I remember the hot tips the hotel and motel employees always had.
I also remember when a bunch of us Texas fans went there and there was a horse named "Gone To Texas" and we met the owner who was from Texas and he said we could all go out on the track with him if the horse won.
So we all put our money on that horse and I think he went off as the favorite. I remembered that one of the hotel people had said that he had a tip on a horse called "Here Comes Irish" but I didn't know what race he was in.
So after I placed my bet and we went down to the rail to watch the race I thought about that and looked in the program and sure enough "Here Comes Irish" was in this race. So the race starts and "Gone to Texas" was out fast and he led all the way to the back stretch and the horse in the rear went wide and started flying down the stretch and the P.A. guy started screaming and here comes "Here Comes Irish" and he passed "Gone To Texas" like he had "gone to reverse".
No post race glory for us Texas fans in the Winners Circle and a lot of lost coin to boot. I remember looking at some of the Texas fans I knew there and though it may not have had anything relevent to the situation I said "One more reason why I hate Notre Dame."
I would rather talk about more pleasant things like that Hamburger joint in Whitehouse where several of us went and got burgers, fries, and onion rings. It was really good and when the waitress came back and asked if we wanted anything else we kind of looked at each other and somebody said "We want another round of everything." She kind of laughed and said ok.
They had sratch off lottery tickes there which was something most of us had never seen at the time. I think that place was called "Stella's."
