Million Dollar Coaches

"With the growth of the women's game, the pressures are mounting. Thirty-five years ago, no games were televised, Division I attendance averaged in the hundreds, and coaches' salaries were four figures. This year's Final Four will be the 17th sellout, and ESPN is televising all 63 games of the tournament for the sixth straight year. Summitt, Auriemma and Texas' Gail Goestenkors each make more than $1 million."

Love it... Tampa Tribune didn't include Baylor's Mulkey. :)

That's an omission that lessens the impact of the article as it indicates a lack of research. If an error is made on what is a very important part of the article (million dollar coaches), it makes me wonder where else there may have been insufficient or inadequate research used to draw conclusions.

The focuse of the article is on increasing pressure to cheat due to an increase in financial compensation for coaches. As the game becomes more visible and more like the guys' game, it's very likely that those issues (cheating, drugs, etc.) will become more visible and prevalent.

Good article about a problem we don't usually think about.

I say phooey to the notion that the article is lessened w/o mention of Sulkey Mulkey..............

Who cares what she makes or what she does??

......nobody, that's why she wasn't mentioned.

It wasn't too long ago when the only game that was televised was the championship game. Thank goodness for ESPN, FSN and College Sports TV. I get to see more games on TV than I ever imagined would be possible.

The East Coast was ahead of the rest of the nation when it came to WCBB. When I lived out there in the mid 90's I was amazed at how many games were televised on regional sports channels. Glad the game now has attention at a national level and I hope the audience continues to grow.

You don't think Mulkey is respected nationally? She has won national championships at every level. Just because she is not included in this one article does not mean she is not respected. Every time a major job comes up, she is at the top of the list.

You have a great coach in Gail and she is going to bring Texas back to being a powerhouse. My point is that Kim has done this already and should receive her due praise.

If you do a story on WBB million dollar coaches, a little research is in order. Mulkey's salary was a big story when it happened. It was not that difficult to find if a writer is willing to do more than a superficial story about his/her topic.

At any rate, I have to give Mulkey props for what she has accomplished at Baylor, especially coming in without any prior college headcoaching experience. .

Mulkey knows how to win - as do all the million dollar babies
