Shaw goes to third on the 6-3 out one.

Marlow up with Shaw on third with one down.
Another ground ball up the middle gets through the drawn in infield and it's a rbi single.

Texas leads 9-1.

That's all for Anderson as the pitching coach arrives at the mound.

Pitching change.

Horns looking good tonight. Here's to continuing this good hitting thru the weekend. And of course, thanks NB for your narratives. Makes the games even better.

Cody Campbell is the latest Minnesota hurler and another tall right hander.

He faces Barrera with one on and one down.
Another liner to left for Tres that goes to the track, but it's also tracked down by the left fielder for two away.

Boswell bats from the left side with two down and one on.
He slaps a single up the middle for single.

Freshman Joe Baker pinch hits from the right side and is plunked by a pitch to load the bases.

Cantu bats with two down and the bases loaded.
He lines a ball to the gap in left center and that will clear the bases.
It's a three run double.

Texas leads 12-1

Gurwitz up and tries one last time to join the hit parader.
He does as a ground ball goes past a diving third baseman and down the left field line for back to back doubles.
It plates another run.

13-1 the Horns way.

Johnson up yet again with two down and one on.
He grounds a single up the middle and they hold Gurwitz because they are good people.

So Shaw up once more with his multiple extra base hits.
Shaw gets rung up because it's time to go home and that retires the side.

Texas pads the lead and looks to stick a fork in this one, it's all Horns 13-1 to the ninth.

Malmin looks to remain perfect and finish this one off in the ninth.

Schaefbauer leads off from the left side for Minnesota.
His curve is not hitable for the Golden Gophers it seems and yet another swinging K is one down.

Fieldler up and he breaks up Malmin's perfect outing with a squibber that can't be played by Boswell and it's an infield hit.

Tyler Hanson pinch hits from the right side and flies out to right for two down.

Handel bats with two down and one on and a fly ball goes to right and Shaw goes back and drops it and a run scores and it's an error on Shaw.

Texas leads 13-2.

The three base error puts a man on third and two down for Troy Traxler, pinch hitting from the right side.
A soft liner to center is hauled in by Gurwitz to end the game.

Texas wins 13-2 and let's listen to what Augie has to say about it and let me rest my fingers a bit and then wrap this one up.

French has another good outing and Malmin comes in and also looks good. The only two runs scored by Minnesota were by a passed ball and an error. The bullpen is intact for the double dip tomorrow.

For the second game in a row the Horns put up double digit runs and many players have multiple hits. It's the perfect formula for another rout by Texas this week.

Tomorrow for the second consecutive Saturday a double header will be played. It's going to be a long day of baseball again and another tough workout for the fingers and keyboard, so let's all get some rest and be back at 3 pm to get the games started and hope the winning streak is kept going. :hookem2::bevo:

Augie said in post game show that he is encouraging hitters to swing at the ball this early to develop their eye. It is working.
