Man watches

So, Mrs. Deadhorse suggested I look at watches. I haven't worn one in years and hadn't really thought of it. So, off to the jewelry store I went.

First, I saw the Rolex's. Too gaudy and too pricey. Seriously, they want that much? Also, looks like something our father's generation would wear.

Second, I saw something called a "Breitling." Seemed solid. Very aviator centric, though.

Then, I was shown the Tag's. Seemed OK. I've always heard there's a high douche bag quotient regarding these. Is that true?

Any other recommendations for man watches? I know that watches aren't very practical at this point and they're mostly just jewelry but do you have any thoughts?

ShopNBC.com...Invicta watches. Big as hell watches...but they make some normal sized (and nice) stuff too. Breitling's nice too though.

You don't mention a price range, but since you are looking at Breitling, I would also look at Omega and IWC. Check outThe Link there is a wealth of watch knowledge over there.

I love my Fossils. I have three...all of them related to UT in some fashion. I've had one since 2003, and the other two since '06. I've spent a total of twenty buck in repairs. They aren't your top of the line, but they look nice, are durable and keep perfect time.
What else do you need?

I've had a Movado for about 15 years. It's good-looking--elegant, really--and keeps perfect time.

I like my Baume & Mercier, it isn't as fancy as a Rolex and isn't as douchy as a Tag

I was blown away by some of the Tissots.

Check these out.The Link

Touch face, altimeter, thermometer, barometer, compass. Way cool and functional. Cost about 800 bucks.

I no longer wear a watch since I carry a cell phone. But I have had many over the years since I generally break them quickly. I still have 2 which I liked a lot an Omega but the clasp is broken and a Luminox. They are both stainless diver watches and for the money the Luminox was a better buy.

I've had two fossils in the last 10 or so years... my current one is a UT-themed watch that I got from the Sue Patrick store on Burnet Rd. Looks good and keeps perfect time.

about 25 years ago, I got a cigarette lighter-watch from the cigarette girl at the Sands Casino.

Big bulky digital thing. When you pushed a button on the side, a flame shot out the top. Way cool.

I've worn Timex and Fossil throughout the years, but the Seiko I currently have has been my favorite so far. It's nice looking but understated, sturdier than my old Timex's, and not ridiculously expensive (bought it for about $100 on Amazon a couple years ago).

I've had a great Movado for 12 years now and a Seiko Arctura for about 2 years now and both have been really good watches.
These are only for looks. No yard work, exercise etc. with these on.

Fossils suck IMO. I had about 2-3 of these and they fell apart all the friggin time.
Invest in a good one and take care of it and it will last a long time.

Citizen and Seiko are solid mid-range ($300 - $500) choices. Fossil is good for the ~$100 range.

I haven't heard about d-bags' affection for Tag Heuers. I do know Jason Bourne wears a Tag Heuer.

i haven't worn a watch since i was in middle school. i broke them a lot and stuff.

they're good for business. why, i don't know. i would never look down at it because i have a cell phone. so i'm not sure why i would buy one.

I'm a Tissot fan. Quality movement and a sapphire crystal for a very reasonable price. They are the mid-line offering from the Omega-Tissot-Swatch company.

Omega, IWC and Ulysse Nardin are the two that I wear most regularly. They are all quality watches with what i would consider a relatively low DB factor my wearing of them notwithstanding.

This one's been pretty good to me, probably about 4 years? I like the Chrono and the underwater, and the stainless has really grown on me over time. I think I paid maybe $150 on Ebay. It's pretty simple and isn't a status symbol to be sure, but it's nice enough.

if you jsut want something to keep time just use your cell phone, whatever you do do get a Tag or a Breitling wit a swiss movement.

If it has a battery there's not much different between a swatch and what you bought.

I have an Omega Speedmaster which is a very reasonable, durable and good looking watch.

I have a Patedek phillippe which I wouldnt have bought if it wasnt a gift but love

I bought an iron man-- Timex in 93-- I should have done a commercial

I and the watch survived 42 parachute jumps, 1 concussion, hitting a tree at night and fracturing 2 vertabrae, 2 water jumps into the Atlantic. The band broke on a jump and I chased it down 900 feet and landed next to it-- still working. 3 bands later and 2 batteries later--I retired it in 2005-- it sits on a shelf in my closet. I have another newer Iron man--all metal--doing fine so far--survived kayaking in the Gulf in 8 ft waves last weekend.

I have gotten my money's worth out of these watches many times over

People who don't wear a watch because they have a cell phone must also wear pajamas to business meetings instead of a business suit. No difference.
