Media to investigate Bachman's foster kids

According to ABC
"Stephanopoulos: Finally one—one final question. I think one of the most impressive things that people find in your background is the fact that you and your husband have helped raise 23 foster children and I know you want to shield them but are they prepared and are you prepared for the loss of privacy that comes with the president campaign? And is that something you are concerned about for them?"

Huh, just last week Michelle Obama was thanking the media for leaving her children alone.

Anyone remember the media giving Sarah Palin's children privacy? Even the unborn baby? Me either
and Stephanopoulos asks if Bachman and her foster kids are ' prepared">
Why didn't ol George remind everyone of the treatment given to Obama' kids?

wonder if they will call on all people to sift through dumpsters and old closets to get any dirt on Bachman like they did for Palin's emails

I wonder that the media can't see their own hypocrisy. ALL children of candidates, not just Obama, should be off limits. Period

Well-stated Horn. The kids aren't running for public office. The media in general could use a healthy dose of ethics in this area.

I think the thread title is completely misleading (go figure, it's a 6721 thread), BUT I completely agree that the media should get out of the kids' lives until and unless those kids want to be in the discussion (see McCain's daughter).

However, no matter how well the media behaves, there is still a loss of privacy that comes with running for, and being, POTUS. It's just a fact of life. That's true for Obama's kids as well. GS was asking if she was prepared, and if her kids were prepared for that loss of privacy. He further asked if that was something she was concerned about. Those are fair questions for anyone running for POTUS with such a large family. Similar questions were asked of Obama.

He was not saying "you better be prepared because we're coming for you." I know that fits so much prettier in the narrative, but it's just not true.

1.Do you think the media treated , reported on and wrote about or speculated on the Obama kids the same way they did the Palin kids?

2/ do you really think the media won't contact each foster child of Bachman they can find and report any negative angle they can gin up?

Horn672` -- There was a big difference in the treatment of Obama's kids and Palin's kids. When the high school age daughter got knocked up, it was big news and I'll have to admit I was curious about it and whether Gov. Palin would stay in the presidential race. I admired the family for making sure the baby would have a good home and doing all they could to accept the obviously immature and not overly bright father to be. Once Bristol and Levi Johnson were meeting with McCain and sitting on the front row at the Republican National Convention it was too much to ignore. Bristol has since sought out media attention and profited enormously thereby.

I honestly don't know much about Palin's other children except I know there was the last baby that there was some reckless speculation over. There's that persistent rumor that it was a grandchild rather than Paln's natural child. Seems as ludicrus as the crap about Obama being a Muslim or born in Kenya.

By the way, I hope there is no effort to hold Bachmann accountable for any problems with any of the foster children. I've been a foster parent and the children coming into care have experienced crap that no human should endure. It would be stastically improbable that anyone could care for that number of children taken from abusive situations and have them all turn out as exemplary adults. God Bless Ms. Bachmann and others like her. It take a special kind of love, not to mention courage and backbone, to take on responsibilities for helping children from troubled backgrounds. I may have political differences with Michelle Bachmann, but I have no doubt she's a person who really knows how to care and give.

"Media attention" does not equal "media investigation."

I'm shocked that horn6721 inaccurately entitles his thread based on a quote and then goes into hysterical hypothetical mode to defend the inaccuracy.

You've done your work for the day. Give yourself a pat on the back.

The Bachmanns have committed no crimes. Owning a health care clinic that receives Medicaid/Medicare funds while proudly proclaiming an antipathy toward Medicare is not criminal.

that title is really misleading.

Palin's kids are all over reality TV. They want media attention or their mom want them to get media attention.

In general, if politician's kids keep a low profile and don't put themselves in the spotlight, the media will stay away from them, Limbaugh's jackassery not withstanding.

If any politician ever uses their family in any public manner to gain support/votes- they are 100% fair game in my opinion. This includes mentioning them in interviews or parading them on stage after a speech.

I believe Michele has mentioned them in interviews multiple times.

Of course- that doesn't mean the Press should ever harass a family member, but, they certainly can be looked over in a sense to see who they are.

I think that the pro-O media is going to give Bachman the deluxe "Palin" treatment. That will include digging up dirt on the family.

I heard an interview with MB on CNN yesterday and the female "reporter" asking the questions only wanted to talk about John Wayne's birthplace and some liberal website that claimed MB was inaccurate on 18 of 21 statements that they looked at. MB kept trying to direct the interivew towards issues like unemployment and the deficit to no avail.

If Bachman appears to have any chance at all of winning the nomination, she will get trashed relentlessly by the media. Likewise Herman Cain. The last thing they want is a successful Republican that is not a white male.

ok This is funny
""Media attention" does not equal "media investigation."

HOW wll the media get information on any of Bachman's kids to give them "attention".
How would the media find out anything about these kids?
How would these kids lose privacy ??

In general, if politician's kids keep a low profile and don't put themselves in the spotlight, the media will stay away from them, Limbaugh's jackassery not withstanding.

This is true if you are a democrat. Well, there is a big difference between how the bush daughters and palin's kids were depicted in the media and pop culture (SNL, etc.) vs. obama's/Biden kid's. mccain's daughter decided to be a left wing republican and had political opinions during the campaign so that is a little different.

Joe Biden's kids? oh, they are a mess but you won't hear a peep about them or a skit on SNL about them. I guess its ok to use coke and and screw who you want if you are the daughter or son of someone on the left but if you are the daughter or son of someone on the right, you are a moronic white trash hick. The only kid of palin's who isnt thrust in the spotlight is the kid in the millitary. oh, they didnt leave himn alone. during the campaign, a few publications ran with the story that he was a criminal and was forced to join the millitary by sarah palin but of course this was all untrue.

So, to summarize the last 4 months- if the media scrutinizes a Republican- it is a liberal bias and an attack. If the media scrutinizes a Democrat, like, say, his religion of origin, rumors of a false birthplace, his relationship with his pastor- that is Fox news keeping it fair and balanced.

Got it.

Yes, you're right. Limbaugh is not a comedian. The fact is that he really does speak into a golden microphone and he really is the Dean of the Limbaugh Institute of Advanced Conservative Study. He really, really does have talent on loan from God and he does his show with half of his brain tied behind his back, just to make it fair.

Come on man, lighten up.

Also, the Big Will story above about Limbaugh is just urban legend.

The reference to Rush Limbaugh is partially true. I was watching his short-lived TV show that afternoon and can even remember making a remark about it to my wife. The link below explains the real facts. It's pretty much the way I remember it.

I remember that Rush said something to that intent in regard to Chelsea, and it was clearly out of line. The guy does satire, he pushes the limit for obvious reasons, and yes, he does occasionally say things that he probably shouldn't say.

Having said that, I'm fairly sure he hasn't openly fantasized about an opponent being assassinated, talked about hoping someone dies, etc...
