I thought Locke's "girlfriend" was actually his ex-fiance. That was why the line at the end of that episode was so devastating when they revealed the background behind the woman later.

Depends on which girlfriend you're talking about - I'm hearkening all the way back to Season 1 when he was working in the box factory or whatever and used to talk about the call-girl as his girlfriend. He did have an actual legitimate girlfriend before he was crippled (Katie Segal). Is that the one you're thinking about?

The pre-crash John Lock seemed very much to be a guy in denial, who was very capable of distorting reality to avoid some of the more bitter truths he had to face.
