Men's Dress Shoes

I've found Johnston and Murphy makes some pretty damn nice shoes. Can anyone tell me what other company makes good shoes for a reasonable price? Say less than $250/pair?

Also, what type of shoe do you wear? Cap toe? Wing tip? Etc.?

Cole Haun makes a fine shoe IMO. That is the only dress shoes i wear (besides a pair of Polo penny loafers). i own several pairs for different suits, slacks, casual, dressy but not enough for a suit. if you wear darker pants like black and blue i'd go with a black loafer or a black saddle oxford. i have a black leather pair called "joseph" by cole haun and they run for about $175 a pair. very comfortable and very sharp. check Dillards and if you dont see anything you like in the store (sometimes the mens shoe departments suck) they probably have a cole haun catalog and you can look through it and they can order anything you want in any color.

H.S. Trask ... fit like gloves, all generally under $200 a paid, and you can send them back to the factory for a complete recondition and re-sole for $60, and they really come back like new.

For more casual business, I'm with the original poster, J&M casuals.

Are the Johnston and Murphy's too much or are you just looking for a different company? Bc if they are too much they do have an outlet store in San Marcos with a decent selection. Also Kenneth Cole has a lot of shoes down there too.

ill also second the motion on the Trask's - great shoes, some are as comfortable as Rockports. No complaints. i'll also second Luchesse - nothing beats a pair of ostrich skin.

If you go the right day, you can find genuine J&Ms, Cole Haans, etc., at the RIGHT price at DSW Shoe Warehouse.

I ahve found Tod's and the bench crafted Polo cap toe shoes to be great. I have very sensitive feet so I am very particlular abot my shoes. I think both of these generally run more that the stated price, but I have also found they last a long, long time.

I've have a pair of J&M that have lasted quite a while. Has anyone ever sent them back the factory to be refurbished? Were you happy with the job they did? Was it worth the money, or did you wish you had just bought a new pair?

I love my J&M collection of shoes. I have several formal and casual pairs. I have been happy with them thus far, and they are the only shoes I wear. Especially when I find them on sale somewhere.

As a former shoe salesman (6yrs, Dillards in Highland Mall), I can tell you that I think Bally's are one of the best shoes around. Also, I like J&M just fine, very good shoes. I am not as big of fan of Cole Haan or Polo, but they are good too, especially their dressier (business) shoes. Their casual line (loafers and such) look and feel good, but lose their shape easily and don't really last, especially Cole Haans. Another favorite of mine is Allen Edmonds. The leathers are almost as nice as Bally, but the look is more American and less European.

Other shoes you should consider if you can find a deal on them: Bruno Maglis and Ferragamo

damn i want some nice shoes like those maybe tomorrow i will go buy some i almost bought some mocassins in alaska but alas they were not my size

Tejas, I'm with you. I own several pair or J&M's, have had them refurbished (every 2 years or so). Very worth it. Comes b ack as a brand new shoe taht's already broken in. They're comfortable, the leather molds to your foot, they company stands by teh shoe. The only dress shoes I'll ever buy.

Allen Edmonds are nicer than J&M, but a little more costly, too.

I think Cole Haan's absolutely suck. They look good on the shelf but wear out quickly and aren't durable.

Cole-Haan is shoddy. I flushed $200 down the toilet on that and will never do it again.

Allen-Edmonds will cost you, but if these are dress shoes you should have them for five years, minimum. It is worth the extra money if you can swing it.

A-E at $275 per is twice the value of Cole-Haan at $200.

I have a pair of Hugo Boss shoes that are probably the best I have ever had. I am not sure they make them themselves.

I don't think Cole Haan makes shoddy shoes. I wore 2 pair of split toes for 3 years, and went through about 5 soles on each. I live in NYC and used to walk over 1.5 miles a day in them. I finally retired them b/c these types of split toes are no longer "in" (ie, the front was not square enough any more).

I have a pair of Bruno Magli and Ferragammo, and they are some nice shoes. Kind of pricy, and probably not so practical outside of NYC.

Even with all of these high dollar shoes, I just got a pair of J&M for about $200 and they are the most comfortable shoes that I have worn in 5 years. They look good too.

My Allen Edmonds feel like I'm wearing socks.

I've had a pair of black wingtips for 7 years and just sent them back last year for the reconditioning.

I've got a pair of brown caps that I may send back in a year or so.

Regardless, once these wear out, I'm going to get more Allen Edmonds.

Larry's Shoes is the place.

Johnson & Murphy are fine but if you are spending that kind of money try Church or Alden. Don't know if you can buy them in Texas but I would never buy another pair of cole haan, johnston&murph, allen edmonds etc. after wearing these
