Mavs remaining schedule

Pretty favorable schedule the rest of the way. No Lakers or Utah. One against Denver and SAS. Realistically see them going 14-4 and getting to 57 wins. I thought they would be lucky to get to 50 wins this season before the trade. Wish the Horns could have made the same sort of turnaround, but not to be.

Belated tip of the hat to the Mavs from this Spurs fan for the Haywood-Butler trade. Excellent move. I'm going to be interested to see you guys in the playoffs. Good luck.

Mavs deserve their standing of 2nd-best in the West. Their team chemistry is at an all-time high since the trade. Not just the addition of the 3 players but the removal of Josh Howard has lifted this team. Kidd is having a spectacular year; we take Dirk for granted and everything he brings; Marion is an unsung grinder on this team; and now the emergence of Roddy Beaubois. If you haven't seen him play, check him out. He's skinny, but has springs in his legs and speed out the wazoo with a very confident shot. What a sparkplug, especially in Jet's absence. Carlisle is making it all happen.

Looking forward to the playoffs. Go Mavs!

Dallas has a weakness and that is Kidd can't stop a penetrating guard from beating him off the dribble. Quick guards like Tony Parker have always been able to eat his lunch. But other then that, they are going to be a very good team. And they finally seem to have a fire back. Still if you look at their margin of victory, it's the lowest of all the better teams. But still they are winning again and that's a positive change. This team just looked lost with Josh Howard on the floor. Guy just quit on them.

Parker is quicker, but so is Beaubois for that matter.
Kidd is a much better PG (assists & A/TO ratio), not to mention rebounder, freethrower, & 3 pt threat (12th in NBA), so I don't think you will find many Mavs fans that consider him any type of liability.

Besides, if Jason Kidd is your weak link, I think you're in pretty damn good shape.

wad - but now the Mavs have Haywood in the middle if there is a break down by Kidd on defense. This is the first time in the history of the Mavs that there has been anything resembling a defensive presence in the middle. It is very unfamiliar to me and I kinda like it.

Wow !!! Mavs only suit up 9 again last night, & JJ goes down with ankle turn. Yet.....
even with no big man (BH & Damp both out), Tim Thomas still out, Jet still out & being weighted down by the liability of J Kidd on the floor, they pulled 6 games ahead of the spurs, & within 2.5 of the lakers by winning their 12th in a row !!!!!!

I don't think anyone does well against the quick, penetrating guards. Even the quick, penetrating guards don't guard each other well. When the NBA quit allowing hand checking 4 (or so) years ago it was huge for those guys and there isn't much you can do to stop it other than to have big guys who can clog the lane and help stop the penetration. Marion was a good addition for that and when Damp was healthy they did pretty well. Haywood obviously was an upgrade and when both Damp and Haywood get healthy there shouldn't be a time when the Mavs don't have a big defender in the game. That should be really significant.

The other good point is that Billups and Fisher aren't quite like Parker/Williams/Paul/Nash so the best teams in the west won't present that problem. Billups/Fisher create their own set of issues but it isn't penetrating at will.

Yea, Billups and Fisher are big, physical guards who actually suit Kidd's strengths as a bigger defender. We could even extend that discussion to Deron Williams of Utah.

Hope Barea is alright. We are running thin right now as it is. Beaubois has been amazing while Jet has gone down. Shocked at how poised he's playing. I think even the coaching staff has to be a little surprised at how quickly he's developed into a quality role player, immediately capable of providing huge minutes this year.

Obviously a lot of thought put into your post Nuclear Bear and I commend you for that. I don't really have the time or inclination to find a bunch of information to discount your stats, etc. All I can say is that each game is different and you cannot compare a PG vs. a PG straight up in statistics and say that is the determining factor of who is better. A lot of times the PG is not guarding the PG. A lot of what Jason Kidd does shows up on the stat sheet, but a lot of it does not (e.g., he makes a pass that leads to another pass that gets a guy an open shot). All I can say is that the guy is a consensus Hall of Famer and a heck of a player. Devin Harris scores all sorts of points and throws up huge numbers for the Nets (and he did it for the Mavs), but the Mavs were not going anywhere with Harris and may actually go somewhere with Kidd. He just makes other guys better. Harris does not make anyone better and a lot of PGs throw up a lot of points, but they don't make anyone better.

And Aaron Brooks ahead of Jason Kidd? Really? Come on.

And to go back to your earlier post responding to my defensive presence point. I will agree with you partially about Diop and Damp in 2006. However, it just seems different with Haywood as he seems like an actual "man" who will get in there and mix it up and throw some elbows and dunk the basketball. I never got that feeling out of Damp or (especially) Diop.

Are we comparing an aging Kidd to other PGs in their prime? I would say to wait and see how this season pans out before you write the book on Jason Kidd.

Kidd has worked on his shot for the last several years. His PG ability, his leadership ability is un-f'ing-canny. You know Bear that winning teams are all about chemistry. Since Nash left the Mavs were HURTING in lack of Field General play. Jason Kidd is one cerebral player, that knobby thing that sticks out of the back of his shaved head not withstanding. He is the glue. He is the straw. He is the

Maybe that's an exageration, since Dirk has to be The Man, but Kidd and he are quite the tandem. Adding in Marion, Butler and Haywood, and that's a pretty powerful team lurking in the NBA Shadows.

I have a very hard time believing that all NBA fans are simply tricked into thinking Jason Kidd is any good. He's very good. I'm a basketball player and when I watch him run the court on a fast break, it excites me. He has tremendous instincts on the court, incredible intensity and a desire to win, and I'm sure great leadership skills as well. You can't fluff statistics night in and night out for 15+ years....at some point numbers don't lie....the man gets assists. And as a mavs fan you absolutely cannot discount how important his rebounding skills are. A guard that can rebound well makes coaches giddy. I was against the trade when it first happened, but I was wrong. He's good, the mavs are good.

One final note: I've had the opportunity to talk to coach k on numerous occasions, privately a couple of times. He told me there would be no gold medal without Kidd....he was the unquestioned leader.

He is also the absolute best at leading his team to victory by running over the opposing coach. And I mean THE best.

Nuclear - we have obviously struck a nerve with you about Jason Kidd. I am just floored by your thoughts about him, and can't really believe what I am reading. But, hey, every person is entitled to their opinions and I will let you have yours.

I will just say I cannot disagree more about the importance of Jason Kidd to a basketball team. It is not just in the stats man. Watch the games. Did you see him against Atlanta a couple weeks back? Just crazy good. And not just for the shots he hit or the technical that he drew on the Hawks coach. He is a leader. He gives the ball to guys where they want to have it. He knows his teammates. He knows the opposing players and what they want to do on defense.

kidd is one of the best point guards of all time. if it didn't take him 15 years to learn how to shoot, he would probably be the best of all time.

i think most players would agree. but you are right in that his lack of scoring has hurt some of the teams he has been on..... so if you have kidd you have to have the parts around him to make it work. looks like he has that right now.

Nuke, I think you have a thing against Kidd. To say he's only good when surrounded by good players somehow doesn't make much sense. Kobe's not either. Shaq's not either. LaBron hasn't won a championship yet. Marino never did. Or The Mailman.

All I can tell you is that I, probably like you, started watching him when he was a Rookie and fell in love with his game back then. Yes, he couldn't shoot. But his ball handling was phenomenal. And as was mentioned above, his rebounding. Watch him go to the boards and snare the ball. Then lead the break. And ALL the players love playing with him. Why? Because he gets them the ball where they want it. And it creates what? CHEMISTRY.

The Mavs were sucking wind before the trade this year. They were also sucking the year they traded for him. Getting a floor general was the best move the Mavs have made since letting Nash run away. The Horns are proof, if you need to look very far, that a great PG is totally necessary if you're going to have a championship team. Kidd's work on his shooting has increased his effectiveness and the quality of his team immensely.
