Mike Elko leaving A&M for Duke

aggy wondering why elko would leave a program on the verge of winning a national championship to take the head coaching job at duke. Their words not mine. They never cease to amaze me :brickwall:

The problem is that as of now, there’s isn’t much confidence in Kwiatkowski. That can’t be a good thing.

coach K is still on the staff? It's been a week since the season ended, he should have hit I35 the next day with all his furniture in tow. If sark is keeping him, repeat what we saw in 2021. Forget anm, we're the damn clowns

This is a huge loss for A&M. Elko is one helluva DC that built an amazing D for them that was the strength of the program. How does this impact recruiting for them? Some big name/key recruits are likely wondering who’s coming in.

Sark and K are (hopefully) all over this amazing opportunity 1 week out from early signing day.

I don’t blame Elko. Maybe he missed intelligent conversation.
Who needs intelligent conversation when the local women are this hot?

Frankly, I think Elko could have held out another year or two for a better HC offer than Duke. He’ll be bottom half ACC at Duke, year after year after year.

Here's my theory on that. With the $$$ being paid to head coaches now, landing even a mediocre position is like winning the lottery for these guys. Even if they fail, they're still financially set for life. Success as a head coach is just gravy on top which likely allows them to cash another lottery ticket.

The counterpoint is Billy Napier who declined offers from Ole Miss, Auburn, and maybe others over the last year or two, to land at Florida—a place where he could build a big time contender.

Napier was already a head coach. He's now cashed the aforementioned next lottery ticket.

Happy for Elko, I guess. He’s certainly in a better place to live now. But he could have held out for so much better. His name was being mentioned for more than a few of the really good HC jobs that opened up. He’s already on the shortlist. Coaching football at Duke is like coaching football at Vanderbilt, Rice, or Kansas.

Yeah, but one bad season and suddenly his name is MUD (Exhibit A: see one Pete Kwiatcollapski). A bird in the hand, I guess.
