If ever a player deserved some type of award and recognition it's Mark Payton. I believe he would have been one of the best lead off hitters in the history of college baseball had he played for a team with some solid hitters to put around him.
He gets on base as his 86 game consecutive streak shows. He has a great batting eye and walks a lot. He is constantly pitched around because of weak hitting after him through the years. I think he also presses in many at bats because he rightfully believes that if he doesn't get the job done that it just won't get done. That means he sometimes swings at pitches out of the zone to try and drive in runs.
As a natural lead off hitter he could even increase his already
outstanding output as a hitter. Not as much pitching around him and his on base percentage is the ultimate type for "small ball."
Instead we had to hit him in third or even clean up because he was just about all we had as a hitter who could consistently drive in runs and had some pop in his bat.
He is also a quality outfielder with a accurate plus arm.
It's truly a shame that he came along in this period of Texas baseball because if ever a player deserved more than one trip to Omaha it is Mark Payton. That trip was short lived in two games and gone. He deserved to experience victory and success there like other great Texas players did. It just never happened.
He reminds me of Spike Owen who I got to know well. His passion for the game and his ability to play it is similar in nature. Of course Spike was an outstanding lead off hitter and a great defensive player too at short.
I just wish Mark could have had those same trips to Omaha that Spike had. I know how much those trips meant to Spike and wearing a Longhorn uniform. I remember well the anguish Spike had when he had to take that uniform off for the last time in Omaha his last year.
I think Mark has those same attributes that Spike had and it would be fitting that if even in defeat he could take off his Texas Longhorn uniform for the last time in Omaha.
That seems highly unlikely though and that is really a total injustice. Mark has given a lot to this program over his four years here. He deserves any and all awards he can get while here.
