looking at colt on saturday i couldn't help but think how much major has already rubbed off on him. colt was so in control and poised. he made all of the right decisions. except for the 103 rushing yards, it was major-esque from my point of view.
it's like major came in and saw this raw talent and then the two of them jumped rope in major's old neighborhood, went running on the beach and churned out this refined, polished quarterback.
did anyone else detect a 'major' component to colt's game?.

I would agree with you there, sir. Although Colt has said from the beginning that he is a fan of Major's and looked up to him. So it comes as no surprise that Major would be a big influence on Colt. I saw some of the pics from the FAU game and one in particular that caught my eye was of Major giving Colt his congratulations. Given time, Colt could become one of the most record setting QB's at Texas. I have always said Colt has Major's football smarts, with legs like Vince. Last Saturday night proved it to be true.

Hook'em.

...he doesnt have legs like vy...but they are good enough...the checkdowns to irby were the big difference....and the pass to shipley on the crossing pattern showcased his arm strength that should allay the nayesayers concern...major and colt seemed to have a special relationship...

All I have to say is that it felt OH SO GOOD to see Major back on our sideline again. He is still my favorite Longhorn player of all time. Yeah, there have been better athletes than Major, but he brought a high level on contol and overall intelligence to the QB position at UT. It also marked the beggining of an era for UT football, and Major was a surprise as a RS Freshman that took the helm early in 1998.

I am glad Colt can benefit from Major in an way possible, and I think this year is going to be a special one for Colt.

Let's not forget where all of them get their guidance from. While Major is a Greg Davis clone and proudly so, this also fits the natural curve of a qb under GD. Vince's best (and final, sigh) year was his Jr. year. No doubt that having Major, a qb with a similar skill set as Colt is a tremendous impact.

I think Colt throws better than Major at this point and let's not discuss speed on the run. Colt has put in so much work to get better by identifying his weaknesses or areas of need and gotten after it. Very impressive.

We are so lucky to have Major back. I have a feeling that Colt is not the only guy getting benefit from his wisdm, experience and lessons to be taught.

...burntorangeirish ...you are right major came on the scene as an unheralded quaterback...thrust into action against ucla and kansas st as a freshman....and colt similarly thrust into action agaist ohio st as a freshman as an afterthought when in the recruiting wars we were stiffed by the infamous perilous perloux....

I thought he looked about the same. I thought the difference is that he actually had time to check down and go thru his progressions.

I would guess Major could be a great source of moral support. I just don't see him doing more then what he was hired to, which would seem to be a full time gig.

I guess when I see him feed the entire team the pre game meal with a single loaf of bread, and he parts the Colorado river to lead the South Austinites to the promise land I will give him credit for others hard work.

Thinking ahead... with Colt a senior next year, a solid running game and this defense with a year under its belt it's going to be a really, really fun year in 2009. We should start in the top 5! It is great to see the bond between Colt and major growing. How long have we been waiting to see this and it's all come to fruition now!

I remember the first time I saw Colt McCoy play. He was not poised. He was quite shaken up by the blitz in particular and the D-line seemed to just pour in through his O line. In fact, the first time I saw Colt play he had to be removed from the game. He was hit on a pass play and got up, but fell back to the ground.

I guess I should mention the first time I saw Colt play was when he was a junior at Jim Ned High school against the mighty Dragons of Bangs, TX. I moved from Bangs before Colt signed with Texas, but I remember thinking the guy would never see a down at Texas. Boy was I wrong, and I will be the first to say how wrong I was. Of course Colt has grown into a MAN from then until now. He was probably 6' 1" 170 lbs. when I first saw him play.

I'm not the world's biggest Colt McCoy fan, but it's pretty disrespectful to him to try to give Major the credit for his success. The kid has shown poise and ability for two years now.

He had a hell of a game on Saturday and he deserves the credit.

it is nice to see Major giving Colt advice, direction, tips or whatever they are talking about. It's good to see that he's not pigeonholing himself to the running backs but giving extra help to the QB's as well.

It doesn't hurt that he has an O line that protected very well on Sat. That makes it much easier to be poised. Having said that, I thought he played a great game and, no doubt, having Major on the sideline can only help since GD is in the booth.

I hate to line up with the backbenchers, but all I saw was Colt with more time to throw. I do love Major, so I would like to go with you, but....

Major Applewhite=Class Act

Colt McCoy is learning from the best even thought Major is listed as RB's coach....

How could anyone have liked Sims over Major...other than Mack at the time.

Did you ever meet or talk to either one of Sims or Major?

Preferring one as a qb is one thing, but liking one more? (maybe you mean liked one more as a qb)

I have met a talked with both away from campus, they were both great young men, very courteous and respectful.

I never understood the personal attacks on Chris, when all he did was commit to this school when he could have literally gone anywhere in the country, work hard, do what the coaches asked, and represent this school admirably. Did he make all the right plays? No, but not many do.

What does the Running Backs coach have to do with the QB?

The closest connection I can draw is helping the RBs to pass protect better, which I recall reading that Major was working on.

Just because he played QB doesn't mean he's as involved with Colt's progression this offseason as you'd like to beleive.

Sorry, but this is a really stupid thread. Colt was setting National Records as a Freshman without the help of Major. The difference between that year and last year was a decent O-Line.

This thread just strikes me as wishful thinking by the Major Cultists. Have to give Major credit for something... anything. He is the RB coach for goodness sake. I doubt he has coached Colt at all. He has his hands full with our inexperienced RB stable.
